How blest are those of a gentle spirit; they shall have the earth for their possession. | |

| 11 | μακάριοί ἐστε ὁταν ὀνειδίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ διώξωσιν καὶ εἰπωσιν πᾶν πονηρὸν καθ' ὑμῶν [ψευδόμενοι] ἑνεκεν ἐμοῦ· | 'How blest you are, when you suffer insults and persecution and every kind of calumny for my sake. | |
| 12 | χαίρετε καὶ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὅτι ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς· οὑτως γὰρ ἐδίωξαν τοὺς προφήτας τοὺς πρὸ ὑμῶν. | Accept it with gladness and exultation, for you have a rich reward in heaven; in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.' | |

| 14 | Ὑμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου. οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὀρους κειμένη· | You are light for all the world. A town that stands on a hill cannot be hidden. | |
| 15 | οὐδὲ καίουσιν λύχνον καὶ τιθέασιν αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον ἀλλ' ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν, καὶ λάμπει πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ. | When a lamp is lit, it is not put under the meal-tub, but on the lamp-stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. | |
| 16 | οὑτως λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἐμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὁπως ἰδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἐργα καὶ δοξάσωσιν τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. | And you, like the lamp, must shed light among your fellows, so that, when they see the good you do, they may give praise to your Father in heaven. | |
| 17 | Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον καταλῦσαι τὸν νόμον ἢ τοὺς προφήτας· οὐκ ἦλθον καταλῦσαι ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι. | DO NOT SUPPOSE that I have come to abolish the Law and the prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to complete. | Teaching about the Law Mt.5.17-20 |
| 18 | ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν, ἑως ἂν παρέλθῃ ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ, ἰῶτα ἓν ἢ μία κεραία οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου ἑως ἂν πάντα γένηται. | I tell you this: so long as heaven and is earth endure, not a letter, not a stroke, will disappear from the Law until all that must happen has happened. | |
| 19 | ὃς ἐὰν οὖν λύσῃ μίαν τῶν ἐντολῶν τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων καὶ διδάξῃ οὑτως τοὺς ἀνθρώπους, ἐλάχιστος κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν· ὃς δ' ἂν ποιήσῃ καὶ διδά ξῃ, οὗτος μέγας κληθήσεται ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν. | If any man therefore sets aside even the least of the Law's demands, and teaches others to do the same, he will have the lowest place in the kingdom of Heaven, whereas anyone who keeps the Law and teaches others so will stand high in the kingdom of Heaven. | |
| 20 | λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ περισσεύσῃ ὑμῶν ἡ δικαιοσύνη πλεῖον τῶν γραμματέων καὶ Φαρισαίων, οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν. | I tell you, unless you show yourselves far better men than the Pharisees and the doctors of the law, you can never enter the kingdom of Heaven. | |
| 21 | Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις, Οὐ φονεύσεις· ὃς δ' ἂν φονεύσῃ, ἐνοχος ἐσται τῇ κρίσει. | You have learned that our forefathers were told, "Do not commit murder; anyone who commits murder must be brought to judgement." | Teaching about Anger Mt.5.21-26 |
| 22 | ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ ἐνοχος ἐσται τῇ κρίσει· ὃς δ' ἂν εἰπῃ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ, Ῥακά, ἐνοχος ἐσται τῷ συνεδρίῳ· ὃς δ' ἂ ν εἰπῃ, Μωρέ, ἐνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός. | But what I tell you is this: Anyone who nurses anger against his brother must be brought to judgement. If he abuses his brother he must answer for it to the court; if he sneers at him he will have to answer for it in the fires of hell.' | |
| 23 | ἐὰν οὖν προσφέρῃς τὸ δῶρόν σου ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον κἀκεῖ μνησθῇς ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἐχει τι κατὰ σοῦ, | If, when you are bringing your gift to the altar, you suddenly remember that your brother has a grievance against you, | |
| 24 | ἀφες ἐκεῖ τὸ δῶρόν σου ἐμπροσθεν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου, καὶ ὑπαγε πρῶτον διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, καὶ τότε ἐλθὼν πρόσφερε τὸ δῶρόν σου. | leave your gift where it is before the altar. First go and make your peace with your brother, and only then come back and offer your gift. | |
| 25 | ἰσθι εὐνοῶν τῷ ἀντιδίκῳ σου ταχὺ ἑως ὁτου εἶ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, μήποτέ σε παραδῷ ὁ ἀντίδικος τῷ κριτῇ, καὶ ὁ κριτὴς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ, καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν βληθήσῃ· | 'If someone sues you, come to terms with him promptly while you are both on your way to court; otherwise he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the constable, and you will be put in jail. | |
| 26 | ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκεῖθεν ἑως ἂν ἀποδῷς τὸν ἐσχατον κοδράντην. | I tell you, once you are there you will not be let out till you have paid the last farthing. | |
| 27 | Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη, Οὐ μοιχεύσεις. | 'You have learned that they were told, "Do not commit adultery." | Teaching about Adultery Mt.5.27-30 |
| 28 | ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ βλέπων γυναῖκα πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὴν ἠδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ. | But what I tell you is this: If a man looks on a woman with a lustful eye he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. | |
| 29 | εἰ δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ὁ δεξιὸς σκανδαλίζει σε, ἐξελε αὐτὸν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ· συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὁλον τὸ σῶμά σου βληθῇ εἰς γέενναν. | 'If your right eye leads you astray, tear it out and fling it away; it is better for you to lose one part of your body than for the whole of it to be thrown into hell. | |
| 30 | καὶ εἰ ἡ δεξιά σου χεὶρ σκανδαλίζει σε, ἐκκοψον αὐτὴν καὶ βάλε ἀπὸ σοῦ· συμφέρει γάρ σοι ἵνα ἀπόληται ἓν τῶν μελῶν σου καὶ μὴ ὁλον τὸ σῶμά σου εἰς γέενναν ἀπέλθῃ. | And if your right hand is your undoing, cut it off and fling it away; it is better for you to lose one part of your body than for the whole of it to go to hell. | |

