1διαθήκην ἐθέμην τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μου,
καὶ οὐ συνήσω ἐπὶ παρθένον.
 I made a covenant with mine eyes,
and I will not think upon a virgin.
 "I have made a covenant with my eyes;
how then could I look upon a virgin?
בְּרִית כָּרַתִּי לְעֵינָי וּמָה אֶתְבֹּוןֵן עַל־בְּתוּלָה׃ 1
2καὶ τί ἐμέρισεν ὁ θεὸς ἀπάνωθεν,
καὶ κληρονομία ἱκανοῦ ἐξ ὑψίστων;
 Now what portion has God given from above?
and is there an inheritance [given] of the Mighty One from the highest?
 What would be my portion from God above,
and my heritage from the Almighty on high?
וּמֶה חֵלֶק אֱלֹוהַּ מִמָּעַל וְנַחֲלַת שַׁדַּי מִמְּרֹמִים׃ 2
3οὐχὶ ἀπώλεια τῷ ἀδίκῳ καὶ ἀπαλλοτρίωσις τοῖς ποιοῦσιν ἀνομίαν;
 Alas! destruction to the unrighteous,
and rejection to them that do iniquity.
 Does not calamity befall the unrighteous,
and disaster the workers of iniquity?
הֲלֹא־אֵיד לְעַוָּל וְנֵכֶר לְפֹעֲלֵי אָוֶן׃ 3
4οὐχὶ αὐτὸς ὄψεται ὁδόν μου,
καὶ πάντα τὰ διαβήματά μου ἐξαριθμήσεται;
 Will he not see my way,
and number all my steps?
 Does not he see my ways,
and number all my steps?
הֲלֹא־הוּא יִרְאֶה דְרָכָי וְכָל־צְעָדַי יִסְפֹּור׃ 4
5εἰ δὲ ἤμην πεπορευμένος μετὰ γελοιαστῶν,
εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐσπούδασεν ὁ πούς μου εἰς δόλον,
 But if I had gone with scorners,
and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:
 "If I have walked with falsehood,
and my foot has hastened to deceit;
אִם־הָלַכְתִּי עִם־שָׁוְא וַתַּחַשׁ עַל־מִרְמָה רַגְלִי׃ 5
6ἱσταίη με ἄρα ἐν ζυγῷ δικαίῳ,
οἶδεν δὲ ὁ κύριος τὴν ἀκακίαν μου.
 (for I am weighed in a just balance,
and the Lord knows my innocence:)
 (Let me be weighed in a just balance,
and let God know my integrity!)
יִשְׁקְלֵנִי בְמֹאזְנֵי־צֶדֶק וְיֵדַע אֱלֹוהַּ תֻּמָּתִי׃ 6
7εἰ ἐξέκλινεν ὁ πούς μου ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ,
εἰ δὲ καὶ τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου,
εἰ δὲ καὶ ταῖς χερσίν μου ἡψάμην δώρων,
 if my foot has turned aside out of the way,
or if mine heart has followed mine eye,
and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;
 if my step has turned aside from the way,
and my heart has gone after my eyes,
and if any spot has cleaved to my hands;
אִם תִּטֶּה אַשֻּׁרִי מִנִּי הַדָּרֶךְ וְאַחַר עֵינַי הָלַךְ לִבִּי וּבְכַפַּי דָּבַק מֻאוּם׃ ף 7
8σπείραιμι ἄρα καὶ ἄλλοι φάγοισαν,
ἄρριζος δὲ γενοίμην ἐπὶ γῆς.
 then let me sow, and let others eat;
and let me be uprooted on the earth.
 then let me sow, and another eat;
and let what grows for me be rooted out.
