| 1 | Wisdom prospered their works by the hand of a holy prophet. | Wisdom led the Israelites through the desert. Wis.11.1-5 | Εὐόδωσεν τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ἐν χειρὶ προφήτου ἁγίου. | |
| 2 | They journeyed through an uninhabited wilderness, and pitched their tents in untrodden places. | διώδευσαν ἔρημον ἀοίκητον, καὶ ἐν ἀβάτοις ἔπηξαν σκηνάς· | ||
| 3 | They withstood their enemies and fought off their foes. | ἀντέστησαν πολεμίοις καὶ ἐχθροὺς ἠμύναντο. | ||
| 4 | When they thirsted they called upon you, and water was given them out of flinty rock, and slaking of thirst from hard stone. | ἐδίψησαν καὶ ἐπεκαλέσαντό σε, καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτοῖς ἐκ πέτρας ἀκροτόμου ὕδωρ, καὶ ἴαμα δίψης ἐκ λίθου σκληροῦ. | ||
| 5 | For through the very things by which their enemies were punished, they themselves received benefit in their need. | δι' ὧν γὰρ ἐκολάσθησαν οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν, | ||
| 6 | Instead of the fountain of an ever-flowing river, stirred up and defiled with blood | Punishment of the Egyptians. Wis.11.6-20 | ἀντὶ μὲν πηγῆς ἀενάου ποταμοῦ αἵματι λυθρώδει ταραχθέντος | |
| 7 | in rebuke for the decree to slay the infants, you gave them abundant water unexpectedly, | εἰς ἔλεγχον νηπιοκτόνου διατάγματος, ἔδωκας αὐτοῖς δαψιλὲς ὕδωρ ἀνελπίστως | ||
| 8 | showing by their thirst at that time how you punished their enemies. | δείξας διὰ τοῦ τότε δίψους πῶς τοὺς ὑπεναντίους ἐκόλασας. | ||
| 9 | For when they were tried, though they were weing disciplined in mercy, they learned how the ungodly were tormented when judged in wrath. | ὅτε γὰρ ἐπειράσθησαν, καίπερ ἐν ἐλέει παιδευόμενοι, ἔγνωσαν πῶς μετ' ὀργῆς κρινόμενοι ἀσεβεῖς ἐβασανίζοντο· | ||
| 10 | For you tested them as a father does in warning, but you examined the ungodly as a stern king does in condemnation. | τούτους μὲν γὰρ ὡς πατὴρ νουθετῶν ἐδοκίμασας, ἐκείνους δὲ ὡς ἀπότομος βασιλεὺς καταδικάζων ἐξήτασας. | ||
| 11 | Whether absent or present, they were equally distressed, | καὶ ἀπόντες δὲ καὶ παρόντες ὁμοίως ἐτρύχοντο· | ||
| 12 | for a twofold grief possessed them, and a groaning at the memory of what had occurred. | διπλῆ γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἔλαβεν λύπη καὶ στεναγμὸς μνημῶν τῶν παρελθόντων· | ||
| 13 | For when they heard that through their own punishments the righteous had received benefit, they perceived it was the Lord's doing. | ὅτε γὰρ ἤκουσαν διὰ τῶν ἰδίων κολάσεων εὐεργετημένους αὐτούς, ᾔσθοντο τοῦ κυρίου. | ||
| 14 | For though they had mockingly rejected him who long before had been cast out and exposed, at the end of the events they marveled at him, for their thirst was not like that of the righteous. | ὃν γὰρ ἐν ἐκθέσει πάλαι ῥιφέντα ἀπεῖπον χλευάζοντες· ἐπὶ τέλει τῶν ἐκβάσεων ἐθαύμασαν, οὐχ ὅμοια δικαίοις διψήσαντες. | ||
