 New English Bible << Hebrews:10 >>Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)

1 FOR THE LAW CONTAINS but a shadow, and no true image, [One witness reads: a shadow and likeness ...] of the good things which were to come; it provides for the same sacrifices year after year, and with these it can never bring the worshippers to perfection for all time. [Or: bring to perfection the worshippers who come continually.]
2 If it could, these sacrifices would surely have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, cleansed once for all, would no longer have any sense of sin.  ἐπεὶ οὐκ ἂν ἐπαύσαντο προσφερόμεναι, διὰ τὸ μηδεμίαν ἐχειν ἐτι συνείδησιν ἀμαρτιῶν τοὺς λατρεύοντας ἀπαξ κεκαθαρισμένους;
3 But instead, in these sacrifices year after year sins are brought to mind,  ἀλλ' ἐν αὐταῖς ἀνάμνησις ἀμαρτιῶν κατ' ἐνιαυτόν,
4 because sins can never be removed by the blood of bulls and goats.
5 That is why, at his coming into the world, he says:
'Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire,
but thou hast prepared a body for me.
- Sacrifices and offerings thou hast not desired Hb.10.5-7 | Ps.40.6-8Διὸ εἰσερχόμενος εἰς τὸν κόσμον λέγει,

6 Whole-offerings and sin-offerings thou didst not delight in.

7 Then I said, "Here am I: as it is written of me in the scroll,
I have come, O God, to do thy will."'
8 First he says, 'Sacrifices and offerings, whole-offerings and sin-offerings, thou didst not desire nor delight in'—although the Law prescribes them— - Thou hast neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices Hb.10.8 | Ps.40.6ἀνώτερον λέγων ὅτι Θυσίας καὶ προσφορὰς καὶ ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας οὐκ ἠθέλησας οὐδὲ εὐδόκησας, αἱτινες κατὰ νόμον προσφέρονται,
9 and then he says, 'I have come to do thy will.' He thus annuls the former to establish the latter. - Lo, I have come to do thy will.
10 And it is by the will of God that we have been consecrated, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.
11 Every priest stands performing his service daily and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never remove sins.
12 But Christ offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat at the right hand of God, - he sat down at the right hand of God Hb.10.12 | Ps.110.1οὗτος δὲ μίαν ὑπὲρ ἀμαρτιῶν προσενέγκας θυσίαν εἰς τὸ διηνεκὲς ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ,
13 where he waits henceforth until his enemies are made his footstool. - his enemies should be made a stool for his feet Hb.10.13 | Ps.110.1τὸ λοιπὸν ἐκδεχόμενος ἕως τεθῶσιν οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτοῦ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ·
14 For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are thus consecrated.
15 Here we have also the testimony of the Holy Spirit: he first says,
16 'This is the covenant which I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will set my laws in their hearts and write them on their understanding'; - I will put my laws on their hearts Hb.10.16 | Jr.31.33Αὕτη ἡ διαθήκη ἣν διαθήσομαι πρὸς αὐτοὺς

17 then he adds, 'and their sins and wicked deeds I will remember no more at all.' - I will remember their sins and their misdeeds no more.
18 And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any offering for sin.
19 SO NOW, MY FRIENDS, the blood of Jesus makes us free to enter boldly into the sanctuary Exhortation and Warning Hb.10.19-39Ἔχοντες οὖν, ἀδελφοί, παρρησίαν εἰς τὴν εἰσοδον τῶν ἀγίων ἐν τῷ αἱματι Ἰησοῦ,
20 by the new, living way which he has opened for us through the curtain, the way of his flesh. [Or: through the curtain of his flesh.]
21 We have, moreover, a great priest set over the household of God;  καὶ ἱερέα μέγαν ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ,
22 so let us make our approach in sincerity of heart and full assurance of faith, our guilty hearts sprinkled clean, our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us be firm and unswerving in the confession of our hope, for the Giver of the promise may be trusted.
24 We ought to see how each of us may best arouse others to love and active goodness,  καὶ κατανοῶμεν ἀλλήλους εἰς παροξυσμὸν ἀγάπης καὶ καλῶν ἐργων,
25 not staying away from our meetings, as some do, but rather encouraging one another, all the more because you see the Day drawing near.
26 For if we persist in sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins remains:
27 only a terrifying expectation of judgement and a fierce fire which will consume God's enemies.
28 If a man disregards the Law of Moses, he is put to death without pity on the evidence of two or three witnesses. - A man who has violated the law of Moses dies Hb.10.28 | Dt.17.6 | Dt.19.15ἀθετήσας τις νόμον Μωϋσέως χωρὶς οἰκτιρμῶν ἐπὶ δυσὶν ἢ τρισὶν μάρτυσιν ἀποθνῄσκει·
29 Think how much more severe a penalty that man will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was consecrated, and affronted God's gracious Spirit!  πόσῳ δοκεῖτε χείρονος ἀξιωθήσεται τιμωρίας ὁ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καταπατήσας, καὶ τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης κοινὸν ἡγησάμενος ἐν ᾧ ἡγιάσθη, καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς χάριτος ἐνυβρίσας;
30 For we know who it is that has said, 'Justice is mine: I will repay'; and again, 'The Lord will judge his people.' - For we know him who said  Hb.10.30 | Dt.32.35οἰδαμεν γὰρ τὸν εἰπόντα,

31 It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 Remember the days gone by, when, newly enlightened, you met the challenge of great sufferings and held firm.
33 Some of you were abused and tormented to make a public show, while others stood loyally by those who were so treated.
34 For indeed you shared the sufferings of the prisoners, and you cheerfully accepted the seizure of your possessions, knowing that you possessed something better and more lasting.
35 Do not then throw away your confidence, for it carries a great reward.
36 You need endurance, if you are to do God's will and win what he has promised.
37 For 'soon, very soon' (in the words of Scripture), 'he who is to come will come; he will not delay; - Hb.10.37 | Hab.2.3-4 | Is.26.20ἐτι γὰρ μικρὸν ὁσον ὁσον,

38 and by faith my righteous servant shall find life; but if a man shrinks back, I take no pleasure in him.' - but my righteous one shall live by faith Hb.10.38 | Ro.1.17 | Ga.3.11ὁ δὲ δίκαιός μου ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται, καὶ ἐὰν ὑποστείληται, οὐκ εὐδοκεῖ ἡ ψυχή μου ἐν αὐτῷ.
39 But we are not among those who shrink back and are lost; we have the faith to make life our own.