אֶזְרְעָה וְאַחֵר יֹאכֵל וְצֶאֱצָאַי יְשֹׁרָשׁוּ׃ 8
9εἰ ἐξηκολούθησεν ἡ καρδία μου γυναικὶ ἀνδρὸς ἑτέρου,
εἰ καὶ ἐγκάθετος ἐγενόμην ἐπὶ θύραις αὐτῆς,
 If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife,
and if I laid wait at her doors;
 "If my heart has been enticed to a woman,
and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
אִם־נִפְתָּה לִבִּי עַל־אִשָּׁה וְעַל־פֶּתַח רֵעִי אָרָבְתִּי׃ 9
10ἀρέσαι ἄρα καὶ ἡ γυνή μου ἑτέρῳ,
τὰ δὲ νήπιά μου ταπεινωθείη·
 then let my wife also please another,
and let my children be brought low.
 then let my wife grind for another,
and let others bow down upon her.
תִּטְחַן לְאַחֵר אִשְׁתִּי וְעָלֶיהָ יִכְרְעוּן אֲחֵרִין׃ 10
11θυμὸς γὰρ ὀργῆς ἀκατάσχετος τὸ μιᾶναι ἀνδρὸς γυναῖκα·
 For the rage of anger is not to be controlled,
[in the case] of defiling [another] man's wife.
 For that would be a heinous crime;
that would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
כִּי־[כ= הוּא] [ק= הִיא] זִמָּה [כ= וְהִיא] [ק= וְהוּא] עָוֹן פְּלִילִים׃ 11
12πῦρ γάρ ἐστιν καιόμενον ἐπὶ πάντων τῶν μερῶν,
οὗ δ' ἂν ἐπέλθῃ, ἐκ ῥιζῶν ἀπώλεσεν.
 For it is a fire burning on every side,
and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
 for that would be a fire which consumes unto Abaddon,
and it would burn to the root all my increase.
כִּי אֵשׁ הִיא עַד־אֲבַדֹּון תֹּאכֵל וּבְכָל־תְּבוּאָתִי תְשָׁרֵשׁ׃ 12
13εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐφαύλισα κρίμα θεράποντός μου ἢ θεραπαίνης κρινομένων αὐτῶν πρός με,
 And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or [my] handmaid,
when they pleaded with me;
 "If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant,
when they brought a complaint against me;
אִם־אֶמְאַס מִשְׁפַּט עַבְדִּי וַאֲמָתִי בְּרִבָם עִמָּדִי׃ 13
14τί γὰρ ποιήσω, ἐὰν ἔτασίν μου ποιήσηται ὁ κύριος;
ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἐπισκοπήν, τίνα ἀπόκρισιν ποιήσομαι;
 what then shall I do if the Lord should try me?
and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
 what then shall I do when God rises up?
When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him?
וּמָה אֶעֱשֶׂה כִּי־יָקוּם אֵל וְכִי־יִפְקֹד מָה אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃ 14
15πότερον οὐχ ὡς καὶ ἐγὼ ἐγενόμην ἐν γαστρί, καὶ ἐκεῖνοι γεγόνασιν;
γεγόναμεν δὲ ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ κοιλίᾳ.
 Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb?
yes,
we were formed in the same womb.
 Did not he who made me in the womb make him?
And did not one fashion us in the womb?
הֲלֹא־בַבֶּטֶן עֹשֵׂנִי עָשָׂהוּ וַיְכֻנֶנּוּ בָּרֶחֶם אֶחָד׃ 15
16ἀδύνατοι δὲ χρείαν, ἥν ποτ εἶχον, οὐκ ἀπέτυχον,
χήρας δὲ τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν οὐκ ἐξέτηξα.
 But the helpless missed not whatever need they had,
and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.
