Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. | The Earthly and the Heavenly Sanctuaries Hb.9.1-22 | Εἶχε μὲν οὖν ἡ πρώτη δικαιώματα λατρείας τό τε ἀγιον κοσμικόν. |

For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. | | σκηνὴ γὰρ κατεσκευάσθη ἡ πρώτη ἐν ᾗ ἡ τε λυχνία καὶ ἡ τράπεζα καὶ ἡ πρόθεσις τῶν ἀρτων, ἡτις λέγεται Ἅγια· |

Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, | | μετὰ δὲ τὸ δεύτερον καταπέτασμα σκηνὴ ἡ λεγομένη Ἅγια Ἅγίων, |

having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; | | χρυσοῦν ἐχουσα θυμιατήριον καὶ τὴν κιβωτὸν τῆς διαθήκης περικεκαλυμμένην πάντοθεν χρυσίῳ, ἐν ᾗ στάμνος χρυσῆ ἐχουσα τὸ μάννα καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος Ἀαρὼν ἡ βλαστήσασα καὶ αἱ πλάκε ς τῆς διαθήκης, |

above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. | | ὑπεράνω δὲ αὐτῆς Χερουβὶν δόξης κατασκιάζοντα τὸ ἱλαστήριον· περὶ ὧν οὐκ ἐστιν νῦν λέγειν κατὰ μέρος. |

These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; | | Τούτων δὲ οὑτως κατεσκευασμένων, εἰς μὲν τὴν πρώτην σκηνὴν διὰ παντὸς εἰσίασιν οἱ ἱερεῖς τὰς λατρείας ἐπιτελοῦντες, |

but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people. | | εἰς δὲ τὴν δευτέραν ἀπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ μόνος ὁ ἀρχιερεύς, οὐ χωρὶς αἱματος, ὃ προσφέρει ὑπὲρ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τῶν τοῦ λαοῦ ἀγνοημάτων, |

By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary is not yet opened as long as the outer tent is still standing | | τοῦτο δηλοῦντος τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ ἀγίου, μήπω πεφανερῶσθαι τὴν τῶν ἀγίων ὁδὸν ἐτι τῆς πρώτης σκηνῆς ἐχούσης στάσιν, |

(which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, | | ἡτις παραβολὴ εἰς τὸν καιρὸν τὸν ἐνεστηκότα, καθ' ἣν δῶρά τε καὶ θυσίαι προσφέρονται μὴ δυνάμεναι κατὰ συνείδησιν τελειῶσαι τὸν λατρεύοντα, |

but deal only with food and drink and various ablutions, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. | | μόνον ἐπὶ βρώμασιν καὶ πόμασιν καὶ διαφόροις βαπτισμοῖς, δικαιώματα σαρκὸς μέχρι καιροῦ διορθώσεως ἐπικείμενα. |

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) | | Χριστὸς δὲ παραγενόμενος ἀρχιερεὺς τῶν γενομένων ἀγαθῶν διὰ τῆς μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆς οὐ χειροποιήτου, τοῦτ' ἐστιν οὐ ταύτης τῆς κτίσεως, |

he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. | | οὐδὲ δῖ αἱματος τράγων καὶ μόσχων διὰ δὲ τοῦ ἰδίου αἱματος, εἰσῆλθεν ἐφάπαξ εἰς τὰ ἀγια, αἰωνίαν λύτρωσιν εὑράμενος. |
13 |
For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, | | εἰ γὰρ τὸ αἷμα τράγων καὶ ταύρων καὶ σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσα τοὺς κεκοινωμένους ἀγιάζει πρὸς τὴν τῆς σαρκὸς καθαρότητα, |

how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. | | πόσῳ μᾶλλον τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὃς διὰ πνεύματος αἰωνίου ἑαυτὸν προσήνεγκεν ἀμωμον τῷ θεῷ, καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησιν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἐργων εἰς τὸ λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντι. |
15 |
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred which redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant. | | Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο διαθήκης καινῆς μεσίτης ἐστίν, ὁπως θανάτου γενομένου εἰς ἀπολύτρωσιν τῶν ἐπὶ τῇ πρώτῃ διαθήκῃ παραβάσεων τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν λάβωσιν οἱ κεκλημένοι τῆς αἰωνίου κληρονομίας. |

For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. | | ὁπου γὰρ διαθήκη, θάνατον ἀνάγκη φέρεσθαι τοῦ διαθεμένου· |
17 |
For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. | | διαθήκη γὰρ ἐπὶ νεκροῖς βεβαία, ἐπεὶ μήποτε ἰσχύει ὅτε ζῇ ὁ διαθέμενος. |
18 |
Hence even the first covenant was not ratified without blood. | | ὁθεν οὐδὲ ἡ πρώτη χωρὶς αἱματος ἐγκεκαίνισται· |
19 |
For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, | | λαληθείσης γὰρ πάσης ἐντολῆς κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑπὸ Μωϋσέως παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, λαβὼν τὸ αἷμα τῶν μόσχων μετὰ ὑδατος καὶ ἐρίου κοκκίνου καὶ ὑσσώπου αὐτό τε τὸ βιβλίον καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν ἐράντισεν, |

saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you." | - This is the blood of the covenant Hb.9.20 | Ex.24.8 | λέγων, Tοῦτο τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης ἧς ἐνετείλατο πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὁ θεός· |

And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. | | καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν δὲ καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίας τῷ αἱματι ὁμοίως ἐρράντισεν. |
22 |
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. | | καὶ σχεδὸν ἐν αἱματι πάντα καθαρίζεται κατὰ τὸν νόμον, καὶ χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσις. |

Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. | Sin Put Away by Christ's Sacrifice Hb.9.23-10.18 | Ἀνάγκη οὖν τὰ μὲν ὑποδείγματα τῶν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς τούτοις καθαρίζεσθαι, αὐτὰ δὲ τὰ ἐπουράνια κρείττοσιν θυσίαις παρὰ ταύτας. |

For Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. | | οὐ γὰρ εἰς χειροποίητα εἰσῆλθεν ἀγια Χριστός, ἀντίτυπα τῶν ἀληθινῶν, ἀλλ' εἰς αὐτὸν τὸν οὐρανόν, νῦν ἐμφανισθῆναι τῷ προσώπῳ τοῦ θεοῦ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν· |
25 |
Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the Holy Place yearly with blood not his own; | | οὐδ' ἵνα πολλάκις προσφέρῃ ἑαυτόν, ὡσπερ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἰσέρχεται εἰς τὰ ἀγια κατ' ἐνιαυτὸν ἐν αἱματι ἀλλοτρίῳ, |
26 |
for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. | | ἐπεὶ ἐδει αὐτὸν πολλάκις παθεῖν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου· νυνὶ δὲ ἀπαξ ἐπὶ συντελείᾳ τῶν αἰώνων εἰς ἀθέτησιν ἀμαρτίας διὰ τῆς θυσίας αὐτοῦ πεφανέρωται. |
27 |
And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment, | | καὶ καθ' ὁσον ἀπόκειται τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἀπαξ ἀποθανεῖν, μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο κρίσις, |
28 |
so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. | | οὑτως καὶ ὁ Χριστός, ἀπαξ προσενεχθεὶς εἰς τὸ πολλῶν ἀνενεγκεῖν ἀμαρτίας, ἐκ δευτέρου χωρὶς ἀμαρτίας ὀφθήσεται τοῖς αὐτὸν ἀπεκδεχομένοις εἰς σωτηρίαν. |
