| 9 1 | "O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy, who have made all things by your word, | Solomon prays for Wisdom. Wis.9.1-18 | Θεὲ πατέρων καὶ Κύριε τοῦ ἐλέους ὁ ποιήσας τὰ πάντα ἐν λόγῳ σου |
| 2 | and by your wisdom have formed man, to have dominion over the creatures you have made, | καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ σου κατασκευάσας ἄνθρωπον, ἵνα δεσπόζῃ τῶν ὑπὸ σοῦ γενομένων κτισμάτων | |
| 3 | and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul, | καὶ διέπῃ τὸν κόσμον ἐν ὁσιότητι καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ, καὶ ἐν εὐθύτητι ψυχῆς κρίσιν κρίνῃ, | |
| 4 | give me the wisdom that sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your servants. | δός μοι τὴν τῶν σῶν θρόνων πάρεδρον σοφίαν, καὶ μή με ἀποδοκιμάσῃς ἐκ παίδων σου. | |
| 5 | For I am your slave and the son of your maidservant, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgment and laws; | ὅτι ἐγὼ δοῦλος σὸς καὶ υἱὸς τῆς παιδίσκης σου, ἄνθρωπος ἀσθενὴς καὶ ὀλιγοχρόνιος καὶ ἐλάσσων ἐν συνέσει κρίσεως καὶ νόμων· | |
| 6 | for even if one is perfect among the sons of men, yet without the wisdom that comes from you he will be regarded as nothing. | κἂν γάρ τις ᾖ τέλειος ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων, τῆς ἀπὸ σοῦ σοφίας ἀπούσης εἰς οὐδὲν λογισθήσεται. | |
| 7 | You have chosen me to be king of your people and to be judge over your sons and daughters. | σύ με προείλω βασιλέα λαοῦ σου καὶ δικαστὴν υἱῶν σου καὶ θυγατέρων· | |
| 8 | You have given command to build a temple on your holy mountain, and an altar in the city of your habitation, a copy of the holy tent which you prepared from the beginning. | εἶπας οἰκοδομῆσαι ναὸν ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ σου, καὶ ἐν πόλει κατασκηνώσεώς σου θυσιαστήριον, μίμημα σκηνῆς ἁγίας, ἣν προητοίμασας ἀπ' ἀρχῆς. | |
| 9 | With you is wisdom, who knows your works and was present when you made the world, and who understand what is pleasing in your sight and what is right according to your commandments. | καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἡ σοφία ἡ εἰδυῖα τὰ ἔργα σου, καὶ παροῦσα, ὅτε ἐποίεις τὸν κόσμον, καὶ ἐπισταμένη τί ἀρεστὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου καὶ τί εὐθὲς ἐν ἐντολαῖς σου. | |
| 10 | Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of your glory send her, that she may be with me and toil, and that I may learn what is pleasing to you. | ἐξαπόστειλον αὐτὴν ἐξ ἁγίων οὐρανῶν, καὶ ἀπὸ θρόνου δόξης σου πέμψον αὐτήν, ἵνα συμπαροῦσά μοι κοπιάσῃ, καὶ γνῶ τί εὐάρεστόν ἐστιν παρὰ σοί. | |
| 11 | For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory. | οἶδε γὰρ ἐκείνη πάντα καὶ συνίει, καὶ ὁδηγήσει με ἐν ταῖς πράξεσί μου σωφρόνως, καὶ φυλάξει με ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτῆς· | |
| 12 | Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge your people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father. | καὶ ἔσται προσδεκτὰ τὰ ἔργα μου, καὶ διακρινῶ τὸν λαόν σου δικαίως, καὶ ἔσομαι ἄξιος θρόνων πατρός μου. | |
| 13 | For what man can learn the counsel of God? Or who can discern what the Lord wills? | τίς γὰρ ἄνθρωπος γνώσεται βουλὴν θεοῦ; ἢ τίς ἐνθυμηθήσεται τί θέλει ὁ κύριος; | |
| 14 | For the reasoning of mortals is worthless, and our designs are likely to fail, | λογισμοὶ γὰρ θνητῶν δειλοί, καὶ ἐπισφαλεῖς αἱ ἐπίνοιαι ἡμῶν· | |
| 15 | for a perishable body weighs down the soul, and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind. | φθαρτὸν γὰρ σῶμα βαρύνει ψυχήν, καὶ βρίθει τὸ γεῶδες σκῆνος νοῦν πολυφρόντιδα. | |
| 16 | We can hardly guess at what is on earth, and what is at hand we find with labour; but who has traced out what is in the heavens? | καὶ μόλις εἰκάζομεν τὰ ἐπὶ γῆς, καὶ τὰ ἐν χερσὶν εὑρίσκομεν μετὰ πόνου· τὰ δὲ ἐν οὐρανοῖς τίς ἐξιχνίασεν; | |
| 17 | Who has learned your counsel, unless you have given wisdom and sent your holy Spirit from on high? | βουλὴν δέ σου τίς ἔγνω, εἰ μὴ σὺ ἔδωκας σοφίαν καὶ ἔπεμψας τὸ ἅγιόν σου πνεῦμα ἀπὸ ὑψίστων; | |
| 18 | And thus the paths of those on earth were set right, and men were taught what pleases you, and were saved by wisdom." | καὶ οὕτως διωρθώθησαν αἱ τρίβοι τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς, καὶ τὰ ἀρεστά σου ἐδιδάχθησαν ἄνθρωποι, καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐσώθησαν. | |
