2 | 'Tell us', they said, 'by what authority you are acting like this; who gave you this authority?' | καὶ εἶπαν λέγοντες πρὸς αὐτόν, Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, ἢ τίς ἐστιν ὁ δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην. | ||
3 | He answered them, 'I have a question to ask you too: tell me, | ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ λόγον, καὶ εἰπατέ μοι· | ||
4 | was the baptism of John from God or from men?' | Τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; | ||
5 | This set them arguing among themselves: 'If we say, "from God", he will say, "Why did you not believe him?" | οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἐὰν εἰπωμεν, Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, Διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ; | ||
6 | And if we say, "from men", the people will all stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.' | ἐὰν δὲ εἰπωμεν, Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, ὁ λαὸς ἀπας καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς, πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι. | ||
7 | So they replied that they could not tell. | καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν μὴ εἰδέναι πόθεν. | ||
8 | And Jesus said to them, 'Neither will I tell you by what authority I act.' | καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ. | ||

10 | When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce; but the tenants thrashed him and sent him away empty-handed. | καὶ καιρῷ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς δοῦλον, ἵνα ἀπὸ τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος δώσουσιν αὐτῷ· οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν δείραντες κενόν. | ||
11 | He tried again and sent a second servant; but he also was thrashed, outrageously treated, and sent away empty-handed. | καὶ προσέθετο ἑτερον πέμψαι δοῦλον· οἱ δὲ κἀκεῖνον δείραντες καὶ ἀτιμάσαντες ἐξαπέστειλαν κενόν. | ||
12 | He tried once more with a third; this one too they wounded and flung out. | καὶ προσέθετο τρίτον πέμψαι· οἱ δὲ καὶ τοῦτον τραυματίσαντες ἐξέβαλον. | ||
13 | Then the owner of the vineyard said, "What am I to do? I will send my own dear son; | perhaps they will respect him."εἶπεν δὲ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, Τί ποιήσὼ πέμψω; τὸν υἱόν μου τὸν ἀγαπητόν· ἰσως τοῦτον ἐντραπήσονται. | ||
14 | But when the tenants saw him they talked it over together. "This is the heir," they said; "let us kill him so that the property may come to us." | ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ γεωργοὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν, ἵνα ἡμῶν γένηται ἡ κληρονομία. | ||
15 | So they flung him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? | καὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἐξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν. τί οὖν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος; | ||
16 | He will come and put these tenants to death and let the vineyard to others.' | ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργοὺς τούτους, καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἀλλοις. ἀκούσαντες δὲ εἶπαν, Μὴ γένοιτο. | ||
17 | When they heard this, they said, 'God forbid!' But he looked straight at them and said, 'Then what does this text of Scripture mean: "The stone which the builders rejected has become the main corner-stone"? | - The very stone which the builders rejected Lk.20.17-18 | Ps.118.22 | ὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπεν, Τί οὖν ἐστιν τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο· Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, | |
18 | Any man who falls on that stone will be dashed to pieces; and if it falls on a man he will be crushed by it.' | πᾶς ὁ πεσὼν ἐπ' ἐκεῖνον τὸν λίθον συνθλασθήσεται· ἐφ' ὃν δ' ἂν πέσῃ, λικμήσει αὐτόν. | ||
19 | The lawyers and chief priests wanted to lay hands on him there and then, for they saw that this parable was aimed at them; but they were afraid of the people. | Καὶ ἐζήτησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ' αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὡρᾳ, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν λαόν· ἐγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην. | ||

23 | He saw through their trick and said, 'Show me a silver piece. | κατανοήσας δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πανουργίαν εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, | ||

26 | Thus their attempt to catch him out in public failed, and, astonished by his reply, they fell silent. | καὶ οὐκ ἰσχυσαν ἐπιλαβέσθαι αὐτοῦ ῥήματος ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ θαυμάσαντες ἐπὶ τῇ ἀποκρίσει αὐτοῦ ἐσίγησαν. | ||
27 | Then some Sadducees came forward. They are the people who deny that there is a resurrection. 28 | 'Master, Moses laid it down for us that if there are brothers, and one dies leaving a wife but no child, then the next should marry the widow and carry on his brother's family. | λέγοντες, Διδάσκαλε, Μωϋσῆς ἐγραψεν ἡμῖν, ἐάν τινος ἀδελφὸς ἀποθάνῃ ἐχων γυναῖκα, καὶ οὗτος ἀτεκνος ᾖ, ἵνα λάβῃ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ ἐξαναστήσῃ σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ. | ||
29 | Now, there were seven brothers: the first took a wife and died childless; | ἑπτὰ οὖν ἀδελφοὶ ἦσαν· καὶ ὁ πρῶτος λαβὼν γυναῖκα ἀπέθανεν ἀτεκνος· | ||
30 | then the second married her, | καὶ ὁ δεύτερος | ||
31 | then the third. In this way the seven of them died leaving no children. | καὶ ὁ τρίτος ἐλαβεν αὐτήν, ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ οὐ κατέλιπον τέκνα καὶ ἀπέθανον. | ||
32 | Afterwards the woman also died. | ὑστερον καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἀπέθανεν. | ||
33 | At the resurrection whose wife is she to be, since all seven had married her?' | ἡ γυνὴ οὖν ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει τίνος αὐτῶν γίνεται γυνή; οἱ γὰρ ἑπτὰ ἐσχον αὐτὴν γυναῖκα. | ||
34 | Jesus said to them, 'The men and women of this world marry; | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου γαμοῦσιν καὶ γαμίσκονται, | ||
35 | but those who have been judged worthy of a place in the other world and of the resurrection from the dead, do not marry, | οἱ δὲ καταξιωθέντες τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐκείνου τυχεῖν καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῆς ἐκ νεκρῶν οὐτε γαμοῦσιν οὐτε γαμίζονται· | ||
36 | for they are not subject to death any longer. They are like angels; they are sons of God, because they share in the resurrection. | οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀποθανεῖν ἐτι δύνανται, ἰσάγγελοι γάρ εἰσιν, καὶ υἱοί εἰσιν θεοῦ, τῆς ἀναστάσεως υἱοὶ ὄντες. | ||
37 | That the dead are raised to life again is shown by Moses himself in the story of the burning bush, when he calls the Lord, "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob". | - even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush Lk.20.37 | Ex.3.2-6 | ὁτι δὲ ἐγείρονται οἱ νεκροὶ καὶ Μωϋσῆς ἐμήνυσεν ἐπὶ τῆς βάτου, ὡς λέγει κύριον τὸν θεὸν Ἀβραὰμ καὶ θεὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ θεὸν Ἰακώβ· | |

46 | 'Beware of the doctors of the law who love to walk up and down in long robes, and have a great liking for respectful greetings in the street, the chief seats in our synagogues, and places of honour at feasts. | Προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῶν γραμματέων τῶν θελόντων περιπατεῖν ἐν στολαῖς καὶ φιλούντων ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς καὶ πρωτοκαθεδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ πρωτοκλισίας ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις , | ||
47 | These are the men who eat up the property of widows, while they say long prayers for appearance' sake; and they will receive the severest sentence.' | οἳ κατεσθίουσιν τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσεύχονται· οὗτοι λήμψονται περισσότερον κρίμα. | ||
