New English Bible Mark:1 >>Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)

1 HERE BEGINS THE GOSPEL of Jesus Christ the Son of God. [Some witnesses omit: the Son of God]

The Preaching of John the Baptist   Mk.1.1-8 (Judaea ) - written 45-60ce.
2 In the prophet Isaiah it stands written: 'Here is my herald whom I send on ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. - Behold, I send my messenger Mk.1.2 | Mal.3.1Kαθὼς γέγραπται ἐν τῷ Ἠσαΐᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ,

σου·

3 A voice crying aloud in the wilderness, "Prepare a way for the Lord; clear a straight path for him."' - the voice of one crying in the wilderness   Mk.1.3 ( ) - | Is.40.1φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ,
4 And so it was that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness proclaiming a baptism in token of repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
5 and they flocked to him from the whole Judaean country-side and the city of Jerusalem, and were baptized by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins.
6 John was dressed in a rough coat of camel's hair, with a leather belt round his waist, and he fed on locusts and wild honey.
7 His proclamation ran: 'After me comes one who is mightier than I. I am not fit to unfasten his shoes.
8 I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.'
9 It happened at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. The Baptism of Jesus Mk.1.9-11 | Mt.3.13-17 | Lk.3.21-22Kαὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου.
10 At the moment when he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
11 And a voice spoke from heaven: 'Thou art my Son, my Beloved; [Or: Thou art my only Son.] on thee my favour rests.'
12 Thereupon the Spirit sent him away into the wilderness, The Temptation of Jesus Mk.1.12-13 (Wilderness of Judaea) - | Mt.4.1-11 | Lk.4.1-13Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ Πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἐρημον.
13 and there he remained for forty days tempted by Satan. He was among the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
14 AFTER JOHN HAD BEEN ARRESTED, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: The Calling of Four Fishermen Mk.1.14-20 (Capernaum) - | Mt.4.18-22 | Lk.4.14-15 | Lk.5.1-11Μετὰ δὲ τὸ παραδοθῆναι τὸν Ἰωάννην ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ
15 'The time has come; the kingdom of God is upon you; repent, and believe the Gospel.'
16 Jesus was walking by the shore of the Sea of Galilee when he saw Simon and his brother Andrew on the lake at work with a casting-net; for they were fishermen.
17 Jesus said to them, 'Come with me, and I will make you fishers of men.'
18 And at once they left their nets and followed him.
19 When he had gone a little further he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in the boat overhauling their nets.
20 He called them; and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, they went off to follow him.
21 They came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath he went to synagogue and began to teach. The Man with an Unclean Spirit Mk.1.21-28 (Capernaum) - | Lk.4.31-37Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναούμ.
22 The people were astounded at his teaching, for, unlike the doctors of the law, he taught with a note of authority.
23 Now there was a man in the synagogue possessed by an unclean spirit.
24 He shrieked: 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you [Or: You have.] come to destroy us? I know who you are-the Holy One of God.'
25 Jesus rebuked him: 'Be silent', he said, 'and come out of him.'
26 And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry left him.
27 They were all dumbfounded and began to ask one another, 'What is this? A new kind of teaching! He speaks with authority. When he gives orders, even the unclean spirits submit.'
28 The news spread rapidly, and he was soon spoken of all over the district of Galilee.
29 On leaving the synagogue they went straight to the house of Simon and Andrew; and James and John went with them. Jesus heals many people Mk.1.29-34 (Capernaum) - | Mt.8.14-17 | Lk.4.38-41Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθόντες ἦλθον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου.
30 Simon's mother-in-law was ill in bed with fever.
31 They told him about her at once. He came forward, took her by the hand, and helped her to her feet. The fever left her and she waited upon them.
32 That evening after sunset they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by devils;
33 and the whole town was there, gathered at the door.
34 He healed many who suffered from various diseases, and drove out many devils. He would not let the devils speak, because they knew who he was.
35 Very early next morning he got up and went out. He went away to a lonely spot and remained there in prayer.
36 But Simon and his companions searched him out,  καὶ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν Σίμων καὶ οἱ μετ' αὐτοῦ,
37 found him, and said, 'They are all looking for you.'
38 He answered, 'Let us move on to the country towns in the neighbourhood; I have to proclaim my message there also; that is what I came out to do.'
39 So all through Galilee he went, preaching in the synagogues and casting out the devils.
40 Once he was approached by a leper, who knelt before him begging his help. 'If only you will,' said the man, 'you can cleanse me.' The Cleansing of a Leper Mk.1.40-45 (Galilee) - | Mt.8.1-4 | Lk.5.12-16Καὶ ἐρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρὸς παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν [καὶ γονυπετῶν] καὶ λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐὰν θέλῃς δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι.
41 In warm indignation Jesus stretched out his hand, [Some witnesses read: Jesus was sorry for him and stretched out his hand; one witness has simply: He stretched out his hand.] touched him, and said, 'Indeed I will; be clean again.'
42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was clean.
43 Then he dismissed him with this stern warning:  καὶ ἐμβριμησάμενος αὐτῷ εὐθὺς ἐξέβαλεν αὐτόν,
44 'Be sure you say nothing to anybody. Go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering laid down by Moses for your cleansing; that will certify the cure.'
45 But the man went out and made the whole story public; he spread it far and wide, until Jesus could no longer show himself in any town, but stayed outside in the open country. Even so, people kept coming to him from all quarters.
