The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: | הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר הָיָה אֶל־יִרְמְיָהוּ מֵאֵת יְהוָה לֵאמֹר׃ |

Ἀνάστηθι καὶ κατάβηθι εἰς οἶκον τοῦ κεραμέως, καὶ ἐκεῖ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους μου. |
Jeremias saying Arise and go down to the potter's house and there thou shalt hear my words. |

"Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words." | קוּם וְיָרַדְתָּ בֵּית הַיֹּוצֵר וְשָׁמָּה אַשְׁמִיעֲךָ אֶת־דְּבָרָי׃ |

καὶ κατέβην εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ κεραμέως, καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἐποίει ἔργον ἐπὶ τῶν λίθων· |
So I went down to the potter's house and behold he was making a vessel on the stones. |

So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. | וָאֵרֵד בֵּית הַיֹּוצֵר [כ= וְהִנֵּהוּ] [ק= וְהִנֵּה]־ [ק= הוּא] עֹשֶׂה מְלָאכָה עַל־הָאָבְנָיִם׃ |

καὶ διέπεσεν τὸ ἀγγεῖον, ὃ αὐτὸς ἐποίει, ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάλιν αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν αὐτὸ ἀγγεῖον ἕτερον, καθὼς ἤρεσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ τοῦ ποιῆσαι. |
And the vessel which he was making with his hands fell: so he made it again another vessel as it seemed good to him to make [it]. |

And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. | וְנִשְׁחַת הַכְּלִי אֲשֶׁר הוּא עֹשֶׂה בַּחֹמֶר בְּיַד הַיֹּוצֵר וְשָׁב וַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּ כְּלִי אַחֵר כַּאֲשֶׁר יָשַׁר בְּעֵינֵי הַיֹּוצֵר לַעֲשֹׂות׃ ף |

καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων |
And the word of the Lord came to me saying |

Then the word of the LORD came to me: | וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהוָה אֵלַי לֵאמֹור׃ |

Εἰ καθὼς ὁ κεραμεὺς οὗτος οὐ δυνήσομαι τοῦ ποιῆσαι ὑμᾶς, οἶκος Ισραηλ; ἰδοὺ ὡς ὁ πηλὸς τοῦ κεραμέως ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν ταῖς χερσίν μου. |
Shall I not be able O house of Israel to do to you as this potter? behold as the clay of the potter are ye in my hands. |
|
"O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? says the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. | הֲכַיֹּוצֵר הַזֶּה לֹא־אוּכַל לַעֲשֹׂות לָכֶם בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל נְאֻם־יְהוָה הִנֵּה כַחֹמֶר בְּיַד הַיֹּוצֵר כֵּן־אַתֶּם בְּיָדִי בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ס |

πέρας λαλήσω ἐπὶ ἔθνος ἢ ἐπὶ βασιλείαν τοῦ ἐξᾶραι αὐτοὺς καὶ τοῦ ἀπολλύειν, |
[If] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation or upon a kingdom to cut them off and to destroy [them]; |
|
If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, | רֶגַע אֲדַבֵּר עַל־גֹּוי וְעַל־מַמְלָכָה לִנְתֹושׁ וְלִנְתֹוץ וּלְהַאֲבִיד׃ |

καὶ ἐπιστραφῇ τὸ ἔθνος ἐκεῖνο ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν κακῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ μετανοήσω περὶ τῶν κακῶν, ὧν ἐλογισάμην τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς· |
and that nation turn from all their sins then will I repent of the evils which I purposed to do to them. |

and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will repent of the evil that I intended to do to it. | וְשָׁב הַגֹּוי הַהוּא מֵרָעָתֹו אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי עָלָיו וְנִחַמְתִּי עַל־הָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר חָשַׁבְתִּי לַעֲשֹׂות לֹו׃ ס |

καὶ πέρας λαλήσω ἐπὶ ἔθνος καὶ ἐπὶ βασιλείαν τοῦ ἀνοικοδομεῖσθαι καὶ τοῦ καταφυτεύεσθαι, |
And [if] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation and kingdom to rebuild and to plant [it]; |
|
And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, | וְרֶגַע אֲדַבֵּר עַל־גֹּוי וְעַל־מַמְלָכָה לִבְנֹת וְלִנְטֹעַ׃ |

