| 1 | THE LEADERS OF THE PEOPLE settled in Jerusalem; and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one in every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine lived in other towns. | NEHEMIAH. Ne.11.1-36 | וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׂרֵי־הָעָם בִּירוּשָׁלִָם וּשְׁאָר הָעָם הִפִּילוּ גֹורָלֹות לְהָבִיא אֶחָד מִן־הָעֲשָׂרָה לָשֶׁבֶת בִּירוּשָׁלִַם עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְתֵשַׁע הַיָּדֹות בֶּעָרִים׃ | |
| 2 | And the people were grateful to all those who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. | וַיְבָרֲכוּ הָעָם לְכֹל הָאֲנָשִׁים הַמִּתְנַדְּבִים לָשֶׁבֶת בִּירוּשָׁלִָם׃ ף | ||
| 3 | These are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but, in the towns of Judah, other Israelites, priests, Levites, temple-servitors, and descendants of Solomon's servants lived on their own property, in their own towns. | וְאֵלֶּה רָאשֵׁי הַמְּדִינָה אֲשֶׁר יָשְׁבוּ בִּירוּשָׁלִָם וּבְעָרֵי יְהוּדָה יָשְׁבוּ אִישׁ בַּאֲחֻזָּתֹו בְּעָרֵיהֶם יִשְׂרָאֵל הַכֹּהֲנִים וְהַלְוִיִּם וְהַנְּתִינִים וּבְנֵי עַבְדֵי שְׁלֹמֹה׃ | ||
| 4 | Some members of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. Of Judah: Athaiah son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel of the family of Perez, | וּבִירוּשָׁלִַם יָשְׁבוּ מִבְּנֵי יְהוּדָה וּמִבְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן מִבְּנֵי יְהוּדָה עֲתָיָה בֶן־עֻזִּיָּה בֶּן־זְכַרְיָה בֶן־אֲמַרְיָה בֶּן־שְׁפַטְיָה בֶן־מַהֲלַלְאֵל מִבְּנֵי־פָרֶץ׃ | ||
| 5 | (6) all of whose family, to the number of four hundred and sixty-eight men of substance, lived in Jerusalem; | וּמַעֲשֵׂיָה בֶן־בָּרוּךְ בֶּן־כָּל־חֹזֶה בֶּן־חֲזָיָה בֶן־עֲדָיָה בֶן־יֹויָרִיב בֶּן־זְכַרְיָה בֶּן־הַשִּׁלֹנִי׃ | ||
| 6 | (5) and Maaseiah son of Baruch, son of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah of the Shelanite family. | כָּל־בְּנֵי־פֶרֶץ הַיֹּשְׁבִים בִּירוּשָׁלִָם אַרְבַּע מֵאֹות שִׁשִּׁים וּשְׁמֹנָה אַנְשֵׁי־חָיִל׃ ס | ||
| 7 | These were the Benjamites: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Isaiah, | וְאֵלֶּה בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִן סַלֻּא בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־יֹועֵד בֶּן־פְּדָיָה בֶן־קֹולָיָה בֶן־מַעֲשֵׂיָה בֶּן־אִיתִיאֵל בֶּן־יְשַׁעְיָה׃ | ||
| 8 | and his kinsmen Gabbai and Sallai, nine hundred and twenty-eight in all. | וְאַחֲרָיו גַּבַּי סַלָּי תְּשַׁע מֵאֹות עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמֹנָה׃ | ||
| 9 | Joel son of Zichri was their overseer, and Judah son of Hassenuah was second over the city . | וְיֹואֵל בֶּן־זִכְרִי פָּקִיד עֲלֵיהֶם וִיהוּדָה בֶן־הַסְּנוּאָה עַל־הָעִיר מִשְׁנֶה׃ ף | ||
| 10 | Of the priests: Jedaiah son of Joiarib, son of | מִן־הַכֹּהֲנִים יְדַעְיָה בֶן־יֹויָרִיב יָכִין׃ | ||
