1βροτὸς γὰρ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος καὶ πλήρης ὀργῆς
 For a mortal born of a woman [is] short lived,
and full of wrath.
 "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
אָדָם יְלוּד אִשָּׁה קְצַר יָמִים וּשְׂבַע־רֹגֶז׃ 1
2ἢ ὥσπερ ἄνθος ἀνθῆσαν ἐξέπεσεν,
ἀπέδρα δὲ ὥσπερ σκιὰ καὶ οὐ μὴ στῇ.
 Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed;
and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue.
 He comes forth like a flower, and withers;
he flees like a shadow, and continues not.
כְּצִיץ יָצָא וַיִּמָּל וַיִּבְרַח כַּצֵּל וְלֹא יַעֲמֹוד׃ 2
3οὐχὶ καὶ τούτου λόγον ἐποιήσω,
καὶ τοῦτον ἐποίησας εἰσελθεῖν ἐν κρίματι ἐνώπιόν σου;
 Have you not taken account even of him,
and caused him to enter into judgment before you?
 And dost thou open thy eyes upon such a one
and bring him into judgment with thee?
אַף־עַל־זֶה פָּקַחְתָּ עֵינֶךָ וְאֹתִי תָבִיא בְמִשְׁפָּט עִמָּךְ׃ 3
4τίς γὰρ καθαρὸς ἔσται ἀπὸ ῥύπου; ἀλλ' οὐθείς.
 For who shall be pure from uncleanness?
not even one;
 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
There is not one.
מִי־יִתֵּן טָהֹור מִטָּמֵא לֹא אֶחָד׃ 4
5ἐὰν καὶ μία ἡμέρα ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
ἀριθμητοὶ δὲ μῆνες αὐτοῦ παρὰ σοί, εἰς χρόνον ἔθου,
καὶ οὐ μὴ ὑπερβῇ.
 if even his life should be [but] one day upon the earth:
and his months are numbered by him:
you have appointed [him] for a time, and he shall by no means exceed [it].
 Since his days are determined,
and the number of his months is with thee,
and thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass,
אִם חֲרוּצִים יָמָיו מִסְפַּר־חֳדָשָׁיו אִתָּךְ [כ= חֻקֹּו] [ק= חֻקָּיו] עָשִׂיתָ וְלֹא יַעֲבֹור׃ 5
6ἀπόστα ἀπ' αὐτοῦ, ἵνα ἡσυχάσῃ
καὶ εὐδοκήσῃ τὸν βίον ὥσπερ ὁ μισθωτός.
 Depart from him, that he may be quiet,
and take pleasure in his life, [though] as a hireling.
 look away from him, and desist,
that he may enjoy, like a hireling, his day.
שְׁעֵה מֵעָלָיו וְיֶחְדָּל עַד־יִרְצֶה כְּשָׂכִיר יֹומֹו׃ 6
7ἔστιν γὰρ δένδρῳ ἐλπίς·
ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκκοπῇ, ἔτι ἐπανθήσει,
καὶ ὁ ῥάδαμνος αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ ἐκλίπῃ·
 For there is hope for a tree, even if it should be cut down,
[that] it shall blossom again, and its branch shall not fail.
 "For there is hope for a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,
and that its shoots will not cease.
כִּי יֵשׁ לָעֵץ תִּקְוָה אִם־יִכָּרֵת וְעֹוד יַחֲלִיף וְיֹנַקְתֹּו לֹא תֶחְדָּל׃ 7
8ἐὰν γὰρ γηράσῃ ἐν γῇ ἡ ῥίζα αὐτοῦ,
ἐν δὲ πέτρᾳ τελευτήσῃ τὸ στέλεχος αὐτοῦ,
 For though its root should grow old in the earth,
and its stem die in the rock;
 Though its root grow old in the earth,
and its stump die in the ground,
אִם־יַזְקִין בָּאָרֶץ שָׁרְשֹׁו וּבֶעָפָר יָמוּת גִּזְעֹו׃ 8
9ἀπὸ ὀσμῆς ὕδατος ἀνθήσει,
ποιήσει δὲ θερισμὸν ὥσπερ νεόφυτον.
 it will blossom from the scent of water,
and will produce a crop, as one newly planted.
 yet at the scent of water it will bud
and put forth branches like a young plant.
מֵרֵיחַ מַיִם יַפְרִחַ וְעָשָׂה קָצִיר כְּמֹו־נָטַע׃ 9
10ἀνὴρ δὲ τελευτήσας ᾤχετο,
πεσὼν δὲ βροτὸς οὐκέτι ἔστιν.
 But a man that has died is utterly gone;
and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more.
 But man dies, and is laid low;
man breathes his last, and where is he?
וְגֶבֶר יָמוּת וַיֶּחֱלָשׁ וַיִּגְוַע אָדָם וְאַיֹּו׃ 10
11χρόνῳ γὰρ σπανίζεται θάλασσα,
ποταμὸς δὲ ἐρημωθεὶς ἐξηράνθη·
 For the sea wastes in [length of] time,
and a river fails and is dried up.
 As waters fail from a lake,
and a river wastes away and dries up,
אָזְלוּ־מַיִם מִנִּי־יָם וְנָהָר יֶחֱרַב וְיָבֵשׁ׃ 11
12ἄνθρωπος δὲ κοιμηθεὶς οὐ μὴ ἀναστῇ,
ἕως ἂν ὁ οὐρανὸς οὐ μὴ συρραφῇ·
 And man that has lain down [in death]
shall certainly not rise again till the heaven be dissolved,
and they shall not awake from their sleep.
 so man lies down and rises not again;
till the heavens are no more he will not awake,
or be roused out of his sleep.