| 15 | In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts, which led them astray to worship irrational serpents and worthless animals, you sent upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them, | ἀντὶ δὲ λογισμῶν ἀσυνέτων ἀδικίας αὐτῶν, ἐν οἷς πλανηθέντες ἐθρήσκευον ἄλογα ἑρπετὰ καὶ κνώδαλα εὐτελῆ, ἐπαπέστειλας αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἀλόγων ζῴων εἰς ἐκδίκησιν, | ||
| 16 | that they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which he sins. | ἵνα γνῶσιν ὅτι, δι' ὧν τις ἁμαρτάνει, διὰ τούτων κολάζεται. | ||
| 17 | For your all-powerful hand, which created the world out of formless matter, did not lack the means to send upon them a multitude of bears, or bold lions, | οὐ γὰρ ἠπόρει ἡ παντοδύναμός σου χεὶρ καὶ κτίσασα τὸν κόσμον ἐξ ἀμόρφου ὕλης ἐπιπέμψαι αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἄρκων ἢ θρασεῖς λέοντας | ||
| 18 | or newly created unknown beasts full of rage, or such as breathe out fiery breath, or belch forth a thick pall of smoke, or flash terrible sparks from their eyes; | ἢ νεοκτίστους θυμοῦ πλήρεις θῆρας ἀγνώστους, ἤτοι πυρπνόον φυσῶντας ἄσθμα, ἢ βρόμον λικμωμένους καπνοῦ, ἢ δεινοὺς ἀπ' ὀμμάτων σπινθῆρας ἀστράπτοντας, | ||
| 19 | not only could their damage exterminate men, but the mere sight of them could kill by fright. | ὧν οὐ μόνον ἡ βλάβη ἠδύνατο συνεκτρῖψαι αὐτούς, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ ὄψις ἐκφοβήσασα διολέσαι. | ||
| 20 | Even apart from these, men could fall at a single breath when pursued by justice and scattered by the breath of your power. But you have arranged all things by measure and number and weight. | καὶ χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἑνὶ πνεύματι πεσεῖν ἐδύναντο ὑπὸ τῆς δίκης διωχθέντες, καὶ λικμηθέντες ὑπὸ πνεύματος δυνάμεώς σου· ἀλλὰ πάντα μέτρῳ καὶ ἀριθμῷ καὶ σταθμῷ διέταξας. | ||
| 21 | For it is always in your power to show great strength, and who can withstand the might of your arm? | God is powerful & merciful. Wis.11.21-12.2 | τὸ γὰρ μεγάλως ἰσχύειν σοι πάρεστιν πάντοτε, καὶ κράτει βραχίονός σου τίς ἀντιστήσεται; | |
| 22 | Because the whole world before you is like a speck that tips the scales, and like a drop of morning dew that falls upon the ground. | ὅτι ὡς ῥοπὴ ἐκ πλαστίγγων ὅλος ὁ κόσμος ἐναντίον σου, καὶ ὡς ῥανὶς δρόσου ὀρθρινὴ κατελθοῦσα ἐπὶ γῆν. | ||
| 23 | But you are merciful to all, for you can do all things, and you overlook men's sins, that they may repent. | ἐλεεῖς δὲ πάντας, ὅτι πάντα δύνασαι, καὶ παρορᾷς ἁμαρτήματα ἀνθρώπων εἰς μετάνοιαν. | ||
| 24 | For you love all things that exist, and have loathing for none of the things which you have made, for you would not have made anything if you had hated it. | ἀγαπᾷς γὰρ τὰ ὄντα πάντα καὶ οὐδὲν βδελύσσῃ ὧν ἐποίησας, οὐδὲ γὰρ ἂν μισῶν τι κατεσκεύασας. | ||
| 25 | How would anything have endured if you had not willed it? Or how would anything not called forth by you have been preserved? | πῶς δὲ διέμεινεν ἄν τι, εἰ μὴ σὺ ἠθέλησας, ἢ τὸ μὴ κληθὲν ὑπὸ σοῦ διετηρήθη; | ||
| 26 | You spare all things, for they are yours, O Lord who lovest the living. | φείδῃ δὲ πάντων, ὅτι σά ἐστιν, Δέσποτα φιλόψυχε· | ||