| 11 | Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, supervisor of the house of God, | שְׂרָיָה בֶן־חִלְקִיָּה בֶּן־מְשֻׁלָּם בֶּן־צָדֹוק בֶּן־מְרָיֹות בֶּן־אֲחִיטוּב נְגִד בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים׃ | ||
| 12 | and his brethren responsible for the work in the temple, eight hundred and twenty-two in all; and Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchiah, | וַאֲחֵיהֶם עֹשֵׂי הַמְּלָאכָה לַבַּיִת שְׁמֹנֶה מֵאֹות עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנָיִם וַעֲדָיָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָם בֶּן־פְּלַלְיָה בֶּן־אַמְצִי בֶן־זְכַרְיָה בֶּן־פַּשְׁחוּר בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּה׃ | ||
| 13 | and his brethren, heads of fathers' houses, two hundred and forty-two in all; and Amasai son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer, | וְאֶחָיו רָאשִׁים לְאָבֹות מָאתַיִם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁנָיִם וַעֲמַשְׁסַי בֶּן־עֲזַרְאֵל בֶּן־אַחְזַי בֶּן־מְשִׁלֵּמֹות בֶּן־אִמֵּר׃ | ||
| 14 | and his brethren, men of substance, a hundred and twenty-eight in all; their overseer was Zabdiel son of Haggedolim. | וַאֲחֵיהֶם גִּבֹּורֵי חַיִל מֵאָה עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁמֹנָה וּפָקִיד עֲלֵיהֶם זַבְדִּיאֵל בֶּן־הַגְּדֹולִים׃ ס | ||
| 15 | And of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni; | וּמִן־הַלְוִיִּם שְׁמַעְיָה בֶן־חַשּׁוּב בֶּן־עַזְרִיקָם בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָה בֶּן־בּוּנִּי׃ | ||
| 16 | and Shabbethai and Jozabad of the chiefs of the Levites, who had charge of the external business of the house of God; | וְשַׁבְּתַי וְיֹוזָבָד עַל־הַמְּלָאכָה הַחִיצֹנָה לְבֵית הָאֱלֹהִים מֵרָאשֵׁי הַלְוִיִּם׃ | ||
| 17 | and Mattaniah son of Micah, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, who as precentor led the prayer of thanksgiving, and Bakbukiah who held the second place among his brethren; and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun. | וּמַתַּנְיָה בֶן־מִיכָה בֶּן־זַבְדִּי בֶן־אָסָף רֹאשׁ הַתְּחִלָּה יְהֹודֶה לַתְּפִלָּה וּבַקְבֻּקְיָה מִשְׁנֶה מֵאֶחָיו וְעַבְדָּא בֶּן־שַׁמּוּעַ בֶּן־גָּלָל בֶּן־[כ= יְדִיתוּן] [ק= יְדוּתוּן]׃ | ||
| 18 | The number of Levites in the holy city was two hundred and eighty-four in all. | כָּל־הַלְוִיִּם בְּעִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ מָאתַיִם שְׁמֹנִים וְאַרְבָּעָה׃ ף | ||
| 19 | The gate-keepers who kept guard at the gates were Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren, a hundred and seventy-two. | וְהַשֹּׁועֲרִים עַקּוּב טַלְמֹון וַאֲחֵיהֶם הַשֹּׁמְרִים בַּשְּׁעָרִים מֵאָה שִׁבְעִים וּשְׁנָיִם׃ | ||