וְאִישׁ שָׁכַב וְלֹא־יָקוּם עַד־בִּלְתִּי שָׁמַיִם לֹא יָקִיצוּ וְלֹא־יֵעֹרוּ מִשְּׁנָתָם׃ 12
13εἰ γὰρ ὄφελον ἐν ᾅδῃ με ἐφύλαξας,
ἔκρυψας δέ με, ἕως ἂν παύσηταί σου ἡ ὀργὴ,
καὶ τάξῃ μοι χρόνον, ἐν ᾧ μνείαν μου ποιήσῃ.
 For oh that you had kept me in the grave,
and had hidden me until your wrath should cease,
and you should set me a time in which you would remember me!
 Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol,
that thou wouldest conceal me until thy wrath be past,
that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
מִי יִתֵּן בִּשְׁאֹול תַּצְפִּנֵנִי תַּסְתִּירֵנִי עַד־שׁוּב אַפֶּךָ
תָּשִׁית לִי חֹק וְתִזְכְּרֵנִי׃		 13
14ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος,
ζήσεται συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ·
ὑπομενῶ, ἕως ἂν πάλιν γένωμαι.
 For if a man should die, shall he live [again],
having accomplished the days of his life?
I will wait till I exist again?
 If a man die, shall he live again?
All the days of my service I would wait, till my release should come.
אִם־יָמוּת גֶּבֶר הֲיִחְיֶה כָּל־יְמֵי צְבָאִי אֲיַחֵל עַד־בֹּוא חֲלִיפָתִי׃ 14
15εἶτα καλέσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι,
τὰ δὲ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου μὴ ἀποποιοῦ.
 Then shall you call, and I will listen to you:
but do not you reject the work of your hands.
 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee;
thou wouldest long for the work of thy hands.
תִּקְרָא וְאָנֹכִי אֶעֱנֶךָּ לְמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֶיךָ תִכְסֹף׃ 15
16ἠρίθμησας δέ μου τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα,
καὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ σε οὐδὲν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου·
 But you have numbered my devices:
and not one of my sins shall escape you?
 For then thou wouldest number my steps,
thou wouldest not keep watch over my sin;
כִּי־עַתָּה צְעָדַי תִּסְפֹּור לֹא־תִשְׁמֹור עַל־חַטָּאתִי׃ 16
17ἐσφράγισας δέ μου τὰς ἀνομίας ἐν βαλλαντίῳ,
ἐπεσημήνω δέ, εἴ τι ἄκων παρέβην.
 An you have sealed up my transgressions in a bag,
and marked if I have been guilty of any transgression unawares.
 my transgression would be sealed up in a bag,
and thou wouldest cover over my iniquity.
חָתֻם בִּצְרֹור פִּשְׁעִי וַתִּטְפֹּל עַל־עֲוֹנִי׃ 17
18καὶ πλὴν ὄρος πῖπτον διαπεσεῖται,
καὶ πέτρα παλαιωθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς·
 And verily a mountain falling will utterly be destroyed,
and a rock shall be worn out of its place.
 "But the mountain falls and crumbles away,
and the rock is removed from its place;
וְאוּלָם הַר־נֹופֵל יִבֹּול וְצוּר יֶעְתַּק מִמְּקֹמֹו׃ 18
19λίθους ἐλέαναν ὕδατα, καὶ κατέκλυσεν ὕδατα ὕπτια τοῦ χώματος τῆς γῆς·
καὶ ὑπομονὴν ἀνθρώπου ἀπώλεσας.
 The waters wear the stones,
and waters falling headlong [overflow] a heap of the earth:
and you destroy the hope of man.
 the waters wear away the stones;
the torrents wash away the soil of the earth;
so thou destroyest the hope of man.
אֲבָנִים שָׁחֲקוּ מַיִם תִּשְׁטֹף־סְפִיחֶיהָ עֲפַר־אָרֶץ
וְתִקְוַת אֱנֹושׁ הֶאֱבַדְתָּ׃ 		19
20ὦσας αὐτὸν εἰς τέλος, καὶ ᾤχετο·
ἐπέστησας αὐτῷ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας·
 You drive him to an end, and he is gone:
you set your face against him, and send him away;
 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passes;
thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
תִּתְקְפֵהוּ לָנֶצַח וַיַּהֲלֹךְ מְשַׁנֶּה פָנָיו וַתְּשַׁלְּחֵהוּ׃ 20
21πολλῶν δὲ γενομένων τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ οὐκ οἶδεν,
ἐὰν δὲ ὀλίγοι γένωνται, οὐκ ἐπίσταται·
 and though his children be multiplied, he knows [it] not;
and if they be few, he is not aware.
 His sons come to honor, and he does not know it;
they are brought low, and he perceives it not.
יִכְבְּדוּ בָנָיו וְלֹא יֵדָע וְיִצְעֲרוּ וְלֹא־יָבִין לָמֹו׃ 21
22ἀλλ' ἢ αἱ σάρκες αὐτοῦ ἤλγησαν,
ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπένθησεν.
 But his flesh is in pain,
and his soul mourns.
 He feels only the pain of his own body,
and he mourns only for himself."		אַךְ־בְּשָׂרֹו עָלָיו יִכְאָב וְנַפְשֹׁו עָלָיו תֶּאֱבָל׃ ף 22