καὶ ποιήσωσιν τὰ πονηρὰ ἐναντίον μου τοῦ μὴ ἀκούειν τῆς φωνῆς μου, καὶ μετανοήσω περὶ τῶν ἀγαθῶν, ὧν ἐλάλησα τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς. |
and they do evil before me so as not to hearken to my voice then will I repent of the good which I spoke of to do it to them. |

and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will repent of the good which I had intended to do to it. | וְעָשָׂה [כ= הָרָעָה] [ק= הָרַע] בְּעֵינַי לְבִלְתִּי שְׁמֹעַ בְּקֹולִי וְנִחַמְתִּי עַל־הַטֹּובָה אֲשֶׁר אָמַרְתִּי לְהֵיטִיב אֹותֹו׃ ס |

καὶ νῦν εἰπὸν πρὸς ἄνδρας Ιουδα καὶ πρὸς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ιερουσαλημ Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ πλάσσω ἐφ' ὑμᾶς κακὰ καὶ λογίζομαι ἐφ' ὑμᾶς λογισμόν· ἀποστραφήτω δὴ ἕκαστος ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς, καὶ καλλίονα ποιήσετε τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα ὑμῶν. |
And now say to the men of Juda and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem Behold I prepare evils against you and devise a device against you: let every one turn now from his evil way |

Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: 'Thus says the LORD, Behold, I am shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.' | וְעַתָּה אֱמָר־נָא אֶל־אִישׁ־יְהוּדָה וְעַל־יֹושְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם לֵאמֹר כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי יֹוצֵר עֲלֵיכֶם רָעָה וְחֹשֵׁב עֲלֵיכֶם מַחֲשָׁבָה שׁוּבוּ נָא אִישׁ מִדַּרְכֹּו הָרָעָה וְהֵיטִיבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶם וּמַעַלְלֵיכֶם׃ |

| 12 |
καὶ εἶπαν Ἀνδριούμεθα, ὅτι ὀπίσω τῶν ἀποστροφῶν ἡμῶν πορευσόμεθα καὶ ἕκαστος τὰ ἀρεστὰ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς ποιήσομεν. |
And they said We will quit ourselves like men for we will pursue our perverse ways and we will perform each the lusts of his evil heart. |
|
"But they say, 'That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.' | וְאָמְרוּ נֹואָשׁ כִּי־אַחֲרֵי מַחְשְׁבֹותֵינוּ נֵלֵךְ וְאִישׁ שְׁרִרוּת לִבֹּו־הָרָע נַעֲשֶׂה׃ ס |

| 13 |
διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος Ἑρωτήσατε δὴ ἐν ἔθνεσιν Τίς ἤκουσεν τοιαῦτα φρικτά, ἃ ἐποίησεν σφόδρα παρθένος Ισραηλ; |
Therefore thus saith the Lord; Enquire now among the nations who has heard such very horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done? |
The people reject the LORD. Jr.18.13-17 |
"Therefore thus says the LORD:
Ask among the nations,
who has heard the like of this?
The virgin Israel
has done a very horrible thing.
| לָכֵן כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה שַׁאֲלוּ־נָא בַּגֹּויִם מִי שָׁמַע כָּאֵלֶּה
שַׁעֲרֻרִת עָשְׂתָה מְאֹד בְּתוּלַת יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ |
13 |
| 14 |
μὴ ἐκλείψουσιν ἀπὸ πέτρας μαστοὶ ἢ χιὼν ἀπὸ τοῦ Λιβάνου; μὴ ἐκκλινεῖ ὕδωρ βιαίως ἀνέμῳ φερόμενον; |
Will fertilising streams fail [to flow] from a rock or snow [fail] from Libanus? will water violently impelled by the wind turn aside? |

