| IN THE FIFTEENTH YEAR of the Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, when Herod was prince of Galilee, his brother Philip prince of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias prince of Abilene, | The Preaching of John the Baptist Lk.3.1-9 (Bethabara) - | Mt.3.1-12 | Mk.1.1-8 | Jn.1.19-28 | ἐν ἐτει δὲ πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ τῆς ἡγεμονίας τιβερίου Καίσαρος, ἡγεμονεύοντος Ποντίου Πιλάτου τῆς Ἰουδαίας, καὶ τετρααρχοῦντος τῆς Γαλιλαίας Ἡρῴδου, Φιλίππου δὲ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτο ῦ τετρααρχοῦντος τῆς Ἰτουραιας καὶ Τραχωνίτιδος χώρας, καὶ Λυσανίου τῆς Ἀβ
| during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
| And he went all over the Jordan valley proclaiming a baptism in token of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, | καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς πᾶσαν | περίχωρον τοῦ Ἰορδάνου κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἀφεσιν ἀμαρτιῶν,||
| as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Isaiah:
"Prepare a way for the Lord; Clear a straight path for him. | - The voice of one crying in the wilderness Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
| Every ravine shall be filled in, And every mountain and hill levelled; The corners shall be straightened, And the rough ways made smooth; | πᾶσα φάραγξ πληρωθήσεται καὶ πᾶν ὄρος καὶ βουνὸς ταπεινωθήσεται, καὶ ἔσται τὰ σκολιὰ εἰς εὐθείαν καὶ αἱ τραχεῖαι εἰς ὁδοὺς λείας·
| And all mankind shall see God's deliverance."
| Crowds of people came out to be baptized by him, and he said to them: 'You vipers' brood! Who warned you to escape from the coming retribution? | Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὀχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ' αὐτοῦ, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;
| Then prove your repentance by the fruit it bears; and do not begin saying to yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father." I tell you that God can make children for Abraham out of these stones here.
| Already the axe is laid to the roots of the trees; and every tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire.'
| The people asked him, 'Then what are we to do?' | Καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὀχλοι λέγοντες, Τί οὖν ποιήσωμεν;
| He replied, 'The man with two shirts must share with him who has none, and anyone who has food must do the same.'
| Among those who came to be baptized were tax-gatherers, and they said to him, 'Master, what are we to do?' | ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν, Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσωμεν;
| He told them, 'Exact no more than the assessment.'
| Soldiers on service also asked him, 'And what of us?' To them he said, 'No bullying; no blackmail; make do with your pay!'
| The people were on the tiptoe of expectation, all wondering about John, whether perhaps he was the Messiah, | Προσδοκῶντος δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ διαλογιζομένων πάντων ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ Ἰωάννου, μήποτε αὐτὸς εἰη ὁ Χριστός,
| but he spoke out and said to them all, 'I baptize you with water; but there is one to come who is mightier than I. I am not fit to unfasten his shoes. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
| His shovel is ready in his hand, to winnow his threshing-floor and gather the wheat into his granary; but he will burn the chaff on a fire that can never go out.'
| In this and many other ways he made his appeal to the people and announced the good news.
| But Prince Herod, when he was rebuked by him over the affair of his brother's wife Herodias and for his other misdeeds, | ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης, ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ' αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρῳδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν πονηρῶν ὁ Ἡρῴδης,
| crowned them all by shutting John up in prison.
| DURING A GENERAL BAPTISM of the people, when Jesus too had been baptized and was praying, heaven opened | The Baptism of Jesus Lk.3.21-22 (Bethabara) - | Mt.3.13-17 | Mk.1.9-11 | Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ βαπτισθῆναι ἀπαντα τὸν λαὸν καὶ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθέντος καὶ προσευχομένου ἀνεῳχθῆναι τὸν οὐρανὸν
| and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove; and there came a voice from heaven,'Thou art my Son, my Beloved; | on thee my favour rests.'καὶ καταβῆναι τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἀγιον σωματικῷ εἰδει ὡς περιστερὰν ἐπ' αὐτόν, καὶ φωνὴν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ γενέσθαι, Σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα.
