| 1 | Ὡς δὲ ἐκρίθη τοῦ ἀποπλεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν, παρεδίδουν τόν τε παῦλον καί τινας ἑτέρους δεσμώτας ἑκατοντάρχῃ ὀνόματι Ἰουλίῳ σπείρης Σεβαστῆς. |
And when it was decided that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort, named Julius. | Paul Sails for Rome Ac.27.1-12

| 2 | ἐπιβάντες δὲ πλοίῳ Ἀδραμυττηνῷ μέλλοντι πλεῖν εἰς τοὺς κατὰ τὴν Ἀσίαν τόπους ἀνήχθημεν, ὀντος σὺν ἡμῖν Ἀριστάρχου Μακεδόνος Θεσσαλονικέως· |
And embarking in a ship of Adramyt'tium, which was about to sail to the ports along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, accompanied by Aristar'chus, a Macedo'nian from Thessaloni'ca. |

| 3 | τῇ τε ἑτέρᾳ κατήχθημεν εἰς Σιδῶνα, φιλανθρώπως τε ὁ Ἰούλιος τῷ Παύλῳ χρησάμενος ἐπέτρεψεν πρὸς τοὺς φίλους πορευθέντι ἐπιμελείας τυχεῖν. |
The next day we put in at Sidon; and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for. |

| 4 | κἀκεῖθεν ἀναχθέντες ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν Κύπρον διὰ τὸ τοὺς ἀνέμους εἶναι ἐναντίους, |
And putting to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us. |
|
| 5 | τό τε πέλαγος τὸ κατὰ τὴν Κιλικίαν καὶ Παμφυλίαν διαπλεύσαντες κατήλθομεν εἰς Μύρα τῆς Λυκίας. |
And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cili'cia and Pamphyl'ia, we came to Myra in Ly'cia. |

| 6 | κἀκεῖ εὑρὼν ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης πλοῖον Ἀλεξανδρῖνον πλέον εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν ἐνεβίβασεν ἡμᾶς εἰς αὐτό. |
There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and put us on board. |

| 7 | ἐν ἱκαναῖς δὲ ἡμέραις βραδυπλοοῦντες καὶ μόλις γενόμενοι κατὰ τὴν Κνίδον, μὴ προσεῶντος ἡμᾶς τοῦ ἀνέμου, ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν Κρήτην κατὰ Σαλμώνην, |
We sailed slowly for a number of days, and arrived with difficulty off Cni'dus, and as the wind did not allow us to go on, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmo'ne. |

| 8 | μόλις τε παραλεγόμενοι αὐτὴν ἠλθομεν εἰς τόπον τινὰ καλούμενον Καλοὺς Λιμένας, ᾧ ἐγγὺς πόλις ἦν Λασαία. |
Coasting along it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lase'a. |

| 9 | Ἱκανοῦ δὲ χρόνου διαγενομένου καὶ ὀντος ἠδη ἐπισφαλοῦς τοῦ πλοὸς διὰ τὸ καὶ τὴν νηστείαν ἠδη παρεληλυθέναι, παρῄνει ὁ Παῦλος |
As much time had been lost, and the voyage was already dangerous because the fast had already gone by, Paul advised them, |

| 10 | λέγων αὐτοῖς, Ἄνδρες, θεωρῶ ὅτι μετὰ ὑβρεως καὶ πολλῆς ζημίας οὐ μόνον τοῦ φορτίου καὶ τοῦ πλοίου ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν μέλλειν ἐσεσθαι τὸν πλοῦν. |
saying, "Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives." |

| 11 | ὁ δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης τῷ κυβερνήτῃ καὶ τῷ ναυκλήρῳ μᾶλλον ἐπείθετο ἢ τοῖς ὑπὸ Παύλου λεγομένοις. |
But the centurion paid more attention to the captain and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said. |

| 12 | ἀνευθέτου δὲ τοῦ λιμένος ὑπάρχοντος πρὸς παραχειμασίαν οἱ πλείονες ἐθεντο βουλὴν ἀναχθῆναι ἐκεῖθεν, εἰ πως δύναιντο καταντήσαντες εἰς Φοίνικα παραχειμάσαι, λιμένα τῆς Κρήτης βλέποντα κατὰ λίβα καὶ κατὰ χῶρον. |
And because the harbour was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to put to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbour of Crete, looking northeast and southeast, and winter there. |

| 13 | Ὑποπνεύσαντος δὲ νότου δόξαντες τῆς προθέσεως κεκρατηκέναι, ἀραντες ἆσσον παρελέγοντο τὴν Κρήτην. |
And when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close inshore. | The Storm at Sea Ac.27.13-38

