Agrippa said to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand and made his defence: | Paul Defends Himself before Agrippa Ac.26.1-11 | Ἀγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον ἐφη, Ἐπιτρέπεταί σοι περὶ σεαυτοῦ λέγειν. τότε ὁ Παῦλος ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἀπελογεῖτο, |

"I think myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I am to make my defence today against all the accusations of the Jews, | | Περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ Ἀγρίππα, ἡγημαι ἐμαυτὸν μακάριον ἐπὶ σοῦ μέλλων σήμερον ἀπολογεῖσθαι, |

because you are especially familiar with all customs and controversies of the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently. | | μάλιστα γνώστην ὀντα σε πάντων τῶν κατὰ Ἰουδαίους ἐθῶν τε καὶ ζητημάτων· διὸ δέομαι μακροθύμως ἀκοῦσαί μου. |

"My manner of life from my youth, spent from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem, is known by all the Jews. | | Τὴν μὲν οὖν βίωσίν μου ἐκ νεότητος τὴν ἀπ' ἀρχῆς γενομένην ἐν τῷ ἐθνει μου ἐν τε Ἱεροσολύμοις ἰσασι πάντες Ἰουδαῖοι, |

They have known for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion I have lived as a Pharisee. | | προγινώσκοντές με ἀνωθεν, ἐὰν θέλωσι μαρτυρεῖν, ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ἀκριβεστάτην αἱρεσιν τῆς ἡμετέρας θρησκείας ἐζησα Φαρισαῖος. |

And now I stand here on trial for hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, | | καὶ νῦν ἐπ' ἐλπίδι τῆς εἰς τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν ἐπαγγελίας γενομένης ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἑστηκα κρινόμενος, |

to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! | | εἰς ἣν τὸ δωδεκάφυλον ἡμῶν ἐν ἐκτενείᾳ νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν λατρεῦον ἐλπίζει καταντῆσαι· περὶ ἧς ἐλπίδος ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ. |

Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead? | | τί ἀπιστον κρίνεται παρ' ὑμῖν εἰ ὁ θεὸς νεκροὺς ἐγείρεὶ; |

"I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. | | ἐγὼ μὲν οὖν ἐδοξα ἐμαυτῷ πρὸς τὸ ὀνομα Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου δεῖν πολλὰ ἐναντία πρᾶξαι· |

And I did so in Jerusalem; I not only shut up many of the saints in prison, by authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. | | ὃ καὶ ἐποίησα ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις, καὶ πολλούς τε τῶν ἀγίων ἐγὼ ἐν φυλακαῖς κατέκλεισα τὴν παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων ἐξουσίαν λαβών, ἀναιρουμένων τε αὐτῶν κατήνεγκα ψῆφον, |

And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme; and in raging fury against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. | | καὶ κατὰ πάσας τὰς συναγωγὰς πολλάκις τιμωρῶν αὐτοὺς ἠνάγκαζον βλασφημεῖν, περισσῶς τε ἐμμαινόμενος αὐτοῖς ἐδίωκον ἑως καὶ εἰς τὰς ἐξω πόλεις. |

At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining round me and those who journeyed with me. | | ἡμέρας μέσης κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν εἶδον, βασιλεῦ, οὐρανόθεν ὑπὲρ τὴν λαμπρότητα τοῦ ἡλίου περιλάμψαν με φῶς καὶ τοὺς σὺν ἐμοὶ πορευομένους· |

And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.' | | πάντων τε καταπεσόντων ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἠκουσα φωνὴν λέγουσαν πρός με τῇ Ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ, Σαοὺλ Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις; σκληρόν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν. |

And I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. | | ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπα, Τίς εἶ, κύριὲ ὁ δὲ κύριος εἶπεν, Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις. |

But rise and stand upon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and bear witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, | | ἀλλὰ ἀνάστηθι καὶ στῆθι ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας σου· εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ὠφθην σοι, προχειρίσασθαί σε ὑπηρέτην καὶ μάρτυρα ὧν τε εἶδές ὧν τε ὀφθήσομαί σοι, |

delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles - to whom I send you | | ἐξαιρούμενός σε ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν, εἰς οὓς ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω σε |

to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.' | | ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν, τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι ἀπὸ σκότους εἰς φῶς καὶ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, τοῦ λαβεῖν αὐτοὺς ἀφεσιν ἀμαρτιῶν καὶ κλῆρον ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοι ς πίστει τῇ εἰς ἐμέ. |

"Wherefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, | Paul's Testimony to Jews and Gentiles Ac.26.19-23 | Ὅθεν, βασιλεῦ Ἀγρίππα, οὐκ ἐγενόμην ἀπειθὴς τῇ οὐρανίῳ ὀπτασίᾳ, |

but declared first to those at Damascus, then at Jerusalem and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and perform deeds worthy of their repentance. | | ἀλλὰ τοῖς ἐν Δαμασκῷ πρῶτόν τε καὶ Ἱεροσολύμοις, πᾶσάν τε τὴν χώραν τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ τοῖς ἐθνεσιν ἀπήγγελλον μετανοεῖν καὶ ἐπιστρέφειν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν, ἀξια τῆς μετανοίας ἐργα πράσσοντας. |

For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. | | ἑνεκα τούτων με Ἰουδαῖοι συλλαβόμενοι ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐπειρῶντο διαχειρίσασθαι. |
| 22 |
To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass: | | ἐπικουρίας οὖν τυχὼν τῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἀχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης ἑστηκα μαρτυρόμενος μικρῷ τε καὶ μεγάλῳ, οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς λέγων ὧν τε οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν μελλόντων γίνεσθαι καὶ Μωϋσῆς, |

that the Christ must suffer, and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles." | | εἰ παθητὸς ὁ Χριστός, εἰ πρῶτος ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν φῶς μέλλει καταγγέλλειν τῷ τε λαῷ καὶ τοῖς ἐθνεσιν. |

And as he thus made his defence, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are mad; your great learning is turning you mad." | Paul Appeals to Agrippa to Believe Ac.26.24-32 | Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀπολογουμένου ὁ Φῆστος μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ φησιν, Μαίνῃ, Παῦλε· τὰ πολλά σε γράμματα εἰς μανίαν περιτρέπει. |

But Paul said, "I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking the sober truth. | | ὁ δὲ Παῦλος, Οὐ μαίνομαι, φησίν, κράτιστε Φῆστε, ἀλλὰ ἀληθείας καὶ σωφροσύνης ῥήματα ἀποφθέγγομαι. |

For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak freely; for I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this was not done in a corner. | | ἐπίσταται γὰρ περὶ τούτων ὁ βασιλεύς, πρὸς ὃν καὶ παρρησιαζόμενος λαλῶ· λανθάνειν γὰρ αὐτὸν τούτων οὐ πείθομαι οὐθέν, οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἐν γωνίᾳ πεπραγμένον τοῦτο. |
| 27 |
King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe." | | πιστεύεις, βασιλεῦ Ἀγρίππα, τοῖς προφήταις; οἶδα ὅτι πιστεύεις. |
| 28 |
And Agrippa said to Paul, "In a short time you think to make me a Christian!" | | ὁ δὲ Ἀγρίππας πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον, Ἐν ὀλίγῳ με πείθεις Χριστιανὸν ποιῆσαι. |
| 29 |
And Paul said, "Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am - except for these chains." | | ὁ δὲ Παῦλος, Εὐξαίμην ἂν τῷ θεῷ καὶ ἐν ὀλίγῳ καὶ ἐν μεγάλῳ οὐ μόνον σὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντάς μου σήμερον γενέσθαι τοιούτους ὁποῖος καὶ ἐγώ εἰμι, παρεκτὸς τῶν δεσμῶν τούτων. |
| 30 |
Then the king rose, and the governor and Bernice and those who were sitting with them; | | Ἀνέστη τε ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ὁ ἡγεμὼν ἡ τε Βερνίκη καὶ οἱ συγκαθήμενοι αὐτοῖς, |
| 31 |
and when they had withdrawn, they said to one another, "This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment." | | καὶ ἀναχωρήσαντες ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες ὅτι Οὐδὲν θανάτου ἢ δεσμῶν ἀξιον πράσσει ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος. |
| 32 |
And Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." | | Ἀγρίππας δὲ τῷ Φήστῳ ἐφη, Ἀπολελύσθαι ἐδύνατο ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος εἰ μὴ ἐπεκέκλητο Καίσαρα. |