 "If I have withheld anything that the poor desired,
or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
אִם־אֶמְנַע מֵחֵפֶץ דַּלִּים וְעֵינֵי אַלְמָנָה אֲכַלֶּה׃ 16
17εἰ δὲ καὶ τὸν ψωμόν μου ἔφαγον μόνος καὶ οὐχὶ ὀρφανῷ μετέδωκα·
 And if too I ate my morsel alone,
and did not impart [of it] to the orphan;
 or have eaten my morsel alone,
and the fatherless has not eaten of it
וְאֹכַל פִּתִּי לְבַדִּי וְלֹא־אָכַל יָתֹום מִמֶּנָּה׃ 17
18ὅτι ἐκ νεότητός μου ἐξέτρεφον ὡς πατὴρ,
καὶ ἐκ γαστρὸς μητρός μου ὡδήγησα·
 (for I nourished [them] as a father from my youth and guided [them] from my mother's womb.)
 (for from his youth I reared him as a father,
and from his mother's womb I guided him);
כִּי מִנְּעוּרַי גְּדֵלַנִי כְאָב וּמִבֶּטֶן אִמִּי אַנְחֶנָּה׃ 18
19εἰ δὲ καὶ ὑπερεῖδον γυμνὸν ἀπολλύμενον καὶ οὐκ ἠμφίασα,
 And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing,
and did not clothe him;
 if I have seen any one perish for lack of clothing,
or a poor man without covering;
אִם־אֶרְאֶה אֹובֵד מִבְּלִי לְבוּשׁ וְאֵין כְּסוּת לָאֶבְיֹון׃ 19
20ἀδύνατοι δὲ εἰ μὴ εὐλόγησάν με,
ἀπὸ δὲ κουρᾶς ἀμνῶν μου ἐθερμάνθησαν οἱ ὦμοι αὐτῶν,
 and if the poor did not bless me,
and their shoulders were [not] warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
 if his loins have not blessed me,
and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
אִם־לֹא בֵרֲכוּנִי [כ= חֲלָצֹו] [ק= חֲלָצָיו] וּמִגֵּז כְּבָשַׂי יִתְחַםָּם׃ 20
21εἰ ἐπῆρα ὀρφανῷ χεῖρα πεποιθὼς ὅτι πολλή μοι βοήθεια περίεστιν,
 if I lifted my hand against an orphan,
trusting that my strength was far superior [to his]:
 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless,
because I saw help in the gate;
אִם־הֲנִיפֹותִי עַל־יָתֹום יָדִי כִּי־אֶרְאֶה בַשַּׁעַר עֶזְרָתִי׃ 21
22ἀποσταίη ἄρα ὁ ὦμός μου ἀπὸ τῆς κλειδός,
ὁ δὲ βραχίων μου ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀγκῶνός μου συντριβείη.
 let them my shoulder start from the blade-bone,
and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.
 then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder,
and let my arm be broken from its socket.
כְּתֵפִי מִשִּׁכְמָה תִפֹּול וְאֶזְרֹעִי מִקָּנָה תִשָּׁבֵר׃ 22
23φόβος γὰρ κυρίου συνέσχεν με,
καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ λήμματος αὐτοῦ οὐχ ὑποίσω.
 For the fear of the Lord constrained me,
and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.
 For I was in terror of calamity from God,
and I could not have faced his majesty.
כִּי פַחַד אֵלַי אֵיד אֵל וּמִשְּׂאֵתֹו לֹא אוּכָל׃ 23
24εἰ ἔταξα χρυσίον ἰσχύν μου,
εἰ δὲ καὶ λίθῳ πολυτελεῖ ἐπεποίθησα,
 If I made gold my treasure,
and if too I trusted the precious stone;
 "If I have made gold my trust,
or called fine gold my confidence;
אִם־שַׂמְתִּי זָהָב כִּסְלִי וְלַכֶּתֶם אָמַרְתִּי מִבְטַחִי׃ 24
25εἰ δὲ καὶ εὐφράνθην πολλοῦ πλούτου μοι γενομένου,
εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπ' ἀναριθμήτοις ἐθέμην χεῖρά μου,
 and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant,
and if too I laid my hand on innumerable [treasures]:
 if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
or because my hand had gotten much;
אִם־אֶשְׂמַח כִּי־רַב חֵילִי וְכִי־כַבִּיר מָצְאָה יָדִי׃ 25
26ἦ οὐχ ὁρῶ μὲν ἥλιον τὸν ἐπιφαύσκοντα ἐκλείποντα,
σελήνην δὲ φθίνουσαν; οὐ γὰρ ἐπ' αὐτοῖς ἐστιν.
