| 2 | and noticed that some of his disciples were eating their food with 'defiled' hands—in other words, without washing them. | καὶ ἰδόντες τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὅτι κοιναῖς χερσίν, τοῦτ' ἐστιν ἀνίπτοις, ἐσθίουσιν τοὺς ἀρτους | ||
| 3 | (For the Pharisees and the Jews in general never eat without washing the hands, in obedience to an old-established tradition; | - οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν, κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων, | ||
| 4 | and on coming from the market-place they never eat without first washing. And there are many other points on which they have a traditional rule to maintain, for example, washing of cups and jugs and copper bowls.) | καὶ ἀπ' ἀγορᾶς ἐὰν μὴ βαπτίσωνται οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν, καὶ ἀλλα πολλά ἐστιν ἂ παρέλαβον κρατεῖν, βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων - | ||
| 5 | Accordingly, these Pharisees and the lawyers asked him, 'Why do your disciples not conform to the ancient tradition, but eat their food with defiled hands?' | καὶ ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς, Διὰ τί οὐ περιπατοῦσιν οἱ μαθηταί σου κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων, ἀλλὰ κοιναῖς χερσὶν ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἀρτον; | ||
| 6 | He answered, 'Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in these words: "This people pays me lip-service, but their heart is far from me: | - This people honours me with their lips Mk.7.6-7 | Is.29.13 | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἠσαΐας περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν, ὡς γέγραπται ὁτι Οὗτος ὁ λαὸς τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ, | |
| 7 | their worship of me is in vain, for they teach as doctrines the commandments of men." | μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με, διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων. | ||
| 8 | You neglect the commandment of God, in order to maintain the tradition of men.' | ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων. | ||
| 9 | He also said to them, 'How well you set aside the commandment of God in order to maintain your tradition! | Καὶ ἐλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν στήσητε. | ||

| 11 | But you hold that if a man says to his father or mother, "Anything of mine which might have been used for your benefit is Corban"' (meaning, set apart for God), | ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε, Ἐὰν εἰπῃ ἄνθρωπος τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί, Κορβᾶν, ὁ ἐστιν, Δῶρον, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς, | ||
| 12 | 'he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother. | οὐκέτι ἀφίετε αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ποιῆσαι τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί, | ||
| 13 | Thus by your own tradition, handed down among you, you make God's word null and void. And many other things that you do are just like that.' | ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ τῇ παραδόσει ὑμῶν ᾗ παρεδώκατε· καὶ παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε. | ||
| 14 | On another occasion he called the people and said to them, 'Listen to me, all of you, and understand this: | Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος πάλιν τὸν ὀχλον ἐλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Ἀκούσατέ μου πάντες καὶ σύνετε. | ||
| 15 | nothing that goes into a man from outside can defile him; no, it is the things that come out of him that defile a man.' | οὐδέν ἐστιν ἐξωθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς αὐτὸν ὃ δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτόν· ἀλλὰ τὰ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον. | ||

| 17 | When he had left the people and gone indoors, his is disciples questioned him about the parable. | Καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς οἶκον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀχλου, ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν παραβολήν. | ||
| 18 | He said to them, 'Are you as dull as the rest? Do you not see that nothing that goes from outside into a man can | καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Οὑτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστὲ οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἐξωθεν εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι, | ||
| 19 | defile him, because it does not enter into his heart but into his stomach, and so passes out into the drain?' | ὁτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ἀλλ' εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν, καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεταὶ - καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα. | ||
| 20 | Thus he declared all foods clean. He went on, 'It is what comes out of a man that defiles him. | ἐλεγεν δὲ ὅτι Τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον· | ||
| 21 | For from inside, out of a man's heart, come evil thoughts, acts of fornication, of theft, murder, | ἐσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, φόνοι, | ||
| 22 | adultery, ruthless greed, and malice; fraud, indecency, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly; | μοιχεῖαι, πλεονεξίαι, πονηρίαι, δόλος, ἀσέλγεια, ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός, βλασφημία, ὑπερηφανία, ἀφροσύνη· | ||
| 23 | these evil things all come from inside, and they defile the man.' | πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἐσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. | ||
| 24 | Then he left that place and went away into the territory of Tyre. | 25 | Almost at once a woman whose young daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard of him, came in, and fell at his feet. | ἀλλ' εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα γυνὴ περὶ αὐτοῦ, ἧς εἶχεν τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς Πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον, ἐλθοῦσα προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ· | ||
| 26 | (She was a Gentile, a Phoenician of Syria by nationality.) She begged him to drive the spirit out of her daughter. | ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἦν Ἑλληνίς, ΣυροΦοινίκισσα τῷ γένει· καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκβάλῃ ἐκ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς. | ||
| 27 | He said to her, 'Let the children be satisfied first; it is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.' | καὶ ἐλεγεν αὐτῇ, Ἄφες πρῶτον χορτασθῆναι τὰ τέκνα, οὐ γάρ ἐστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἀρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ τοῖς κυναρίοις βαλεῖν. | ||
| 28 | 'Sir,' she answered, 'even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps.' | ἡ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Κύριε, καὶ τὰ κυνάρια ὑποκάτω τῆς τραπέζης ἐσθίουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν παιδίων. | ||
| 29 | He said to her, 'For saying that, you may go home content; the unclean spirit has gone out of your daughter.' | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, Διὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον ὑπαγε, ἐξελήλυθεν ἐκ τῆς θυγατρός σου τὸ δαιμόνιον. | ||
| 30 | And when she returned home, she found the child lying in bed; the spirit had left her. | καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός. | ||

| 32 | They brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, with the request that he would lay his hand on him. | καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον, καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ αὐτῷ τὴν χεῖρα. | ||
| 33 | He took the man aside, away from the crowd, put his fingers into his ears, spat, and touched his tongue. | καὶ ἀπολαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀχλου κατ' ἰδίαν ἐβαλεν τοὺς δακτύλους αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ καὶ πτύσας ἡψατο τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ, | ||
| 34 | Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, 'Ephphatha', which means 'Be opened.' | καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐστέναξεν, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Εφφαθα, ὁ ἐστιν, Διανοίχθητι. | ||
| 35 | With that his ears were opened, and at the same time the impediment was removed and he spoke plainly. | καὶ ἠνοίγησαν αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί, καὶ ἐλύθη ὁ δεσμὸς τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς. | ||
| 36 | Jesus forbade them to tell anyone; but the more he forbade them, the more they published it. | καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν· ὁσον δὲ αὐτοῖς διεστέλλετο, αὐτοὶ μᾶλλον περισσότερον ἐκήρυσσον. | ||
| 37 | Their astonishment knew no bounds: 'All that he does, he does well,' they said; 'he even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.' | καὶ ὑπερπερισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες, Καλῶς πάντα πεποίηκεν· καὶ τοὺς κωφοὺς ποιεῖ ἀκούειν καὶ ἀλάλους λαλεῖν. | ||
