1ἐπικάλεσαι δέ, εἴ τίς σοι ὑπακούσεται,
ἢ εἴ τινα ἀγγέλων ἁγίων ὄψῃ.
 But call, if any one will listen to you,
or if you shall see any of the holy angels.
 "Call now; is there any one who will answer you?
To which of the holy ones will you turn?
קְרָא־נָא הֲיֵשׁ עֹונֶךָּ וְאֶל־מִי מִקְּדֹשִׁימ תִּפְנֶה׃ 1
2καὶ γὰρ ἄφρονα ἀναιρεῖ ὀργή,
πεπλανημένον δὲ θανατοῖ ζῆλος.
 For wrath destroys the foolish one,
and envy slays him that has gone astray.
 Surely vexation kills the fool,
and jealousy slays the simple.
כִּי־לֶאֱוִיל יַהֲרָג־כָּעַשׂ וּפֹתֶה תָּמִית קִנְאָה׃ 2
3ἐγὼ δὲ ἑώρακα ἄφρονας ῥίζαν βάλλοντας,
ἀλλ' εὐθέως ἐβρώθη αὐτῶν ἡ δίαιτα.
 And I have seen foolish ones taking root:
but suddenly their habitation was devoured.
 I have seen the fool taking root,
but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.
אֲנִי־רָאִיתִי אֱוִיל מַשְׁרִישׁ וָאֶקֹּוב נָוֵהוּ פִתְאֹם׃ 3
4πόρρω γένοιντο οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ σωτηρίας,
κολαβρισθείησαν δὲ ἐπὶ θύραις ἡσσόνων,
καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ ἐξαιρούμενος·
 Let their children be far from safety,
and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men,
and let there be no deliverer.
 His sons are far from safety,
they are crushed in the gate,
and there is no one to deliver them.
יִרְחֲקוּ בָנָיו מִיֶּשַׁע וְיִדַּכְּאוּ בַשַּׁעַר וְאֵין מַצִּיל׃ 4
5ἃ γὰρ ἐκεῖνοι συνήγαγον, δίκαιοι ἔδονται,
αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐκ κακῶν οὐκ ἐξαίρετοι ἔσονται,
ἐκσιφωνισθείη αὐτῶν ἡ ἰσχύς.
 For what they have collected, the just shall eat;
but they shall not be delivered out of calamities:
let their strength be utterly exhausted.
 His harvest the hungry eat,
and he takes it even out of thorns;
and the thirsty pant after his wealth.
אֲשֶׁר קְצִירֹו רָעֵב יֹאכֵל וְאֶל־מִצִּנִּים יִקָּחֵהוּ וְשָׁאַף צַמִּים חֵילָם׃ 5
6οὐ γὰρ μὴ ἐξέλθῃ ἐκ τῆς γῆς κόπος,
οὐδὲ ἐξ ὀρέων ἀναβλαστήσει πόνος·
 For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth,
nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains:
 For affliction does not come from the dust,
nor does trouble sprout from the ground;
כִּי לֹא־יֵצֵא מֵעָפָר אָוֶן וּמֵאֲדָמָה לֹא־יִצְמַח עָמָל׃ 6
7ἀλλὰ ἄνθρωπος γεννᾶται κόπῳ, νεοσσοὶ δὲ γυπὸς τὰ ὑψηλὰ πέτονται.
 yet man is born to labour,
and [even so] the vulture's young seek the high places.
 but man is born to trouble
as the sparks fly upward.