Does the snow of Lebanon leave
the crags of Si'rion?
Do the mountain waters run dry,
the cold flowing streams?
| הֲיַעֲזֹב מִצּוּר שָׂדַי שֶׁלֶג לְבָנֹון
אִם־יִנָּתְשׁוּ מַיִם זָרִים קָרִים נֹוזְלִים׃ |
14 |
| 15 |
ὅτι ἐπελάθοντό μου ὁ λαός μου, εἰς κενὸν ἐθυμίασαν· καὶ ἀσθενήσουσιν ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν σχοίνους αἰωνίους τοῦ ἐπιβῆναι τρίβους οὐκ ἔχοντας ὁδὸν εἰς πορείαν |
For my people have forgotten me they have offered incense in vain and they fail in their ways [leaving] the ancient tracks to enter upon impassable paths; |
|
But my people have forgotten me,
they burn incense to false gods;
they have stumbled in their ways,
in the ancient roads,
and have gone into bypaths,
not the highway,
| כִּי־שְׁכֵחֻנִי עַמִּי לַשָּׁוְא יְקַטֵּרוּ
וַיַּכְשִׁלוּם בְּדַרְכֵיהֶם שְׁבִילֵי עֹולָם
לָלֶכֶת נְתִיבֹות דֶּרֶךְ לֹא סְלוּלָה׃ |
15 |
| 16 |
τοῦ τάξαι τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν εἰς ἀφανισμὸν καὶ σύριγμα αἰώνιον· πάντες οἱ διαπορευόμενοι δι' αὐτῆς ἐκστήσονται καὶ κινήσουσιν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν. |
to make their land a desolation and a perpetual hissing; all that go through it shall be amazed and shall shake their heads. |

making their land a horror,
a thing to be hissed at for ever.
Every one who passes by it is horrified
and shakes his head.
| לָשׂוּם אַרְצָם לְשַׁמָּה [כ= שְׁרוּקַת] [ק= שְׁרִיקֹות ] עֹולָם
כֹּל עֹובֵר עָלֶיהָ יִשֹּׁם וְיָנִיד בְּרֹאשֹׁו׃ |
16 |
| 17 |
ὡς ἄνεμον καύσωνα διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς κατὰ πρόσωπον ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν, δείξω αὐτοῖς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας αὐτῶν. |
I will scatter them before their enemies like an east wind; I will shew them the day of their destruction. |
|
Like the east wind I will scatter them
before the enemy.
I will show them my back, not my face,
in the day of their calamity." | כְּרוּחַ־קָדִים אֲפִיצֵם לִפְנֵי אֹויֵב
עֹרֶף וְלֹא־פָנִים אֶרְאֵם בְּיֹום אֵידָם׃ ס |

Καὶ εἶπαν Δεῦτε λογισώμεθα ἐπὶ Ιερεμιαν λογισμόν, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπολεῖται νόμος ἀπὸ ἱερέως καὶ βουλὴ ἀπὸ συνετοῦ καὶ λόγος ἀπὸ προφήτου· δεῦτε καὶ πατάξωμεν αὐτὸν ἐν γλώσσῃ καὶ ἀκουσόμεθα πάντας τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ. - |
Then they said Come and let us devise a device against Jeremias; for the law shall not perish from the priest nor counsel from the wise nor the word from the prophet. Come |
A plot against Jeremiah. Jr.18.18-23 |
Then they said, "Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not heed any of his words." | וַיֹּאמְרוּ לְכוּ וְנַחְשְׁבָה עַל־יִרְמְיָהוּ מַחֲשָׁבֹות כִּי לֹא־תֹאבַד תֹּורָה מִכֹּהֵן וְעֵצָה מֵחָכָם וְדָבָר מִנָּבִיא לְכוּ וְנַכֵּהוּ בַלָּשֹׁון וְאַל־נַקְשִׁיבָה אֶל־כָּל־דְּבָרָיו׃ |

εἰσάκουσόν μου, κύριε, καὶ εἰσάκουσον τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ δικαιώματός μου. |
Hear me O Lord and hear the voice of my pleading. |
|
Give heed to me, O LORD,
and hearken to my plea.
| הַקְשִׁיבָה יְהוָה אֵלָי וּשְׁמַע לְקֹול יְרִיבָי׃ |
19 |
| 20 |
εἰ ἀνταποδίδοται ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν κακά; ὅτι συνελάλησαν ῥήματα κατὰ τῆς ψυχῆς μου καὶ τὴν κόλασιν αὐτῶν ἔκρυψάν μοι· μνήσθητι ἑστηκότος μου κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου τοῦ λαλῆσαι ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀγαθὰ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι τὸν θυμόν σου ἀπ' αὐτῶν. |
Forasmuch as evil is rewarded for good; for they have spoken words against my soul and they have hidden the punishment they [meant] for me; remember that I stood before thy face to speak good for them to turn away thy wrath from them. |