| 32 | ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ἀπολύων τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ παρεκτὸς λόγου πορνείας ποιεῖ αὐτὴν μοιχευθῆναι, καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἀπολελυμένην γαμήσῃ μοιχᾶται. | But what I tell you is this: If a man divorces his wife for any cause other than unchastity he involves her in adultery; and anyone who marries a woman so divorced commits adultery. | |

| 35 | μήτε ἐν ὑποπόδιόν ἐστιν τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ· μήτε εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα, ὅτι πόλις ἐστὶν τοῦ μεγάλου βασιλέως· | nor by earth, for it is his footstool, nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King, | |
| 36 | μήτε ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ σου ὀμόσῃς, ὅτι οὐ δύνασαι μίαν τρίχα λευκὴν ποιῆσαι ἢ μέλαιναν. | nor by your own head, because you cannot turn one hair of it white or black. | |
| 37 | ἐστω δὲ ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν ναὶ ναί, οὒ οὐ· τὸ δὲ περισσὸν τούτων ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἐστιν. | Plain "Yes" or "No" is all you need to say; anything beyond that comes from the devil. | |

| 39 | ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ἀντιστῆναι τῷ πονηρῷ· ἀλλ' ὁστις σε ῥαπίζει εἰς τὴν δεξιὰν σιαγόνα [σου], στρέψον αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἀλλην· | But what I tell you is this: Do not set yourself against the man who wrongs you. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn and offer him your left. | |
| 40 | καὶ τῷ θέλοντί σοι κριθῆναι καὶ τὸν χιτῶνά σου λαβεῖν, ἀφες αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱμάτιον· | If a man wants to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well. | |
| 41 | καὶ ὁστις σε ἀγγαρεύσει μίλιον ἑν, ὑπαγε μετ' αὐτοῦ δύο. | If a man in authority makes you go one mile, go with him two. | |

| 46 | ἐὰν γὰρ ἀγαπήσητε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, τίνα μισθὸν ἐχετὲ; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ τελῶναι τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν; | If you love only those who love you, what reward can you expect? Surely the tax-gatherers do as much as that. | |
| 47 | καὶ ἐὰν ἀσπάσησθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν μόνον, τί περισσὸν ποιεῖτὲ; οὐχὶ καὶ οἱ ἐθνικοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν; | And if you greet only your brothers, what is there extraordinary about that? Even the heathen do as much. | |
| 48 | Ἐσεσθε οὖν ὑμεῖς τέλειοι ὡς ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τέλειός ἐστιν. | You must therefore be all goodness, just as your heavenly Father is all good. | |