 (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning?
for they have not [power to continue]:)
 if I have looked at the sun when it shone,
or the moon moving in splendor,
אִם־אֶרְאֶה אֹור כִּי יָהֵל וְיָרֵחַ יָקָר הֹלֵךְ׃ 26
27καὶ εἰ ἠπατήθη λάθρᾳ ἡ καρδία μου,
εἰ δὲ καὶ χεῖρά μου ἐπιθεὶς ἐπὶ στόματί μου ἐφίλησα,
 and if my heart was secretly deceived,
and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:
 and my heart has been secretly enticed,
and my mouth has kissed my hand;
וַיִּפְתְּ בַּסֵּתֶר לִבִּי וַתִּשַּׁק יָדִי לְפִי׃ 27
28καὶ τοῦτό μοι ἄρα ἀνομία ἡ μεγίστη λογισθείη,
ὅτι ἐψευσάμην ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ ὑψίστου.
 let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity:
for I [should] have lied against the Lord Most High.
 this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,
for I should have been false to God above.
גַּם־הוּא עָוֹן פְּלִילִי כִּי־כִחַשְׁתִּי לָאֵל מִמָּעַל׃ 28
29εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπιχαρὴς ἐγενόμην πτώματι ἐχθρῶν μου,
καὶ εἶπεν ἡ καρδία μου Εὖγε,
 And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies,
and mine heart said, Aha!
 "If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him that hated me,
or exulted when evil overtook him
אִם־אֶשְׂמַח בְּפִיד מְשַׂנְאִי וְהִתְעֹרַרְתִּי כִּי־מְצָאֹו רָע׃ 29
30ἀκούσαι ἄρα τὸ οὖς μου τὴν κατάραν μου,
θρυληθείην δὲ ἄρα ὑπὸ λαοῦ μου κακούμενος.
 let then mine ear hear my curse,
and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction.
 (I have not let my mouth sin
by asking for his life with a curse);
וְלֹא־נָתַתִּי לַחֲטֹא חִכִּי לִשְׁאֹל בְּאָלָה נַפְשֹׁו׃ 30
31εἰ δὲ καὶ πολλάκις εἶπον αἱ θεράπαιναί μου Τίς ἂν δῴη ἡμῖν τῶν σαρκῶν αὐτοῦ πλησθῆναι;
λίαν μου χρηστοῦ ὄντος·
 And if too my handmaids have often said,
Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh;
(whereas I was very kind:
 if the men of my tent have not said,
'Who is there that has not been filled with his meat?'
אִם־לֹא אָמְרוּ מְתֵי אָהֳלִי מִי־יִתֵּן מִבְּשָׂרֹו לֹא נִשְׂבָּע׃ 31
32ἔξω δὲ οὐκ ηὐλίζετο ξένος,
ἡ δὲ θύρα μου παντὶ ἐλθόντι ἀνέῳκτο.
