15 ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ Matthew Reference
1Τότε προσέρχονται τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες, THEN JESUS WAS APPROACHED by a group of Pharisees and lawyers from Jerusalem, with the question:The Tradition of the Elders Mt.15.1-20 | Mk.7.1-23
2Διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων; οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν ὁταν ἀρτον ἐσθίωσιν. 'Why do your disciples break the old-established tradition? They do not wash their hands before meals.' 
3ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν; He answered them: 'And what of you? Why do you break God's commandment in the interest of your tradition? 
4ὁ γὰρ θεὸς εἶπεν, τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα, καὶ ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω· For God said, "Honour your father and mother", and, "The man who curses his father or mother must suffer death."- Honour your father and your mother Mt.15.4 | Ex.20.12 | Dt.5.16 | Ex.21.17
5ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε, Ὃς ἂν εἰπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί, Δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς, But you say, "If a man says to his father or mother, 'Anything of mine which might have been used for your benefit is set apart for God', then he must not honour his father or his mother." 
6οὐ μὴ τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν. You have made God's law null and void out of respect for your tradition. 
7ὑποκριταί, καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων, What hypocrisy! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 
8Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ,
ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ' ἐμοῦ·
 "This people pays me lip-service,
but their heart is far from me;
- This people honours me with their lips Mt.15.8-9 | Is.29.13
9μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με,
διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων. 		their worship of me is in vain,
for they teach as doctrines the commandments of men." '		 
10Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὀχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε· He called the crowd and said to them, 'Listen to me, and understand this: 
11οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. a man is not defiled by what goes into his mouth, but by what comes out of it.'
 
12Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν; Then the disciples came to him and said, 'Do you know that the Pharisees have taken great offence at what you have been saying?' 
13ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, Πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται. His answer was: 'Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father's planting will be rooted up. 
14ἀφετε αὐτούς· τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί [τυφλῶν]· τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ, ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.'
 
15Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολήν [ταύτην]. Then Peter said, 'Tell us what that parable means.' 
16ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστὲ; Jesus answered, 'Are you still as dull as the rest? 
17οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεταὶ; Do you not see that whatever goes in by the mouth passes into the stomach and so is discharged into the drain? 
18τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται, κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. But what comes out of the mouth has its origins in the heart; and that is what defiles a man. 
19ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, ψευδομαρτυρίαι, βλασφημίαι. Wicked thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander - these all proceed from the heart; 
20ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον, τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον. and these are the things that defile a man; but to eat without first washing his hands, that cannot defile him.'
