'I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. | |
| 3 | καὶ ἐὰν ἀπολύσω αὐτοὺς νήστεις εἰς οἶκον αὐτῶν, ἐκλυθήσονται ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ· καί τινες αὐτῶν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἡκασιν. |
If I send them home unfed, they will turn faint on the way; some of them have come from a distance.' | |
| 4 | καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι Πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἀρτων ἐπ' ἐρημίας; |
The disciples answered, 'How can anyone provide all these people with bread in this lonely place?' | |
| 5 | καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτούς, Πόσους ἐχετε ἀρτους; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, Ἑπτά. |
'How many loaves have you?' he asked; and they answered, 'Seven.' | |
| 6 | καὶ παραγγέλλει τῷ ὀχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἀρτους εὐχαριστήσας ἐκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα παρατιθῶσιν καὶ παρέθηκαν τῷ ὀχλῳ. |
So he ordered the people to sit down on the ground; then he took the seven loaves, and, after giving thanks to God, he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples to distribute; and they served it out to the people. | |
| 7 | καὶ εἶχον ἰχθύδια ὀλίγα· καὶ εὐλογήσας αὐτὰ εἶπεν καὶ ταῦτα παρατιθέναι. |
They had also a few small fishes, which she blessed and ordered them to distribute. | |
| 8 | καὶ ἐφαγον καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν, καὶ ἦραν περισσεύματα κλασμάτων ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας. |
They all ate to their hearts' content, and seven baskets were filled with the scraps that were left. | |
| 9 | ἦσαν δὲ ὡς τετρακισχίλιοι. καὶ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτούς. |
The people numbered about four thousand. | |
| 10 | Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Δαλμανουθά. |
Then he dismissed them; and, without delay, got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