| 20 | The rest of the Israelites were in all the towns of Judah, each man on his own inherited property. | וּשְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵל הַכֹּהֲנִים הַלְוִיִּם בְּכָל־עָרֵי יְהוּדָה אִישׁ בְּנַחֲלָתֹו׃ | ||
| 21 | But the temple-servitors lodged on Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them. | וְהַנְּתִינִים יֹשְׁבִים בָּעֹפֶל וְצִיחָא וְגִשְׁפָּא עַל־הַנְּתִינִים׃ ף | ||
| 22 | The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, of the family of Asaph the singers, for the supervision of the business of the house of God. | וּפְקִיד הַלְוִיִּם בִּירוּשָׁלִַם עֻזִּי בֶן־בָּנִי בֶּן־חֲשַׁבְיָה בֶּן־מַתַּנְיָה בֶּן־מִיכָא מִבְּנֵי אָסָף הַמְשֹׁרְרִים לְנֶגֶד מְלֶאכֶת בֵּית־הָאֱלֹהִים׃ | ||
| 23 | For they were under the king's orders, and there was obligatory duty for the singers every day. | כִּי־מִצְוַת הַמֶּלֶךְ עֲלֵיהֶם וַאֲמָנָה עַל־הַמְשֹׁרְרִים דְּבַר־יֹום בְּיֹומֹו׃ | ||
| 24 | Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, of the family of Zerah son of Judah, was the king's adviser on all matters affecting the people. | וּפְתַחְיָה בֶּן־מְשֵׁיזַבְאֵל מִבְּנֵי־זֶרַח בֶּן־יְהוּדָה לְיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ לְכָל־דָּבָר לָעָם׃ | ||
| 25 | As for the hamlets with their surrounding fields: some of the men of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its villages, in Dibon and its villages, and in Jekabzeel and its hamlets, | וְאֶל־הַחֲצֵרִים בִּשְׂדֹתָם מִבְּנֵי יְהוּדָה יָשְׁבוּ בְּקִרְיַת הָאַרְבַּע וּבְנֹתֶיהָ וּבְדִיבֹן וּבְנֹתֶיהָ וּבִיקַּבְצְאֵל וַחֲצֵרֶיהָ׃ | ||
| 26 | in Jeshua, Moladah, and Bethpelet, | וּבְיֵשׁוּעַ וּבְמֹולָדָה וּבְבֵית פָּלֶט׃ | ||
| 27 | in Hazarshual, and in Beersheba and its villages, | וּבַחֲצַר שׁוּעָל וּבִבְאֵר שֶׁבַע וּבְנֹתֶיהָ׃ | ||
| 28 | in Ziklag and in Meconah and its villages, | וּבְצִקְלַג וּבִמְכֹנָה וּבִבְנֹתֶיהָ׃ | ||
| 29 | in Enrimmon, Zorah, and Jarmuth, | וּבְעֵין רִמֹּון וּבְצָרְעָה וּבְיַרְמוּת׃ | ||
| 30 | in Zanoah, Adullam, and their hamlets, in Lachish and its fields and Azekah and its villages. Thus they occupied the country from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom. | זָנֹחַ עֲדֻלָּם וְחַצְרֵיהֶם לָכִישׁ וּשְׂדֹתֶיהָ עֲזֵקָה וּבְנֹתֶיהָ וַיַּחֲנוּ מִבְּאֵר־שֶׁבַע עַד־גֵּיא־הִנֹּם׃ | ||
| 31 | The men of Benjamin lived in Geba, Michmash, Aiah, and Bethel with its villages, | וּבְנֵי בִנְיָמִן מִגָּבַע מִכְמָשׂ וְעַיָּה וּבֵית־אֵל וּבְנֹתֶיהָ׃ | ||
| 32 | in Anathoth, Nob, and Ananiah, | עֲנָתֹות נֹב עֲנָנְיָה׃ | ||
| 33 | in Hazor, Ramah, and Gittaim, | חָצֹור רָמָה גִּתָּיִם׃ | ||
| 34 | in Hadid, Zeboim, and Neballat, | חָדִיד צְבֹעִים נְבַלָּט׃ | ||
| 35 | in Lod, Ono, and Ge-harashim . | לֹד וְאֹונֹו גֵּי הַחֲרָשִׁים׃ | ||
| 36 | And certain divisions of the Levites in Judah were attached to Benjamin. | וּמִן־הַלְוִיִּם מַחְלְקֹות יְהוּדָה לְבִנְיָמִין׃ ף | ||
