Καὶ ἐλυπήθη Ιωνας λύπην μεγάλην καὶ συνεχύθη. |
But Jonas was very deeply grieved, and he was confounded. |

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. | וַיֵּרַע אֶל־יֹונָה רָעָה גְדֹולָה וַיִּחַר לֹו׃ |

καὶ προσεύξατο πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν Ὦ κύριε, οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου ἔτι ὄντος μου ἐν τῇ γῇ μου; διὰ τοῦτο προέφθασα τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσις, διότι ἔγνων ὅτι σὺ ἐλεήμων καὶ οἰκτίρμων, μακρόθυμος καὶ πολυέλεος καὶ μετανοῶν ἐπὶ ταῖς κακίαις. |
And he prayed to the Lord, and said, O Lord, were not these my words when I was yet in my land? therefore I made haste to flee to Tharsis; because I knew that thou are merciful and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and repentest of evil. |

And he prayed to the LORD and said, "I pray thee, LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and repentest of evil. | וַיִּתְפַּלֵּל אֶל־יְהוָה וַיֹּאמַר אָנָּה יְהוָה הֲלֹוא־זֶה דְבָרִי עַד־הֱיֹותִי עַל־אַדְמָתִי עַל־כֵּן קִדַּמְתִּי לִבְרֹחַ תַּרְשִׁישָׁה כִּי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי אַתָּה אֵל־חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם וְרַב־חֶסֶד וְנִחָם עַל־הָרָעָה׃ |

καὶ νῦν, δέσποτα κύριε, λαβὲ τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, ὅτι καλὸν τὸ ἀποθανεῖν με ἢ ζῆν με. |
And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for [it is] better for me to die than to live. |

Therefore now, O LORD, take my life from me, I beseech thee, for it is better for me to die than to live." | וְעַתָּה יְהוָה קַח־נָא אֶת־נַפְשִׁי מִמֶּנִּי כִּי טֹוב מֹותִי מֵחַיָּי׃ ס |

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Ιωναν Εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σύ; |
And the Lord said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved? |

And the LORD said, "Do you do well to be angry?" | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה הַהֵיטֵב חָרָה לָךְ׃ |

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ιωνας ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἀπέναντι τῆς πόλεως· καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῷ ἐκεῖ σκηνὴν καὶ ἐκάθητο ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς ἐν σκιᾷ, ἕως οὗ ἀπίδῃ τί ἔσται τῇ πόλει. |
And Jonas went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made for himself there a booth, and he sat under it, until he should perceive what would become of the city. |

Then Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city. | וַיֵּצֵא יֹונָה מִן־הָעִיר וַיֵּשֶׁב מִקֶּדֶם לָעִיר וַיַּעַשׂ לֹו שָׁם סֻכָּה וַיֵּשֶׁב תַּחְתֶּיהָ בַּצֵּל עַד אֲשֶׁר יִרְאֶה מַה־יִּהְיֶה בָּעִיר׃ |

καὶ προσέταξεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς κολοκύνθῃ, καὶ ἀνέβη ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς τοῦ Ιωνα τοῦ εἶναι σκιὰν ὑπεράνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τοῦ σκιάζειν αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐχάρη Ιωνας ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ χαρὰν μεγάλην. |
And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jonas, to be a shadow over his head, to shade him from his calamities: and Jonas rejoiced with great joy for the gourd. |

And the LORD God appointed a plant, and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. | וַיְמַן יְהוָה־אֱלֹהִים קִיקָיֹון וַיַּעַל מֵעַל לְיֹונָה לִהְיֹות צֵל עַל־רֹאשֹׁו לְהַצִּיל לֹו מֵרָעָתֹו וַיִּשְׂמַח יֹונָה עַל־הַקִּיקָיֹון שִׂמְחָה גְדֹולָה׃ |

καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ θεὸς σκώληκι ἑωθινῇ τῇ ἐπαύριον, καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὴν κολόκυνθαν, καὶ ἀπεξηράνθη. |
And God commanded a worm the next morning, and it smote the gourd, and it withered away. |

But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered. | וַיְמַן הָאֱלֹהִים תֹּולַעַת בַּעֲלֹות הַשַּׁחַר לַמָּחֳרָת וַתַּךְ אֶת־הַקִּיקָיֹון וַיִּיבָשׁ׃ |

καὶ ἐγένετο ἅμα τῷ ἀνατεῖλαι τὸν ἥλιον καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ θεὸς πνεύματι καύσωνος συγκαίοντι, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ὁ ἥλιος ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν Ιωνα· καὶ ὠλιγοψύχησεν καὶ ἀπελέγετο τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Καλόν μοι ἀποθανεῖν με ἢ ζῆν. |
And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun smote on the head of Jonas, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, [It is] better for me to die than to live. |

When the sun rose, God appointed a sultry east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he was faint; and he asked that he might die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live." | וַיְהִי כִּזְרֹחַ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וַיְמַן אֱלֹהִים רוּחַ קָדִים חֲרִישִׁית וַתַּךְ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ עַל־רֹאשׁ יֹונָה וַיִּתְעַלָּף וַיִּשְׁאַל אֶת־נַפְשֹׁו לָמוּת וַיֹּאמֶר טֹוב מֹותִי מֵחַיָּי׃ |

καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Ιωναν Εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σὺ ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ; καὶ εἶπεν Σφόδρα λελύπημαι ἐγὼ ἕως θανάτου. |
And God said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved for the gourd? And he said, I am very much grieved, even to death. |

But God said to Jonah, "Do you do well to be angry for the plant?" And he said, "I do well to be angry, angry enough to die." | וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־יֹונָה הַהֵיטֵב חָרָה־לְךָ עַל־הַקִּיקָיֹון וַיֹּאמֶר הֵיטֵב חָרָה־לִי עַד־מָוֶת׃ |

καὶ εἶπεν κύριος Σὺ ἐφείσω ὑπὲρ τῆς κολοκύνθης, ὑπὲρ ἧς οὐκ ἐκακοπάθησας ἐπ' αὐτὴν καὶ οὐκ ἐξέθρεψας αὐτήν, ἣ ἐγενήθη ὑπὸ νύκτα καὶ ὑπὸ νύκτα ἀπώλετο. |
And the Lord said, Thou hadst pity on the gourd, for which thou has not suffered, neither didst thou rear it; which came up before night, and perished before [another] night: |

And the LORD said, "You pity the plant, for which you did not labour, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night, and perished in a night. | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אַתָּה חַסְתָּ עַל־הַקִּיקָיֹון אֲשֶׁר לֹא־עָמַלְתָּ בֹּו וְלֹא גִדַּלְתֹּו שֶׁבִּן־לַיְלָה הָיָה וּבִן־לַיְלָה אָבָד׃ |

ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ φείσομαι ὑπὲρ Νινευη τῆς πόλεως τῆς μεγάλης, ἐν ᾗ κατοικοῦσιν πλείους ἢ δώδεκα μυριάδες ἀνθρώπων, οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν δεξιὰν αὐτῶν ἢ ἀριστερὰν αὐτῶν, καὶ κτήνη πολλά; |
and shall not I spare Nineve, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve myriads of human beings, who do not know their right hand or their left hand; and [also] much cattle? |

And should not I pity Nin'eveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?" | וַאֲנִי לֹא אָחוּס עַל־נִינְוֵה הָעִיר הַגְּדֹולָה אֲשֶׁר יֶשׁ־בָּהּ הַרְבֵּה מִשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵה רִבֹּו אָדָם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יָדַע בֵּין־יְמִינֹו לִשְׂמֹאלֹו וּבְהֵמָה רַבָּה׃ |
