 New English Bible << Matthew:26 >>Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)

1 WHEN JESUS HAD FINISHED this discourse he said to his disciples, The Plot to Kill Jesus Mt.26.1-5 (Jerusalem) - | Mk.14.1-2 | Lk.22.1-2 | Jn.11.45-53Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους, εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ,
2 'You know that in two days' time it will be Passover, and the Son of Man is to be handed over for crucifixion.'
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the nation met in the palace of the High Priest, Caiaphas;
4 and there they conferred together on a scheme to have Jesus arrested by some trick and put to death.
5 'It must not be during the festival,' they said, 'or there may be rioting among the people.'

6 JESUS WAS AT BETHANY in the house of Simon the leper, The Anointing at Bethany   Mt.26.6-13 ( Bethany ) - | Mk.14.3-9 | Lk.12.1-8Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γενομένου ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ,
7 when a woman came to him with a small bottle of fragrant oil, very costly; and as he sat at table she began to pour it over his head.
8 The disciples were indignant when they saw it. 'Why this waste?' they said;  ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠγανάκτησαν λέγοντες, Εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὑτὴ;
9 'it could have been sold for a good sum and the money given to the poor.'
10 Jesus was aware of this, and said to them, 'Why must you make trouble for the woman? It is a fine thing she has done for me.
11 You have the poor among you always; but you will not always have me.
12 When she poured this oil on my body it was her way of preparing me for burial.
13 I tell you this: wherever in all the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be told as her memorial.'
14 THEN ONE OF THE TWELVE, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests Judas' Agreement to Betray Jesus Mt.26.14-16 (Jerusalem) - | Mk.14.10-11 | Lk.22.3-6Τότε πορευθεὶς εἷς τῶν δώδεκα, ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης, πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς
15 and said, 'What will you give me to betray him to you?' They weighed him out [Or: agreed to pay him ...] thirty silver pieces. - they paid him thirty pieces of silver.
16 From that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to ask Jesus, 'Where would you like us to prepare for your Passover supper?' The Passover with the Disciples Mt.26.17-25 (Jerusalem) - | Mk.14.12-21 | Lk.22.7-14 | Lk.22.21-23 | Jn.13.21-30Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες, Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχὰ;
18 He answered, 'Go to a certain man in the city, and tell him, "The Master says, 'My appointed time is near; I am to keep Passover with my disciples at your house.'
19 The disciples did as Jesus directed them and prepared for Passover.
20 In the evening he sat down with the twelve disciples;
21 and during supper he said, 'I tell you this: one of you will betray me.'
22 In great distress they exclaimed one after the other, 'Can you mean me. Lord?'  καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἠρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς ἑκαστος, Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, κύριὲ;
23 He answered, 'One who has dipped his hand into this bowl with me will betray me.
24 The Son of Man is going the way appointed for him in the scriptures; but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had never been born.'
25 Then Judas spoke, the one who was to betray him. 'Rabbi,' he said, 'can you mean me?' Jesus replied, 'The words are yours.' [Or: It is as you say.]
26 During supper Jesus took bread, and having said the blessing he broke it and gave it to the disciples with the words: 'Take this and eat; this is my body.' The Institution of the Lord's Supper Mt.26.26-30 (Jerusalem) - | Mk.14.22-25 | Lk.22.14-23 | 1Cor.11.23-26Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἐκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν, Λάβετε φάγετε, τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου.
27 Then he took a cup, and having offered thanks to God he gave it to them with the words: 'Drink from it, all of you.
28 For this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29 I tell you, never again shall I drink from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.'
30 After singing the Passover Hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus said to them, Tonight you will all fall from your faith on my account; for it stands written: "I will strike the shepherd down and the sheep of his flock will be scattered."

