ΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ

1Οὗτος γὰρ Mελχισέδεκ, βασιλεὺς Σαλήμ, ἱερεὺς τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου,συναντήσας Ἀβραὰμ ὑποστρέφοντι ἀπὸ τῆς κοπῆς τῶν βασιλέων καὶ εὐλογήσας αὐτόν, THIS MELCHIZEDEK, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, met Abraham returning from the rout of the kings and blessed him;The Priestly Order of Melchizedek Hb.7.1-28
2ᾧ καὶ δεκάτην ἀπὸ πάντων ἐμέρισεν Ἀβραάμ, πρῶτον μὲν ἑρμηνευόμενος βασιλεὺς δικαιοσύνης ἐπειτα δὲ καὶ βασιλεὺς Σαλήμ, ὁ ἐστιν βασιλεὺς εἰρήνης, and Abraham gave him a tithe of everything as his portion. His name, in the first place, means 'king of righteousness'; next he is king of Salem, that is, 'king of peace'. 
3ἀπάτωρ, ἀμήτωρ, ἀγενεαλόγητος, μήτε ἀρχὴν ἡμερῶν μήτε ζωῆς τέλος ἐχων, ἀφωμοιωμένος δὲ τῷ υἱῷ τοῦ θεοῦ, μένει ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸ διηνεκές. He has no father, no mother, no lineage; his years have no beginning, his life no end. He is like the Son of God: he remains a priest for all time.
 
4Θεωρεῖτε δὲ πηλίκος οὗτος ᾧ δεκάτην Ἀβραὰμ ἐδωκεν ἐκ τῶν ἀκροθινίων ὁ πατριάρχης. Consider now how great he must be for Abraham the patriarch to give him a tithe of the finest of the spoil. 
5καὶ οἱ μὲν ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Λευὶ τὴν ἱερατείαν λαμβάνοντες ἐντολὴν ἐχουσιν ἀποδεκατοῦν τὸν λαὸν κατὰ τὸν νόμον, τοῦτ' ἐστιν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν, καίπερ ἐξεληλυθότας ἐκ τῆς ὀσφύος Ἀβραάμ· The descendants of Levi who take the priestly office are commanded by the Law to tithe the people, that is, their kinsmen, although they too are descendants of Abraham. 
6ὁ δὲ μὴ γενεαλογούμενος ἐξ αὐτῶν δεδεκάτωκεν Ἀβραάμ, καὶ τὸν ἐχοντα τὰς ἐπαγγελίας εὐλόγηκεν. But Melchizedek, though he does not trace his descent from them, has tithed Abraham himself, and given his blessing to the man who received the promises; 
7χωρὶς δὲ πάσης ἀντιλογίας τὸ ἐλαττον ὑπὸ τοῦ κρείττονος εὐλογεῖται. and beyond all dispute the lesser is always blessed by the greater. 
8καὶ ὧδε μὲν δεκάτας ἀποθνῄσκοντες ἄνθρωποι λαμβάνουσιν, ἐκεῖ δὲ μαρτυρούμενος ὅτι ζῇ. Again, in the one instance tithes are received by men who must die; but in the other, by one whom Scripture affirms to be alive. 
9καὶ ὡς ἐπος εἰπεῖν, δῖ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Λευὶ ὁ δεκάτας λαμβάνων δεδεκάτωται, It might even be said that Levi, who receives tithes, has himself been tithed through Abraham; 
10ἐτι γὰρ ἐν τῇ ὀσφύϊ τοῦ πατρὸς ἦν ὅτε συνήντησεν αὐτῷ Μελχισέδεκ. for he was still in his ancestor's loins when Melchizedek met him.
 
11Εἰ μὲν οὖν τελείωσις διὰ τῆς Λευιτικῆς ἱερωσύνης ἦν, ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἐπ' αὐτῆς νενομοθέτηται, τίς ἐτι χρεία κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ ἑτερον ἀνίστασθαι ἱερέα καὶ οὐ κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Ἀαρὼν λέγεσθαὶ; Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for it is on this basis that the people were given the Law), what further need would there have been to speak of another priest arising, in the succession of Melchizedek, instead of the succession of Aaron? 
12μετατιθεμένης γὰρ τῆς ἱερωσύνης ἐξ ἀνάγκης καὶ νόμου μετάθεσις γίνεται. For a change of priesthood must mean a change of law. 
13ἐφ' ὃν γὰρ λέγεται ταῦτα φυλῆς ἑτέρας μετέσχηκεν, ἀφ' ἧς οὐδεὶς προσέσχηκεν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ· And the One here spoken of belongs to a different tribe, no member of which has ever had anything to do with the altar. 
14πρόδηλον γὰρ ὅτι ἐξ Ἰούδα ἀνατέταλκεν ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν, εἰς ἣν φυλὴν περὶ ἱερέων οὐδὲν Μωϋσῆς ἐλάλησεν. For it is very evident that our Lord is sprung from Judah, a tribe to which Moses made no reference in speaking of priests.
 
