So he got into the boat and crossed over, and came to his own town.

And now some men brought him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith Jesus said to the man, 'Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.' | | καὶ ἰδοὺ προσέφερον αὐτῷ παραλυτικὸν ἐπὶ κλίνης βεβλημένον. καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν εἶπεν τῷ παραλυτικῷ, θάρσει, τέκνον· ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἀμαρτίαι. |

At this some of the lawyers said to themselves, 'This is blasphemous talk.' | | καὶ ἰδού τινες τῶν γραμματέων εἶπαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, Οὗτος βλασφημεῖ. |

Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said, 'Why do you harbour these evil thoughts? | | καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὰς ἐνθυμήσεις αὐτῶν εἶπεν, Ἱνατί ἐνθυμεῖσθε πονηρὰ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν; |

Is it easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven", or to say, "Stand up and walk"? | | τί γάρ ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν, Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἀμαρτίαι, ἢ εἰπεῖν, Ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτεὶ; |

But to convince you that the Son of Man has the right on earth to forgive sins'?he turned to the paralysed man?'stand up, take your bed, and go home.' | | ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἐχει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀφιέναι ἀμαρτίας - τότε λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ, Ἐγερθεὶς ἆρόν σου τὴν κλίνην καὶ ὑπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶ κόν σου. |

Thereupon the man got up, and went off home. | | καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ. |

The people were filled with awe at the sight, and praised God for granting such authority to men.
| | ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ὀχλοι ἐφοβήθησαν καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν θεὸν τὸν δόντα ἐξουσίαν τοιαύτην τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. |

AS HE PASSED ON from there Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his seat in the custom-house; and he said to him, 'Follow me.' And Matthew rose and followed him.

When Jesus was at table in the house, many bad characters—tax-gatherers and others—were seated with him and his disciples. | | Καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτοῦ ἀνακειμένου ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ, καὶ ἰδοὺ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἀμαρτωλοὶ ἐλθόντες συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ. |

The Pharisees noticed this, and said to his disciples, 'Why is it that your master eats with tax-gatherers and sinners?' | | καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, Διὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἀμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει ὁ διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν; |

Jesus heard them and said, 'It is not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick. | | ὁ δὲ ἀκούσας εἶπεν, οὐ χρείαν ἐχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλ' οἱ κακῶς ἐχοντες. |

Go and learn what that text means, "I require mercy, not sacrifice." I did not come to invite virtuous people, but sinners.'

Jesus replied, 'Can you expect the bridegroom's friends to go mourning while the bridegroom is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; that will be the time for them to fast.
| | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν ἐφ' ὁσον μετ' αὐτῶν ἐστιν ὁ νυμφίος; ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὁταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ' αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν. |

'No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on to an old coat; for then the patch tears away from the coat, and leaves a bigger hole. | | οὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ· αἰρει γὰρ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου, καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται. |

No more do you put new wine into old wine-skins; if you do, the skins burst, and then the wine runs out and the skins are spoilt. No, you put new wine into fresh skins; then both are preserved.'
| | οὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μή γε, ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοί, καὶ ὁ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπόλλυνται· ἀλλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς κ αινούς, καὶ ἀμφότεροι συντηροῦνται. |

Jesus rose and went with him, and so did his disciples.
| | καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ. |

Then a woman who had suffered from haemorrhages for twelve years came up from behind, and touched the edge of his cloak; | | Καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ αἱμορροοῦσα δώδεκα ἐτη προσελθοῦσα ὀπισθεν ἡψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ· |

for she said to herself, 'If I can only touch his cloak, I shall be cured.' | | ἐλεγεν γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτῇ, Ἐὰν μόνον ἀψωμαι τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ σωθήσομαι. |

But Jesus turned and saw her, and said, 'My daughter, your faith has cured you.' And from that moment she recovered.
| | ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς στραφεὶς καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν εἶπεν, Θάρσει, θύγατερ· ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε. καὶ ἐσώθη ἡ γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῆς ὡρας ἐκείνης. |

When Jesus arrived at the president's house and saw the flute-players and the general commotion, | | Καὶ ἐλθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχοντος καὶ ἰδὼν τοὺς αὐλητὰς καὶ τὸν ὀχλον θορυβούμενον |

he said, 'Be off! The girl is not dead: she is asleep'; but they only laughed at him. | | ἐλεγεν, Ἀναχωρεῖτε, οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν τὸ κοράσιον ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ. |

But, when everyone had been turned out, he went into the room and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. | | ὅτε δὲ ἐξεβλήθη ὁ ὀχλος, εἰσελθὼν ἐκράτησεν τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς, καὶ ἠγέρθη τὸ κοράσιον. |

This story became the talk of all the country round.
| | καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἡ φήμη αὑτη εἰς ὁλην τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην. |

And when he had gone indoors they came to him. Jesus asked, 'Do you believe that I have the power to do what you want?' 'Yes, sir', they said. | | ἐλθόντι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ τυφλοί, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Πιστεύετε ὅτι δύναμαι τοῦτο ποιῆσαὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Ναί, κύριε. |

Then he touched their eyes, and said, 'As you have believed, so let it be'; | | τότε ἡψατο τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν λέγων, Κατὰ τὴν πίστιν ὑμῶν γενηθήτω ὑμῖν. |
| 30 |
and their sight was restored. Jesus said to them sternly, 'See that no one hears about this.' | | καὶ ἠνεῴχθησαν αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί. καὶ ἐνεβριμήθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων, Ὁρᾶτε μηδεὶς γινωσκέτω. |

But as soon as they had gone out they talked about him all over the countryside.
| | οἱ δὲ ἐξελθόντες διεφήμισαν αὐτὸν ἐν ὁλῃ τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ. |

They were on their way out when a man was brought to him, who was dumb and possessed by a devil; | The Healing of a Dumb Man Mt.9.32-34 (Capernaum) - | Αὐτῶν δὲ ἐξερχομένων ἰδοὺ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπον κωφὸν δαιμονιζόμενον· |

the devil was cast out and the patient recovered his speech. Filled with amazement the onlookers said, 'Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.' | | καὶ ἐκβληθέντος τοῦ δαιμονίου ἐλάλησεν ὁ κωφός· καὶ ἐθαύμασαν οἱ ὀχλοι λέγοντες, Οὐδέποτε ἐφάνη οὑτως ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ. |

| | οἱ δὲ Φαρισαῖοι ἐλεγον, ἐν τῷ ἀρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια. |

The sight of the people moved him to pity: they were like sheep without a shepherd, harassed and helpless; | | Ἰδὼν δὲ τοὺς ὀχλους ἐσπλαγχνίσθη περὶ αὐτῶν ὅτι ἦσαν ἐσκυλμένοι καὶ ἐρριμμένοι ὡσεὶ πρόβατα μὴ ἐχοντα ποιμένα. |

and he said to his disciples, 'The crop is heavy, but labourers are scarce; | | τότε λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, Ὁ μὲν θερισμὸς πολύς, οἱ δὲ ἐργάται ὀλίγοι· |
| 38 |
you must therefore beg the owner to send labourers to harvest his crop.'
| | δεήθητε οὖν τοῦ κυρίου τοῦ θερισμοῦ ὁπως ἐκβάλῃ ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν θερισμὸν αὐτοῦ. |