כִּי־אָדָם לְעָמָל יוּלָּד וּבְנֵי־רֶשֶׁף יַגְבִּיהוּ עוּף׃ 7
8οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ ἐγὼ δεηθήσομαι Κυρίου,
Κύριον δὲ τὸν πάντων δεσπότην ἐπικαλέσομαι,
 Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord,
and will call upon the Lord,
the sovereign of all;
 "As for me, I would seek God,
and to God would I commit my cause;
אוּלָם אֲנִי אֶדְרֹשׁ אֶל־אֵל וְאֶל־אֱלֹהִים אָשִׂים דִּבְרָתִי׃ 8
9τὸν ποιοῦντα μεγάλα καὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα,
ἔνδοξά τε καὶ ἐξαίσια, ὧν οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμός·
 who does great things and untraceable,
glorious things also, and marvelous,
of which there is no number:
 who does great things and unsearchable,
marvelous things without number:
עֹשֶׂה גְדֹלֹות וְאֵין חֵקֶר נִפְלָאֹות עַד־אֵין מִסְפָּר׃ 9
10τὸν διδόντα ὑετὸν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν,
ἀποστέλλοντα ὕδωρ ἐπὶ τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανόν·
 who gives rain upon the earth,
sending water on the earth:
 he gives rain upon the earth
and sends waters upon the fields;
הַנֹּתֵן מָטָר עַל־פְּנֵי־אָרֶץ וְשֹׁלֵחַ מַיִם עַל־פְּנֵי חוּצֹות׃ 10
11τὸν ποιοῦντα ταπεινοὺς εἰς ὕψος
καὶ ἀπολωλότας ἐξεγείροντα·
 who exalts the lowly,
and raises up them that are lost:
 he sets on high those who are lowly,
and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
לָשׂוּם שְׁפָלִים לְמָרֹום וְקֹדְרִים שָׂגְבוּ יֶשַׁע׃ 11
12διαλλάσσοντα βουλὰς πανούργων,
καὶ οὐ μὴ ποιήσουσιν αἱ χεῖρες αὐτῶν ἀληθές.
 frustrating the counsels of the crafty,
and their hands shall not perform the truth:
 He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
so that their hands achieve no success.
מֵפֵר מַחְשְׁבֹות עֲרוּמִים וְלֹא־תַעֲשֶׂינָה יְדֵיהֶם תּוּשִׁיָּה׃ 12
13ὁ καταλαμβάνων σοφοὺς ἐν τῇ φρονήσει,
βουλὴν δὲ πολυπλόκων ἐξέστησεν·
 who takes the wise in their wisdom,
and subverts the counsel of the crafty
 He takes the wise in their own craftiness;
and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
לֹכֵד חֲכָמִים בְּעָרְםָם וַעֲצַת נִפְתָּלִים נִמְהָרָה׃ 13
14ἡμέρας συναντήσεται αὐτοῖς σκότος,
τὸ δὲ μεσημβρινὸν ψηλαφήσαισαν ἴσα νυκτί.
 In the day darkness shall come upon them,
and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night:
 They meet with darkness in the daytime,
and grope at noonday as in the night.
יֹוםָם יְפַגְּשׁוּ־חֹשֶׁךְ וְכַלַּיְלָה יְמַשְׁשׁוּ בַצָּהֳרָיִם׃ 14
15ἀπόλοιντο δὲ ἐν πολέμῳ,
ἀδύνατος δὲ ἐξέλθοι ἐκ χειρὸς δυνάστου·
 and let them perish in war,
and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty.
 But he saves the fatherless from their mouth,
the needy from the hand of the mighty.
וַיֹּשַׁע מֵחֶרֶב מִפִּיהֶם וּמִיַּד חָזָק אֶבְיֹון׃ 15
16εἴη δὲ ἀδυνάτῳ ἐλπίς,
ἀδίκου δὲ στόμα ἐμφραχθείη.
 And let the weak have hope,
but the mouth of the unjust be stopped.
 So the poor have hope,
and injustice shuts her mouth.
וַתְּהִי לַדַּל תִּקְוָה וְעֹלָתָה קָפְצָה פִּיהָ׃ 16
17μακάριος δὲ ἄνθρωπος, ὃν ἤλεγξεν ὁ κύριος·
νουθέτημα δὲ παντοκράτορος μὴ ἀπαναίνου.
 But blessed [is] the man whom the Lord has reproved;
and reject not you the chastening of the Almighty.
 "Behold, happy is the man whom God reproves;
therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
הִנֵּה אַשְׁרֵי אֱנֹושׁ יֹוכִחֶנּוּ אֱלֹוהַּ וּמוּסַר שַׁדַּי אַל־תִּמְאָס׃ 17
18αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀλγεῖν ποιεῖ καὶ πάλιν ἀποκαθίστησιν·
ἔπαισεν, καὶ αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἰάσαντο.
 for he causes [a man] to be in pain, and restores [him] again:
he smites, and his hands heal.
 For he wounds, but he binds up;
he smites, but his hands heal.
כִּי הוּא יַכְאִיב וְיֶחְבָּשׁ יִמְחַץ [כ= וְיָדֹו] [ק= וְיָדָיו] תִּרְפֶּינָה׃ 18
19ἑξάκις ἐξ ἀναγκῶν σε ἐξελεῖται, ἐν δὲ τῷ ἑβδόμῳ οὐ μὴ ἅψηταί σου κακόν.