32 But after I am raised again, I will go on before you into Galilee.'
33 Peter replied, 'Everyone else may fall away on your account, but I never will.'
34 Jesus said to him, 'I tell you, tonight before the cock crows you will disown me three times.'
35 Peter said, 'Even if I must die with you, I will never disown you.' And all the disciples said the same.
36 JESUS THEN CAME with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, 'Sit here while I go over there to pray.' The Prayer in Gethsemane Mt.26.36-46 (Gethsemane) - | Mk.14.32-42 | Lk.22.39-46Τότε ἐρχεται μετ' αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανί, καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς, Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἑως [οὗ] ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι.
37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Anguish and dismay came over him,  καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἠρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν.
38 and he said to them, 'My heart is ready to break with grief. Stop here, and stay awake with me.'
39 He went on a little, fell on his face in prayer, and said, 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Yet not as I will, but as thou wilt.'
40 He came to the disciples and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, 'What! Could none of you stay awake with me one hour?  καὶ ἐρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ, οὑτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὡραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ' ἐμοῦ;
41 Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'
42 He went away a second time, and prayed: 'My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to pass me by without my drinking it, thy will be done.'
43 He came again and found them asleep, for their eyes were heavy.
44 So he left them and went away again; and he prayed the third time, using the same words as before.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, 'Still sleeping? Still taking your ease? The hour has come! The Son of Man is betrayed to sinful men.
46 Up, let us go forward; the traitor is upon us.'
47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared; with him was a great crowd armed with swords and cudgels, sent by the chief priests and the elders of the nation. The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus   Mt.26.47-56 ( Gethsemane ) - | Mk.14.43-50 | Lk.22.47-53 | Jn.18.3-12Καὶ ἐτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἦλθεν καὶ μετ' αὐτοῦ ὀχλος πολὺς μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων ἀπὸ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ πρεσβυτέρων τοῦ λαοῦ.
48 The traitor gave them this sign: 'The one I kiss is your man; seize him';  ὁ δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἐδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων, Ὅν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν· κρατήσατε αὐτόν.
49 and stepping forward at once, he said, 'Hail, Rabbi!', and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, 'Friend, do what you are here to do.' [Or: Friend, what are you here for?] They then came forward, seized Jesus, and held him fast.
51 At that moment one of those with Jesus reached for his sword and drew it, and he struck at the High Priest's servant and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, 'Put up your sword. All who take the sword die by the sword.
53 Do you suppose that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would at once send to my aid more than twelve legions of angels?  ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ δύναμαι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι ἀρτι πλείω δώδεκα λεγιῶνας ἀγγέλων;
54 But how then could the scriptures be fulfilled, which say that this must be?'
 πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὑτως δεῖ γενέσθαὶ;
55 At the same time Jesus spoke to the crowd. 'Do you take me for a bandit,' he said, 'that you have come out with swords and cudgels to arrest me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hands on me.
56 But this has all happened to fulfil what the prophets wrote.'

Then the disciples all deserted him and ran away.

57 JESUS WAS LED OFF under arrest to the house of Caiaphas the High Priest, where the lawyers and elders were assembled. Jesus before the Council Mt.26.57-68 (Jerusalem) - | Mk.14.53-65 | Lk.22.54-55 | Jn.18.13-14 | Jn.18.19-24Οἱ δὲ κρατήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήγαγον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα, ὁπου οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι συνήχθησαν.
58 Peter followed him at a distance till he came to the High Priest's courtyard, and going in he sat down there among the attendants, meaning to see the end of it all.
59 The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some allegation against Jesus on which a death-sentence could be based;  οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τὸ συνέδριον ὁλον ἐζήτουν ψευδομαρτυρίαν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ὁπως αὐτὸν θανατώσωσιν,
60 but they failed to find one, though many came forward with false evidence. Finally two men  καὶ οὐχ εὗρον πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων.
61 alleged that he had said, 'I can pull down the temple of God, and rebuild it in three days.'
62 At this the High Priest rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer the the charge that these witnesses bring against you?'  καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;
63 But Jesus kept silence. The High Priest then said, 'By the living God I charge you to tell us: Are you the Messiah, the Son of God?'
64 Jesus replied, "The words are yours. [Or: It is as you say.] But I tell you this: from now on, you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of God [Literally: of the Power.] and coming on the clouds of heaven.' - hereafter you will see the Son of man Mt.26.64 | Ps.110.1 | Dn.7.13λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Σὺ εἶπας· πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν,

65 At these words the High Priest tore his robes and exclaimed, 'Blasphemy! Need we call further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy.
66 What is your opinion?' 'He is guilty,' they answered; 'he should die.'
67 Then they spat in his face and beat him with their fists;
68 and others said, as they struck him, 'Now, Messiah, if you are a prophet, tell us who hit you.'
 λέγοντες, Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, Χριστέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σὲ;
69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when a serving-maid accosted him and said, "You were there too with Jesus the Galilean.'
70 Peter denied it in face of them all. 'I do not know what you mean', he said.
71 He then went out to the gateway, where another girl, seeing him, said to the people there, 'This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.'
72 Once again he denied it, saying with an oath, 'I do not know the man.'
73 Shortly afterwards the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'Surely you are another of them; your accent gives you away!'
74 At this he broke into curses and declared with an oath: 'I do not know the man.' At that moment the cock crew.
75 And Peter remembered how Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you will disown me three times.' He went outside, and wept bitterly.
