katapi HOME The Healing of a Boy with a Demon - Mt.17.14-21  Mk.9.14-29  Lk.9.37-43     | NEB Books | notes

Matthew: 17
14When they returned to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, fell on his knees before him, 15and said, 'Have pity, sir, on my son: he is an epileptic and has bad fits, and he keeps falling about, often into the fire, often into water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.' 17Jesus answered, 'What an unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How much longer must I endure you? Bring him here to me.' 18Jesus then spoke sternly to the boy; the devil left him, and from that moment he was cured.
19Afterwards the disciples came to Jesus and asked him privately, 'Why could not we cast it out?' 20He answered, 'Your faith is too weak. I tell you this: if you have faith no bigger even than a mustard-seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there!", and it will move; nothing will prove impossible for you.' 21[Some manuscripts add: 'But there is no means of casting out this sort but prayer and fasting.']

Mark: 9
14When they came back to the disciples they saw a large crowd surrounding them and lawyers arguing is with them. 15As soon as they saw Jesus the whole crowd were overcome with awe, and they ran forward to welcome him. 16He asked them, 'What is this argument about?' 17A man in the crowd spoke up: 'Master, I brought my son to you. He is possessed by a spirit which makes him speechless. 18Whenever it attacks him, is it dashes him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and goes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they failed.' 19Jesus answered: 'What an unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How long must I endure you? Bring him to me.' 20So they brought the boy to him; and as soon as the spirit saw him it threw the boy into convulsions, and he fell on the ground and rolled about foaming at the mouth. 21Jesus asked his father, 'How long has he been like this?' 'From childhood,' 22he replied; 'often it has tried to make an end of him by throwing him into the fire or into water. But if it is at all possible for you, take pity upon us and help us.' 23'If it is possible!' said Jesus. 'Everything is possible to one who has faith.' 24'I have faith,' cried the boy's father; 'help me where faith falls short.' 25Jesus saw then that the crowd was closing in upon them, so he rebuked the unclean spirit. 'Deaf and dumb spirit.' he said, 'I command you, come out of him and never go back!' 26After crying aloud and racking him fiercely, it came out; and the boy looked like a corpse; in fact, many said, 'He is dead.' 27But Jesus took his hand and raised him to his feet, and he stood up.
28Then Jesus went indoors, and his disciples asked him privately, 'Why could not we cast it out?' 29He said, 'There is no means of casting out this sort but prayer.' [Some witnesses add: and fasting.]

Luke: 9
37Next day when they came down from the hills he was met by a large crowd. 38All at once there was a shout from a man in the crowd: 'Master, look at my son, I implore you, my only child. 39From time to time a spirit seizes him, gives a sudden scream, and throws him into convulsions with foaming at the mouth, and it keeps on mauling him and will hardly let him go. 40I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.' 41Jesus answered, 'What an unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you and endure you all? 42Bring your son here.' But before the boy could reach him the devil dashed him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, and gave him back to his father. (43a) And they were all struck with awe at the majesty of God. 43(43b) Amid the general wonder and admiration at all he was doing,

Notes: The most generally known harmonies of the Gospels are based upon the Huck-Lietzmann Synopsis (1936) of the three gospels and Sparks' Synopsis (1964) of four gospels. Many of the passages in these harmonies are too short to display in a useful manner on a web-page.
The katapi New Study Bible Synopsis of the Gospels is based upon the headings displayed in the New Study Bible reference table which in turn follows the headings printed in the United Bible Societies' New Testament in Greek. These sections are more useful for bible study. Columns are arranged so that the first column is your chosen heading from the bible passage list (highlighted). The harmonies that follow across the web-page are then in the normally accepted order.
For Old Testament references quoted by New Testament authors, you should either go back to the passage listing web-page and select the link on the 'version' column; or click on the column heading and search through the chapter for the relevant passage; than select the OT passage from the reference column.
