1 Have you sinned, my son?
Do so no more, but pray about your former sins.
Sin. Sir.21.1-10Τέκνον, ἥμαρτες; μὴ προσθῇς μηκέτι,
καὶ περὶ τῶν προτέρων σου δεήθητι.
2 Flee from sin as from a snake;
for if you approach sin, it will bite you.
Its teeth are lion's teeth,
and destroy the souls of men.
 ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου ὄφεως φεῦγε ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίας·
ἐὰν γὰρ προσέλθῃς, δήξεταί σε·
ὀδόντες λέοντος οἱ ὀδόντες αὐτῆς,
ἀναιροῦντες ψυχὰς ἀνθρώπων.
3 All lawlessness is like a two-edged sword;
there is no healing for its wound.
 ὡς ῥομφαία δίστομος πᾶσα ἀνομία,
τῇ πληγῇ αὐτῆς οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις.
4 Terror and violence will lay waste riches;
thus the house of the proud will be laid waste.
 καταπληγμὸς καὶ ὕβρις ἐρημώσουσιν πλοῦτον·
οὕτως οἶκος ὑπερηφάνου ἐρημωθήσεται.
5 The prayer of a poor man goes from his lips to the ears of God,
and his judgment comes speedily.
 δέησις πτωχοῦ ἐκ στόματος ἕως ὠτίων αὐτοῦ,
καὶ τὸ κρίμα αὐτοῦ κατὰ σπουδὴν ἔρχεται.
6 Whoever hates reproof walks in the steps of the sinner,
but he that fears the Lord will repent in his heart.
 μισῶν ἐλεγμὸν ἐν ἴχνει ἁμαρτωλοῦ,
καὶ ὁ φοβούμενος κύριον ἐπιστρέψει ἐν καρδίᾳ.
7 He who is mighty in speech is known from afar;
but the sensible man, when he slips, is aware of it.
 γνωστὸς μακρόθεν ὁ δυνατὸς ἐν γλώσσῃ,
ὁ δὲ νοήμων οἶδεν ἐν τῷ ὀλισθάνειν αὐτόν.
8 A man who builds his house with other people's money
is like one who gathers stones for his burial mound.
 ὁ οἰκοδομῶν τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ ἐν χρήμασιν ἀλλοτρίοις
ὡς συνάγων αὐτοῦ τοὺς λίθους εἰς χειμῶνα.
9 An assembly of the wicked is like tow gathered together,
and their end is a flame of fire.
 στιππύον συνηγμένον συναγωγὴ ἀνόμων,
καὶ ἡ συντέλεια αὐτῶν φλὸξ πυρός.
10 The way of sinners is smoothly paved with stones,
but at its end is the pit of Hades.
 ὁδὸς ἁμαρτωλῶν ὡμαλισμένη ἐκ λίθων,
καὶ ἐπ' ἐσχάτων αὐτῆς βόθρος ᾅδου.
11 Whoever keeps the law controls his thoughts,
and wisdom is the fulfilment of the fear of the Lord.
Wisdom & foolishness. Sir.21.11-28Ὁ φυλάσσων νόμον κατακρατεῖ τοῦ ἐννοήματος αὐτοῦ,
καὶ συντέλεια τοῦ φόβου κυρίου σοφία.
12 He who is not clever cannot be taught,
but there is a cleverness which increases bitterness.
 οὐ παιδευθήσεται ὃς οὐκ ἔστιν πανοῦργος,
ἔστιν δὲ πανουργία πληθύνουσα πικρίαν.
13 The knowledge of a wise man will increase like a flood,
and his counsel like a flowing spring.
 γνῶσις σοφοῦ ὡς κατακλυσμὸς πληθυνθήσεται,
καὶ ἡ βουλὴ αὐτοῦ ὡς πηγὴ ζωῆς.
14 The mind of a fool is like a broken jar;
it will hold no knowledge.
 ἔγκατα μωροῦ ὡς ἀγγεῖον συντετριμμένον,
καὶ πᾶσαν γνῶσιν οὐ κρατήσει.
15 When a man of understanding hears a wise saying,
he will praise it and add to it;
when a reveler hears it, he dislikes it
and casts it behind his back.