| 14 | μετ' οὐ πολὺ δὲ ἐβαλεν κατ' αὐτῆς ἀνεμος τυφωνικὸς ὁ καλούμενος Εὐρακύλων· |
But soon a tempestuous wind, called the northeaster, struck down from the land; |
|
| 15 | συναρπασθέντος δὲ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ μὴ δυναμένου ἀντοφθαλμεῖν τῷ ἀνέμῳ ἐπιδόντες ἐφερόμεθα. |
and when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven. |

| 16 | νησίον δέ τι ὑποδραμόντες καλούμενον Καῦδα ἰσχύσαμεν μόλις περικρατεῖς γενέσθαι τῆς σκάφης, |
And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we managed with difficulty to secure the boat; |
|
| 17 | ἣν ἀραντες βοηθείαις ἐχρῶντο ὑποζωννύντες τὸ πλοῖον· φοβούμενοί τε μὴ εἰς τὴν Σύρτιν ἐκπέσωσιν, χαλάσαντες τὸ σκεῦος, οὑτως ἐφέροντο. |
after hoisting it up, they took measures to undergird the ship; then, fearing that they should run on the Syr'tis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven. |

| 18 | σφοδρῶς δὲ χειμαζομένων ἡμῶν τῇ ἑξῆς ἐκβολὴν ἐποιοῦντο, |
As we were violently storm-tossed, they began next day to throw the cargo overboard; |
|
| 19 | καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ αὐτόχειρες τὴν σκευὴν τοῦ πλοίου ἐρριψαν. |
and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackle of the ship. |
|
| 20 | μήτε δὲ ἡλίου μήτε ἀστρων ἐπιφαινόντων ἐπὶ πλείονας ἡμέρας, χειμῶνός τε οὐκ ὀλίγου ἐπικειμένου, λοιπὸν περιῃρεῖτο ἐλπὶς πᾶσα τοῦ σῴζεσθαι ἡμᾶς. |
And when neither sun nor stars appeared for many a day, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned. |

| 21 | Πολλῆς τε ἀσιτίας ὑπαρχούσης τότε σταθεὶς ὁ Παῦλος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν εἶπεν, Ἔδει μέν, ὦ ἀνδρες, πειθαρχήσαντάς μοι μὴ ἀνάγεσθαι ἀπὸ τῆς Κρήτης κερδῆσαί τε τὴν ὑβριν ταύτ ην καὶ τὴν ζημίαν. |
As they had been long without food, Paul then came forward among them and said, "Men, you should have listened to me, and should not have set sail from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. |

| 22 | καὶ τὰ νῦν παραινῶ ὑμᾶς εὐθυμεῖν, ἀποβολὴ γὰρ ψυχῆς οὐδεμία ἐσται ἐξ ὑμῶν πλὴν τοῦ πλοίου· |
I now bid you take heart; for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. |

| 23 | παρέστη γάρ μοι ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τοῦ θεοῦ οὗ εἰμι [ἐγώ], ᾧ καὶ λατρεύω, ἀγγελος |
For this very night there stood by me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, |
|
| 24 | λέγων, Μὴ φοβοῦ, Παῦλε· Καίσαρί σε δεῖ παραστῆναι, καὶ ἰδοὺ κεχάρισταί σοι ὁ θεὸς πάντας τοὺς πλέοντας μετὰ σοῦ. |
and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar; and lo, God has granted you all those who sail with you.' |

| 25 | διὸ εὐθυμεῖτε, ἀνδρες· πιστεύω γὰρ τῷ θεῷ ὅτι οὑτως ἐσται καθ' ὃν τρόπον λελάληταί μοι. |
So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. |
|
| 26 | εἰς νῆσον δέ τινα δεῖ ἡμᾶς ἐκπεσεῖν. |
But we shall have to run on some island." |
|
| 27 | Ὡς δὲ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτη νὺξ ἐγένετο διαφερομένων ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ Ἀδρίᾳ, κατὰ μέσον τῆς νυκτὸς ὑπενόουν οἱ ναῦται προσάγειν τινὰ αὐτοῖς χώραν. |
When the fourteenth night had come, as we were drifting across the sea of A'dria, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land. |

| 28 | καὶ βολίσαντες εὗρον ὀργυιὰς εἰκοσι, βραχὺ δὲ διαστήσαντες καὶ πάλιν βολίσαντες εὗρον ὀργυιὰς δεκαπέντε· |
So they sounded and found twenty fathoms; a little farther on they sounded again and found fifteen fathoms. |

| 29 | φοβούμενοί τε μή που κατὰ τραχεῖς τόπους ἐκπέσωμεν, ἐκ πρύμνης ῥίψαντες ἀγκύρας τέσσαρας ηὐχοντο ἡμέραν γενέσθαι. |
And fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let out four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come. |