Is evil a recompense for good?
Yet they have dug a pit for my life.
Remember how I stood before thee
to speak good for them,
to turn away thy wrath from them.
| הַיְשֻׁלַּם תַּחַת־טֹובָה רָעָה כִּי־כָרוּ שׁוּחָה לְנַפְשִׁי זְכֹר עָמְדִי
לְפָנֶיךָ לְדַבֵּר עֲלֵיהֶם טֹובָה לְהָשִׁיב אֶת־חֲמָתְךָ מֵהֶם׃ |

διὰ τοῦτο δὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν εἰς λιμὸν καὶ ἄθροισον αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας μαχαίρας· γενέσθωσαν αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν ἄτεκνοι καὶ χῆραι, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτῶν γενέσθωσαν ἀνῃρημένοι θανάτῳ καὶ οἱ νεανίσκοι αὐτῶν πεπτωκότες μαχαίρᾳ ἐν πολέμῳ. |
Therefore do thou deliver their sons to famine and gather them to the power of the sword: let their women be childless and widows; and let their men be cut off by death and their young men fall by the sword in war. |

Therefore deliver up their children to famine;
give them over to the power of the sword,
let their wives become childless and widowed.
May their men meet death by pestilence,
their youths be slain by the sword in battle.
| לָכֵן תֵּן אֶת־בְּנֵיהֶם לָרָעָב וְהַגִּרֵם עַל־יְדֵי־חֶרֶב
וְתִהְיֶנָה נְשֵׁיהֶם שַׁכֻּלֹות וְאַלְמָנֹות
וְאַנְשֵׁיהֶם יִהְיוּ הֲרֻגֵי מָוֶת בַּחוּרֵיהֶם מֻכֵּי־חֶרֶב בַּמִּלְחָמָה׃ |
21 |

γενηθήτω κραυγὴ ἐν ταῖς οἰκίαις αὐτῶν, ἐπάξεις ἐπ' αὐτοὺς λῃστὰς ἄφνω, ὅτι ἐνεχείρησαν λόγον εἰς σύλλημψίν μου καὶ παγίδας ἔκρυψαν ἐπ' ἐμέ. |
Let there be a cry in their houses: thou shalt bring upon them robbers suddenly: for they have formed a plan to take me and have hidden snares for me. |
|
May a cry be heard from their houses,
when thou bringest the marauder suddenly upon them!
For they have dug a pit to take me,
and laid snares for my feet.
| תִּשָּׁמַע זְעָקָה מִבָּתֵּיהֶם כִּי־תָבִיא עֲלֵיהֶם גְּדוּד פִּתְאֹם
כִּי־כָרוּ [כ= שִׁיחָה] [ק= שׁוּחָה] לְלָכְדֵנִי וּפַחִים טָמְנוּ לְרַגְלָי׃ |

καὶ σύ, κύριε, ἔγνως ἅπασαν τὴν βουλὴν αὐτῶν ἐπ' ἐμὲ εἰς θάνατον· μὴ ἀθῳώσῃς τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου μὴ ἐξαλείψῃς· γενέσθω ἡ ἀσθένεια αὐτῶν ἐναντίον σου, ἐν καιρῷ θυμοῦ σου ποίησον ἐν αὐτοῖς. |
And thou Lord knowest all their deadly counsel against me: account not their iniquities guiltless and blot not out their sins from before thee: let their weakness come before thee; deal with them in the time of thy wrath. |
|
Yet, thou, O LORD, knowest
all their plotting to slay me.
Forgive not their iniquity,
nor blot out their sin from thy sight.
Let them be overthrown before thee;
deal with them in the time of thine anger. | וְאַתָּה יְהוָה יָדַעְתָּ אֶת־כָּל־עֲצָתָם עָלַי לַמָּוֶת
אַל־תְּכַפֵּר עַל־עֲוֹנָם וְחַטָּאתָם מִלְּפָנֶיךָ אַל־תֶּמְחִי
[כ= וְהָיוּ] [ק= וְיִהְיוּ] מֻכְשָׁלִים לְפָנֶיךָ בְּעֵת אַפְּךָ עֲשֵׂה בָהֶם׃ ס |
