New English Bible | Hebrews:2 | Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)
| Thus we are bound to pay all the more heed to what we have been told, for fear of drifting from our course. | The Great Salvation Hb.2.1-4 | Διὰ τοῦτο δεῖ περισσοτέρως προσέχειν ἡμᾶς τοῖς ἀκουσθεῖσιν, μήποτε παραρυῶμεν.
| For if the word spoken through angels had such force that any transgression or disobedience met with due retribution, | εἰ γὰρ ὁ δῖ ἀγγέλων λαληθεὶς λόγος ἐγένετο βέβαιος, καὶ πᾶσα παράβασις καὶ παρακοὴ ἐλαβεν ἐνδικον μισθαποδοσίαν,
| what escape can there be for us if we ignore a deliverance so great? For this deliverance was first announced through the lips of the Lord himself; those who heard him confirmed it to us, | πῶς ἡμεῖς ἐκφευξόμεθα τηλικαύτης ἀμελήσαντες σωτηρίας; ἡτις, ἀρχὴν λαβοῦσα λαλεῖσθαι διὰ τοῦ κυρίου, ὑπὸ τῶν ἀκουσάντων εἰς ἡμᾶς ἐβεβαιώθη,
| and God added his testimony by signs, by miracles, by manifold works of power, and by distributing the gifts of the Holy Spirit at his own will.
| For it is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, which is our theme. | - The Pioneer of Salvation Hb.2.5-18 | Οὐ γὰρ ἀγγέλοις ὑπέταξεν τὴν οἰκουμένην τὴν μέλλουσαν, περὶ ἧς λαλοῦμεν.
| But there is somewhere a solemn assurance which runs:
or the son of man, that thou hast regard to him? | - What is man that thou art mindful of him Hb.2.6-7 | Ps.8.5-7 | διεμαρΤύρατο δέ πού τις λέγων, Tί ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος ὅτι μιμνῄσκῃ αὐτοῦ,
| Thou didst make him for a short while lower than the angels; thou didst crown him with glory and honour; | ἠλάττωσας αὐτὸν βραχύ τι παρ' ἀγγέλους, δόξῃ καὶ τιμῇ ἐστεφάνωσας αὐτόν,
| thou didst put all things in subjection beneath his feet.' For in subjecting all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject. But in fact we do not yet see all things in subjection to man. | - putting everything in subjection under his feet.
| In Jesus, however, we do see one who | for a short while was made lower than the angels, crowned now with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that, by God's gracious will, in tasting death he should stand for us all.- who for a little while was made lower than the angels Hb.2.9 | Php.2.8-9 | τὸν δὲ βραχύ τι παρ' ἀγγέλους ἠλαττωμένον βλέπομεν Ἰησοῦν διὰ τὸ πάθημα τοῦ θανάτου δόξῃ καὶ τιμῇ ἐστεφανωμένον, ὁπως χάριτι θεοῦ ὑπὲρ παντὸς γεύσηται θανάτου.
| It was clearly fitting that God for whom and through whom all things exist should, in bringing many sons to glory, make the leader who delivers them perfect through sufferings.
| For a consecrating priest and those whom he consecrates are all of one stock, and that is why the Son does not shrink from calling men his brothers, | ὁ τε γὰρ ἀγιάζων καὶ οἱ ἀγιαζόμενοι ἐξ ἑνὸς πάντες· δῖ ἣν αἰτίαν οὐκ ἐπαισχύνεται ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοὺς καλεῖν,
| when he says, 'I will proclaim thy name to my brothers; in full assembly I will sing thy praise'; | - I will proclaim thy name to my brethren Hb.2.12 | Ps.22.22 | λέγων, Ἀπαγγελῶ τὸ ὄνομά σου τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου,
| and again, 'I will keep my trust fixed on him'; and again, 'Here am I, and the children whom God has given me.' | - I will put my trust in him Hb.2.13 | Is.8.17 | 2Sm.22.3 | Is.8.18 | καὶ πάλιν, Ἐγὼ ἔσομαι πεποιθὼς ἐπ' αὐτῷ· καὶ πάλιν, Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ καὶ τὰ παιδία ἅ μοι ἔδωκεν ὁ θεός.
| The children of a family share the same flesh and blood; and so he too shared ours, so that through death he might break the power of him who had death at his command, that is, the devil; | ἐπεὶ οὖν τὰ παιδία κεκοινώνηκεν αἱματος καὶ σαρκός, καὶ αὐτὸς παραπλησίως μετέσχεν τῶν αὐτῶν, ἵνα διὰ τοῦ θανάτου καταργήσῃ τὸν τὸ κράτος ἐχοντα τοῦ θανάτου, τοῦτ' ἐστ ιν τὸν διάβολον,
| and might liberate those who, through fear of death, had all their lifetime been in servitude.
| It is not angels, mark you, that he takes to himself, but the sons of Abraham. | - but with the descendants of Abraham.
| And therefore he had to be made like these brothers of his in every way, so that he might be merciful and faithful as their high priest before God, to expiate the sins of the people.
| For since he himself has passed through the test of suffering, he is able to help those who are meeting their test now.