 Six time he shall deliver you out of distresses:
and in the seventh harm shall not touch you.
 He will deliver you from six troubles;
in seven there shall no evil touch you.
בְּשֵׁשׁ צָרֹות יַצִּילֶךָּ וּבְשֶׁבַע לֹא־יִגַּע בְּךָ רָע׃ 19
20ἐν λιμῷ ῥύσεταί σε ἐκ θανάτου,
ἐν πολέμῳ δὲ ἐκ χειρὸς σιδήρου λύσει σε.
 In famine he shall deliver you from death:
and in war he shall free you from the power of the sword.
 In famine he will redeem you from death,
and in war from the power of the sword.
בְּרָעָב פָּדְךָ מִמָּוֶת וּבְמִלְחָמָה מִידֵי חָרֶב׃ 20
21ἀπὸ μάστιγος γλώσσης σε κρύψει,
καὶ οὐ μὴ φοβηθῇς ἀπὸ κακῶν ἐρχομένων.
 He shall hide you from the scourge of the tongue:
and you shall not be afraid of coming evils.
 You shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue,
and shall not fear destruction when it comes.
בְּשֹׁוט לָשֹׁון תֵּחָבֵא וְלֹא־תִירָא מִשֹּׁד כִּי יָבֹוא׃ 21
22ἀδίκων καὶ ἀνόμων καταγελάσῃ, ἀπὸ δὲ θηρίων ἀγρίων οὐ μὴ φοβηθῇς·
 You shall laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless:
and you shall not be afraid of wild beasts.
 At destruction and famine you shall laugh,
and shall not fear the beasts of the earth.
לְשֹׁד וּלְכָפָן תִּשְׂחָק וּמֵחַיַּת הָאָרֶץ אַל־תִּירָא׃ 22
23θῆρες γὰρ ἄγριοι εἰρηνεύσουσίν σοι.
 For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
כִּי עִם־אַבְנֵי הַשָּׂדֶה בְרִיתֶךָ וְחַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה הָשְׁלְמָה־לָךְ׃ 23
24εἶτα γνώσῃ ὅτι εἰρηνεύσει σου ὁ οἶκος,
ἡ δὲ δίαιτα τῆς σκηνῆς σου οὐ μὴ ἁμάρτῃ.
 Then shall you know that your house shall be at peace,
and the provision for your tabernacle shall not fail.
 You shall know that your tent is safe,
and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing.
וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי־שָׁלֹום אָהֳלֶךָ וּפָקַדְתָּ נָוְךָ וְלֹא תֶחֱטָא׃ 24
25γνώσῃ δὲ ὅτι πολὺ τὸ σπέρμα σου,
τὰ δὲ τέκνα σου ἔσται ὥσπερ τὸ παμβότανον τοῦ ἀγροῦ.
 And you shall know that your seed [shall be] abundant;
and your children shall be like the herbage of the field.
 You shall know also that your descendants shall be many,
and your offspring as the grass of the earth.
וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי־רַב זַרְעֶךָ וְצֶאֱצָאֶיךָ כְּעֵשֶׂב הָאָרֶץ׃ 25
26ἐλεύσῃ δὲ ἐν τάφῳ ὥσπερ σῖτος ὥριμος κατὰ καιρὸν θεριζόμενος,
ἢ ὥσπερ θιμωνιὰ ἅλωνος καθ' ὥραν συγκομισθεῖσα.
 And you shall come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season,
or as a heap of the corn-flour collected in proper time.
 You shall come to your grave in ripe old age,
as a shock of grain comes up to the threshing floor in its season.
תָּבֹוא בְכֶלַח אֱלֵי־קָבֶר כַּעֲלֹות גָּדִישׁ בְּעִתֹּו׃ 26
27ἰδοὺ ταῦτα οὕτως ἐξιχνιάσαμεν, ταῦτά ἐστιν ἃ ἀκηκόαμεν·
σὺ δὲ γνῶθι σεαυτῷ εἴ τι ἔπραξας.
 Behold, we have thus sought out these matters;
these are what we have heard:
but do you reflect with yourself, if you have done anything [wrong].
 Lo, this we have searched out; it is true.
Hear, and know it for your own good."		הִנֵּה־זֹאת חֲקַרְנוּהָ כֶּן־הִיא שְׁמָעֶנָּה וְאַתָּה דַע־לָךְ׃ ף 27
