Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἠκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ, At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus;The Death of John the Baptist Mt.14.1-12 | Mk.6.14-29 | Lk.9.7-9
καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής· αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ. and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."
Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐδησεν [αὐτὸν] καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ· For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Hero'di-as, his brother Philip's wife;
ἐλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης αὐτῷ, Οὐκ ἐξεστίν σοι ἐχειν αὐτήν. because John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὀχλον, ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον. And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.
γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἠρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ, But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Hero'di-as danced before the company, and pleased Herod,
ὁθεν μεθ' ὁρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται. so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
καὶ λυπηθεὶς ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὁρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι, And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given;
καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ· he sent and had John beheaded in the prison,
καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ ἠνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς. and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.
