katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE Passage Old Testament in Greek (Septuagint)

1Whereas many great teachings have been given to us through the law and the prophetsECCLESIASTICUS. THE WISDOM OF JOSHUA, SON OF SIRACH. Forward.
and the others that followed them, καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν κατ' αὐτοὺς ἠκολουθηκότων δεδο μένων,
on account of which we should praise Israel for instruction and wisdom;
and since it is necessary not only that the readers themselves should acquire understanding καὶ ὡς οὐ μόνον αὐτοὺς τοὺς ἀναγινώσκοντας δέον ἐστὶν ἐπιστήμονας γίνεσθαι,
but also that those who love learning should be able to help the outsiders
by both speaking and writing, καὶ λέγοντας καὶ γράφοντας,
my grandfather Jesus, after devoting himself ὁ πάππος μου Ἰησοῦς ἐπὶ πλεῖον ἑαυτὸν δοὺς
especially to the reading of the law εἴς τε τὴν τοῦ νόμου
and the prophets καὶ τῶν προφητῶν
and the other books of our fathers, καὶ τῶν ἄλλων πατρίων βιβλίων ἀνάγνωσιν
and after acquiring considerable proficiency in them, καὶ ἐν τούτοις ἱκανὴν ἕξιν περιποιησάμενος
was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom,
in order that, by becoming conversant with this also, ὅπως οἱ φιλομαθεῖς καὶ τούτων ἔνοχοι γενόμενοι
those who love learning should make even greater progress in living according to the law.
You are urged therefore Παρακέκλησθε οὖν
to read with good will and attention, μετ' εὐνοίας καὶ προσοχῆς
and to be indulgent in cases where, τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν ποιεῖσθαι
despite our diligent labour καὶ συγγνώμην ἔχειν
in translating, ἐφ' οἷς ἂν δοκῶμεν
we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly.
For what was originally οὐ γὰρ ἰσοδυναμεῖ
expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language.
Not only this work, οὐ μόνον δὲ ταῦτα,
but even the law itself, the prophecies,
and the rest of the books καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν βιβλίων
differ not a little as originally expressed.
When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes Ἑν γὰρ τῷ ὀγδόῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει ἐπὶ τοῦ Εὐεργέτου βασιλέως
and stayed for some time, παραγενηθεὶς εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ συγχρονίσας
I found opportunity for no little instruction.
It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some pains and labour to the translation of the following book,
using in that period of time πολλὴν ἀγρυπνίαν καὶ ἐπιστήμην προσενεγκάμενος
great watchfulness and skill ἐν τῷ διαστήματι τοῦ χρόνου
in order to complete and publish the book
for those living abroad who wished to gain learning, καὶ τοῖς ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ βουλομένοις φιλομαθεῖν
being prepared in character προκατασκευαζομένους τὰ ἤθη
to live according to the law.

Notes: This page displays passages from the katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE.
The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have used the name 'Yahweh'.
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

The katapi New Study Bible reference section displays links to parallel passages, and to direct quotations by New Testament authors to Old Testament passages. Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