 λόγον σοφὸν ἐὰν ἀκούσῃ ἐπιστήμων,
αἰνέσει αὐτὸν καὶ ἐπ' αὐτὸν προσθήσει·
ἤκουσεν ὁ σπαταλῶν, καὶ ἀπήρεσεν αὐτῷ,
καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν αὐτὸν ὀπίσω τοῦ νώτου αὐτοῦ.
16 A fool's narration is like a burden on a journey,
but delight will be found in the speech of the intelligent.
 ἐξήγησις μωροῦ ὡς ἐν ὁδῷ φορτίον,
ἐπὶ δὲ χείλους συνετοῦ εὑρεθήσεται χάρις.
17 The utterance of a sensible man will be sought in the assembly,
and they will ponder his words in their minds.
 στόμα φρονίμου ζητηθήσεται ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ,
καὶ τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ διανοηθήσονται ἐν καρδίᾳ.
18 Like a house that has vanished, so is wisdom to a fool;
and the knowledge of the ignorant is unexamined talk.
 Ὡς οἶκος ἠφανισμένος οὕτως μωρῷ σοφία,
καὶ γνῶσις ἀσυνέτου ἀδιεξέταστοι λόγοι.
19 To a senseless man education is fetters on his feet,
and like manacles on his right hand.
 πέδαι ἐν ποσὶν ἀνοήτου παιδεία,
καὶ ὡς χειροπέδαι ἐπὶ χειρὸς δεξιᾶς.
20 A fool raises his voice when he laughs,
but a clever man smiles quietly.
 μωρὸς ἐν γέλωτι ἀνυψοῖ φωνὴν αὐτοῦ,
ἀνὴρ δὲ πανοῦργος μόλις ἡσυχῇ μειδιάσει.
21 To a sensible man education is like a golden ornament,
and like a bracelet on the right arm.
 ὡς κόσμος χρυσοῦς φρονίμῳ παιδεία,
καὶ ὡς χλιδὼν ἐπὶ βραχίονι δεξιῷ.
22 The foot of a fool rushes into a house,
but a man of experience stands respectfully before it.
 ποὺς μωροῦ ταχὺς εἰς οἰκίαν,
ἄνθρωπος δὲ πολύπειρος αἰσχυνθήσεται ἀπὸ προσώπου.
23 A boor peers into the house from the door,
but a cultivated man remains outside.
 ἄφρων ἀπὸ θύρας παρακύπτει εἰς οἰκίαν, ἀνὴρ δὲ πεπαιδευμένος ἔξω στήσεται.
24 It is ill-mannered for a man to listen at a door,
and a discreet man is grieved by the disgrace.
 ἀπαιδευσία ἀνθρώπου ἀκροᾶσθαι παρὰ θύραν,
ὁ δὲ φρόνιμος βαρυνθήσεται ἀτιμίᾳ.
25 The lips of strangers will speak of these things,
but the words of the prudent will be weighed in the balance.
 χείλη ἀλλοτρίων ἐν τούτοις διηγήσονται,
λόγοι δὲ φρονίμων ἐν ζυγῷ σταθήσονται.
26 The mind of fools is in their mouth,
but the mouth of wise men is in their mind.
 ἐν στόματι μωρῶν ἡ καρδία αὐτῶν,
καρδία δὲ σοφῶν στόμα αὐτῶν.
27 When an ungodly man curses his adversary,
he curses his own soul.
 ἐν τῷ καταρᾶσθαι ἀσεβῆ τὸν σατανᾶν
αὐτὸς καταρᾶται τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν.
28 A whisperer defiles his own soul
and is hated in his neighbourhood.
 μολύνει τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ὁ ψιθυρίζων,
καὶ ἐν παροικήσει μισηθήσεται.

The katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE is a very light revision of the RSV. The changes are: (1) In places where 'the LORD', 'O LORD' occurs in the RSV, (it represents the tetragrammaton - YHWH - which is in the hebrew text), I have printed 'YHWH' in black. The later vowel sounds I have shown in the colour gray;
(2) I have removed the quotation marks and hyphens that were used in so many names in the RSV as an aid to correct pronunciation. This now brings it in line with all other English versions, and makes any word-search more accurate.
(3) I have changed all (I hope!) of the RSV archaic language sections to modern.

The katapi New Study Bible reference section displays links to parallel passages, and to direct quotations by New Testament authors to Old Testament passages. Quotations of OT passages by NT authors can in most cases be viewed within their context of the OT passage as a whole, with the quoted text displayed, against a subdued background.