15καὶ περισσότερον ἐτι κατάδηλόν ἐστιν, εἰ κατὰ τὴν ὁμοιότητα Mελχισέδεκ ἀνίσταται ἱερεὺς ἑτερος, The argument becomes still clearer, if the new priest who arises is one like Melchizedek, 
16ὃς οὐ κατὰ νόμον ἐντολῆς σαρκίνης γέγονεν ἀλλὰ κατὰ δύναμιν ζωῆς ἀκαταλύτου, owing his priesthood not to a system of earth-bound rules but to the power of a life that cannot be destroyed. 
17μαρτυρεῖται γὰρ ὅτι

Σὺ ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ.

For here is the testimony: 'Thou art a priest for ever, in the succession of Melchizedek.' - Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchiz'edek. Hb.7.17 | Ps.110.4
18ἀθέτησις μὲν γὰρ γίνεται προαγούσης ἐντολῆς διὰ τὸ αὐτῆς ἀσθενὲς καὶ ἀνωφελές, The earlier rules are cancelled as impotent and useless, 
19οὐδὲν γὰρ ἐτελείωσεν ὁ νόμος, ἐπεισαγωγὴ δὲ κρείττονος ἐλπίδος, δῖ ἧς ἐγγίζομεν τῷ θεῷ. since the Law brought nothing to perfection; and a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
 
20Καὶ καθ' ὁσον οὐ χωρὶς ὁρκωμοσίας, οἱ μὲν γὰρ χωρὶς ὁρκωμοσίας εἰσὶν ἱερεῖς γεγονότες, How great a difference it makes that an oath was sworn! 
21ὁ δὲ μετὰ ὁρκωμοσίας διὰ τοῦ λέγοντος πρὸς αὐτόν,

Ὤμοσεν κύριος, καὶ οὐ μεταμεληθήσεται,
Σὺ ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,

There was no oath sworn when those others were made priests; but for this priest an oath was sworn, as Scripture says of him: 'The Lord has sworn and will not go back on his word, "Thou art a priest for ever." ' - The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind Hb.7.21 | Ps.110.4
22κατὰ τοσοῦτο καὶ κρείττονος διαθήκης γέγονεν ἐγγυος Ἰησοῦς. How far superior must the covenant also be of which Jesus is the guarantor! 
23καὶ οἱ μὲν πλείονές εἰσιν γεγονότες ἱερεῖς διὰ τὸ θανάτῳ κωλύεσθαι παραμένειν· Those other priests are appointed in numerous succession, because they are prevented by death from continuing in office; 
24ὁ δὲ διὰ τὸ μένειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀπαράβατον ἐχει τὴν ἱερωσύνην· but the priesthood which Jesus holds is perpetual, because he remains for ever. 
25ὁθεν καὶ σῴζειν εἰς τὸ παντελὲς δύναται τοὺς προσερχομένους δῖ αὐτοῦ τῷ θεῷ, πάντοτε ζῶν εἰς τὸ ἐντυγχάνειν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν. That is why he is also able to save absolutely those who approach God through him; he is always living to plead on their behalf.
 
26Τοιοῦτος γὰρ ἡμῖν καὶ ἐπρεπεν ἀρχιερεύς, ὁσιος, ἀκακος, ἀμίαντος, κεχωρισμένος ἀπὸ τῶν ἀμαρτωλῶν, καὶ ὑψηλότερος τῶν οὐρανῶν γενόμενος· Such a high priest does indeed fit our condition - devout, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, raised high above the heavens. 
27ὃς οὐκ ἐχει καθ' ἡμέραν ἀνάγκην, ὡσπερ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς, πρότερον ὑπὲρ τῶν ἰδίων ἀμαρτιῶν θυσίας ἀναφέρειν, ἐπειτα τῶν τοῦ λαοῦ· τοῦτο γὰρ ἐποίησεν ἐφάπαξ ἑαυτὸν ἀνενέ γκας. He has no need to offer sacrifices daily, as the high priests do, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; for this he did once and for all when he offered up himself. 
28ὁ νόμος γὰρ ἀνθρώπους καθίστησιν ἀρχιερεῖς ἐχοντας ἀσθένειαν, ὁ λόγος δὲ τῆς ὁρκωμοσίας τῆς μετὰ τὸν νόμον υἱὸν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τετελειωμένον. The high priests made by the Law are men in all their frailty; but the priest appointed by the words of the oath which supersedes the Law is the Son, made perfect now for ever.