| 30 | τῶν δὲ ναυτῶν ζητούντων φυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ χαλασάντων τὴν σκάφην εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν προφάσει ὡς ἐκ πρῴρης ἀγκύρας μελλόντων ἐκτείνειν, |
And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under pretence of laying out anchors from the bow, |

| 31 | εἶπεν ὁ Παῦλος τῷ ἑκατοντάρχῃ καὶ τοῖς στρατιώταις, Ἐὰν μὴ οὗτοι μείνωσιν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ, ὑμεῖς σωθῆναι οὐ δύνασθε. |
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved." |
|
| 32 | τότε ἀπέκοψαν οἱ στρατιῶται τὰ σχοινία τῆς σκάφης καὶ εἰασαν αὐτὴν ἐκπεσεῖν. |
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let it go. |
|
| 33 | Ἄχρι δὲ οὗ ἡμέρα ἠμελλεν γίνεσθαι παρεκάλει ὁ Παῦλος ἀπαντας μεταλαβεῖν τροφῆς λέγων, Τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην σήμερον ἡμέραν προσδοκῶντες ἀσιτοι διατελεῖτε, μηθὲν προσλαβόμενοι· |
As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing. |

| 34 | διὸ παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς μεταλαβεῖν τροφῆς, τοῦτο γὰρ πρὸς τῆς ὑμετέρας σωτηρίας ὑπάρχει· οὐδενὸς γὰρ ὑμῶν θρὶξ ἀπὸ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἀπολεῖται. |
Therefore I urge you to take some food; it will give you strength, since not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you." |

| 35 | εἰπας δὲ ταῦτα καὶ λαβὼν ἀρτον εὐχαρίστησεν τῷ θεῷ ἐνώπιον πάντων καὶ κλάσας ἠρξατο ἐσθίειν. |
And when he had said this, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat. |
|
| 36 | εὐθυμοι δὲ γενόμενοι πάντες καὶ αὐτοὶ προσελάβοντο τροφῆς. |
Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves. |
|
| 37 | ἠμεθα δὲ αἱ πᾶσαι ψυχαὶ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ διακόσιαι ἑβδομήκοντα ἑξ. |
(We were in all two hundred and seventy-six persons in the ship.) |
|
| 38 | κορεσθέντες δὲ τροφῆς ἐκούφιζον τὸ πλοῖον ἐκβαλλόμενοι τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν. |
And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea. |
|
| 39 | Ὅτε δὲ ἡμέρα ἐγένετο, τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἐπεγίνωσκον, κόλπον δέ τινα κατενόουν ἐχοντα αἰγιαλὸν εἰς ὃν ἐβουλεύοντο εἰ δύναιντο ἐξῶσαι τὸ πλοῖον. |
Now when it was day, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, on which they planned if possible to bring the ship ashore. | The Shipwreck Ac.27.39-44

| 40 | καὶ τὰς ἀγκύρας περιελόντες εἰων εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, ἀμα ἀνέντες τὰς ζευκτηρίας τῶν πηδαλίων, καὶ ἐπάραντες τὸν ἀρτέμωνα τῇ πνεούσῃ κατεῖχον εἰς τὸν αἰγιαλόν. |
So they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that tied the rudders; then hoisting the foresail to the wind they made for the beach. |
|
| 41 | περιπεσόντες δὲ εἰς τόπον διθάλασσον ἐπέκειλαν τὴν ναῦν, καὶ ἡ μὲν πρῷρα ἐρείσασα ἐμεινεν ἀσάλευτος, ἡ δὲ πρύμνα ἐλύετο ὑπὸ τῆς βίας [τῶν κυμάτων]. |
But striking a shoal they ran the vessel aground; the bow stuck and remained immovable, and the stern was broken up by the surf. |

| 42 | τῶν δὲ στρατιωτῶν βουλὴ ἐγένετο ἵνα τοὺς δεσμώτας ἀποκτείνωσιν, μή τις ἐκκολυμβήσας διαφύγῃ· |
The soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any should swim away and escape; |

| 43 | ὁ δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης βουλόμενος διασῶσαι τὸν Παῦλον ἐκώλυσεν αὐτοὺς τοῦ βουλήματος, ἐκέλευσέν τε τοὺς δυναμένους κολυμβᾶν ἀπορίψαντας πρώτους ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐξιέναι, |
but the centurion, wishing to save Paul, kept them from carrying out their purpose. He ordered those who could swim to throw themselves overboard first and make for the land, |

| 44 | καὶ τοὺς λοιποὺς οὓς μὲν ἐπὶ σανίσιν οὓς δὲ ἐπί τινων τῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου· καὶ οὑτως ἐγένετο πάντας διασωθῆναι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν. |
and the rest on planks or on pieces of the ship. And so it was that all escaped to land. |