 for the stranger did not lodge without,
and my door was opened to every one that came:)
 (the sojourner has not lodged in the street;
I have opened my doors to the wayfarer);
בַּחוּץ לֹא־יָלִין גֵּר דְּלָתַי לָאֹרַח אֶפְתָּח׃ 32
33εἰ δὲ καὶ ἁμαρτὼν ἀκουσίως ἔκρυψα τὴν ἁμαρτίαν μου,
 or if too having sinned unintentionally,
I hid my sin;
 if I have concealed my transgressions from men,
by hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
אִם־כִּסִּיתִי כְאָדָם פְּשָׁעָי לִטְמֹון בְּחֻבִּי עֲוֹנִי׃ 33
34οὐ γὰρ διετράπην πολυοχλίαν πλήθους τοῦ μὴ ἐξαγορεῦσαι ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν,
εἰ δὲ καὶ εἴασα ἀδύνατον ἐξελθεῖν θύραν μου κόλπῳ κενῷ,
 (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude,
so as not to declare boldly before them:)
and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:
 because I stood in great fear of the multitude,
and the contempt of families terrified me,
so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors -
כִּי אֶעֱרֹוץ הָמֹון רַבָּה וּבוּז־מִשְׁפָּחֹות יְחִתֵּנִי וָאֶדֹּם לֹא־אֵצֵא פָתַח׃ 34
35τίς δῴη ἀκούοντά μου;
χεῖρα δὲ κυρίου εἰ μὴ ἐδεδοίκειν,
συγγραφὴν δέ, ἣν εἶχον κατά τινος,
 (Oh that I had a hearer,)
and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord;
and [as to] the written charge which I had against any one,
 Oh, that I had one to hear me!
(Here is my signature! let the Almighty answer me!)
Oh, that I had the indictment written by my adversary!
מִי יִתֶּן־לִי שֹׁמֵעַ לִי הֶן־תָּוִי שַׁדַּי יַעֲנֵנִי
וְסֵפֶר כָּתַב אִישׁ רִיבִי׃ 		35
36ἐπ' ὤμοις ἂν περιθέμενος στέφανον ἀνεγίνωσκον,
 I would place [it] as a chaplet on my shoulders,
and read it.
 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder;
I would bind it on me as a crown;
אִם־לֹא עַל־שִׁכְמִי אֶשָּׂאֶנּוּ אֶעֶנְדֶנּוּ עֲטָרֹות לִי׃ 36
37καὶ εἰ μὴ ῥήξας αὐτὴν ἀπέδωκα,
οὐθὲν λαβὼν παρὰ χρεοφειλέτου,
 And if I did not read it and return it,
having taken nothing from the debtor:
 I would give him an account of all my steps;
like a prince I would approach him.
מִסְפַּר צְעָדַי אַגִּידֶנּוּ כְּמֹו־נָגִיד אֲקָרֲבֶנּוּ׃ 37
38εἰ ἐπ' ἐμοί ποτε ἡ γῆ ἐστέναξεν,
εἰ δὲ καὶ οἱ αὔλακες αὐτῆς ἔκλαυσαν ὁμοθυμαδόν,
 If at any time the land groaned against me,
and if its furrows mourned together;
 "If my land has cried out against me,
and its furrows have wept together;
אִם־עָלַי אַדְמָתִי תִזְעָק וְיַחַד תְּלָמֶיהָ יִבְכָּיוּן׃ 38
39εἰ δὲ καὶ τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς ἔφαγον μόνος ἄνευ τιμῆς,
εἰ δὲ καὶ ψυχὴν κυρίου τῆς γῆς ἐκβαλὼν ἐλύπησα,
 and if I ate its strength alone without price,
and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil,
by taking [aught] from [him]:
 if I have eaten its yield without payment,
and caused the death of its owners;
אִם־כֹּחָהּ אָכַלְתִּי בְלִי־כָסֶף וְנֶפֶשׁ בְּעָלֶיהָ הִפָּחְתִּי׃ 39
40ἀντὶ πυροῦ ἄρα ἐξέλθοι μοι κνίδη,
ἀντὶ δὲ κριθῆς βάτος.
Καὶ ἐπαύσατο Ιωβ ῥήμασιν.
 then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat,
and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
 let thorns grow instead of wheat,
and foul weeds instead of barley."The words of Job are ended.		תַּחַת חִטָּה יֵצֵא חֹוחַ וְתַחַת־שְׂעֹרָה בָאְשָׁה
