18ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΩΝ Α Brenton(Lxx) 1 KINGDOMS Revised Standard Version LIBER SAMUHELIS I 18

6 Καὶ ἐξῆλθον αἱ χορεύουσαι εἰς συνάντησιν Δαυιδ ἐκ πασῶν πόλεων Ισραηλ ἐν τυμπάνοις καὶ ἐν χαρμοσύνῃ καὶ ἐν κυμβάλοις, And there came out women in dances to meet David out of all the cities of Israel with timbrels and with rejoicing and with cymbals. Saul's resentment. 1Sm.18.6-16 As they were coming home, when David returned from slaying the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with timbrels, with songs of joy, and with instruments of music.
And the women began [the strain] and said Saul has smitten his thousands and David his ten thousands.   And the women sang to one another as they made merry,
"Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his ten thousands."
And it seemed evil in the eyes of Saul concerning this matter and he said To David they have given ten thousands and to me they have given thousands.   And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him; he said, "They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands; and what more can he have but the kingdom?"
And Saul eyed David from that day on.
12 καὶ ἐφοβήθη Σαουλ ἀπὸ προσώπου Δαυιδ And Saul was alarmed on account of David.   Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.
And he removed him from him and made him a captain of a thousand for himself; and he went out and came in before the people.   So Saul removed him from his presence, and made him a commander of a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
And David was prudent in all his ways and the Lord was with him.   And David had success in all his undertakings; for the LORD was with him.
And Saul saw that he was very wise and he was afraid of him.   And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him.
And all Israel and Juda loved David because he came in and went out before the people.   But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.
And Melchol the daughter of Saul loved David; and it was told Saul and the thing was pleasing in his eyes.   Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
καὶ ἦν ἐπὶ Σαουλ χεὶρ ἀλλοφύλων· And Saul said I will give her to him and she shall be a stumbling-block to him. Now the hand of the Philistines was against Saul.   Saul thought, "Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Therefore Saul said to David a second time, "You shall now be my son-in-law."
And Saul charged his servants saying Speak ye privately to David saying Behold   And Saul commanded his servants, "Speak to David in private and say, 'Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you; now then become the king's son-in-law.'"
And the servants of Saul spoke these words in the ears of David; and David said [Is it] a light thing in your eyes to become son-in-law to the king? Whereas I [am] an humble man an not honourable?   And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, "Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and of no repute?"
And the servants of Saul reported to him according to these words which David spoke.   And the servants of Saul told him, "Thus and so did David speak."
And Saul said Thus shall ye speak to David The king wants no gift but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines to avenge himself on the kings enemies. Now Saul thought to cast him into the hands of the Philistines.   Then Saul said, "Thus shall you say to David, 'The king desires no marriage present except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.'" Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
And the servants of Saul report these words to David and David was well pleased to become the son-in-law to the king.   And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. Before the time had expired,וַיַּגִּדוּ עֲבָדָיו לְדָוִד אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיִּשַׁר הַדָּבָר בְּעֵינֵי דָוִד לְהִתְחַתֵּן בַּמֶּלֶךְ וְלֹא מָלְאוּ הַיָּמִים׃ 26
And David arose and went he and his men and smote among the Philistines a hundred men: and he brought their foreskins and he becomes the king's son-in-law   David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines; and David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife.
28 καὶ εἶδεν Σαουλ ὅτι κύριος μετὰ Δαυιδ καὶ πᾶς Ισραηλ ἠγάπα αὐτόν, And Saul saw that the Lord [was] with David and [that] all Israel loved him.   But when Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that all Israel loved him,וַיַּרְא שָׁאוּל וַיֵּדַע כִּי יְהוָה עִם־דָּוִד וּמִיכַל בַּת־שָׁאוּל אֲהֵבַתְהוּ׃ 28
And he was yet more afraid of David.   Saul was still more afraid of David. So Saul was David's enemy continually.

Notes: Format: For the canonical books the parallel passages on this page are seven columns width, reducing to four columns for the Apocrypha - Deuterocanonical books.
Printing: For the most readable option, set your printer to a Landscape setting before printing the page.
The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT,
but use this as the English Text for the remainder of the LXX (Apocrypha - Deuterocanonical books).
The katapi New Study Bible reference section: displays links to parallel passages.
Passage headings are generally as printed in the Bible Society's "Good News Bible", 1976.
