1Ἄνθρωπός τις ἦν ἐν χώρᾳ τῇ Αυσίτιδι, ᾧ ὄνομα Ιωβ· καὶ ἦν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ἀληθινός, ἄμεμπτος, δίκαιος, θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος. There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name [was] Job;
and than man was true, blameless, righteous, [and] godly, abstaining from everything evil.
JOB. Satan tests JOB. Jb.1.1-12There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God, and turned away from evil.אִישׁ הָיָה בְאֶרֶץ־עוּץ אִיֹּוב שְׁמֹו וְהָיָה הָאִישׁ הַהוּא תָּם וְיָשָׁר וִירֵא אֱלֹהִים וְסָר מֵרָע׃ 1
2ἐγένοντο δὲ αὐτῷ υἱοὶ ἑπτὰ καὶ θυγατέρες τρεῖς. And he had seven sons and three daughters.
 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.וַיִּוָּלְדוּ לֹו שִׁבְעָה בָנִים וְשָׁלֹושׁ בָּנֹות׃ 2
3καὶ ἦν τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πρόβατα ἑπτακισχίλια, κάμηλοι τρισχίλιαι, ζεύγη βοῶν πεντακόσια, ὄνοι θήλειαι νομάδες πεντακόσιαι. καὶ ὑπηρεσία πολλὴ σφόδρα καὶ ἔργα μεγάλα ἦν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἦν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος εὐγενὴς τῶν ἀφ' ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν. And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep,
three thousand camels,
five hundred yoke of oxen,
five hundred she-asses in the pastures,
and a very great household,
and he had a great husbandry on the earth;
and that man was [most] noble of the [men] of the east.
 He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.וַיְהִי מִקְנֵהוּ שִׁבְעַת אַלְפֵי־צֹאן וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אַלְפֵי גְמַלִּים וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאֹות צֶמֶד־בָּקָר וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאֹות אֲתֹונֹות וַעֲבֻדָּה רַבָּה מְאֹד וַיְהִי הָאִישׁ הַהוּא גָּדֹול מִכָּל־בְּנֵי־קֶדֶם׃ 3
4συμπορευόμενοι δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἐποιοῦσαν πότον καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, συμπαραλαμβάνοντες ἅμα καὶ τὰς τρεῖς ἀδελφὰς αὐτῶν ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν μετ' αὐτῶν. And his sons visiting one another prepared a banquet every day,
taking with them also their there sisters to eat and drink with them.
 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each on his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.וְהָלְכוּ בָנָיו וְעָשׂוּ מִשְׁתֶּה בֵּית אִישׁ יֹומֹו וְשָׁלְחוּ וְקָרְאוּ לִשְׁלֹשֶׁת [כ= אַחְיֹתֵיהֶם] [ק= אַחְיֹותֵיהֶם] לֶאֱכֹל וְלִשְׁתֹּות עִמָּהֶם׃ 4
5καὶ ὡς ἂν συνετελέσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ πότου, ἀπέστελλεν Ιωβ καὶ ἐκαθάριζεν αὐτοὺς ἀνιστάμενος τὸ πρωῒ, καὶ προσέφερεν περὶ αὐτῶν θυσίας κατὰ τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν καὶ μόσχον ἕνα περὶ ἁμαρτίας περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν αὐτῶν· ἔλεγεν γὰρ Ιωβ Μήποτε οἱ υἱοί μου ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτῶν κακὰ ἐνενόησαν πρὸς θεόν. οὕτως οὖν ἐποίει Ιωβ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας. And when the days of the banquet were completed,
Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning,
and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number,
and one calf for a sin-offering for their souls:
for Job said, Lest my sons, perhaps, have thought evil in their minds against God.
Thus, then Job did continually.
 And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed Godוַיְהִי כִּי הִקִּיפוּ יְמֵי הַמִּשְׁתֶּה וַיִּשְׁלַח אִיֹּוב וַיְקַדְּשֵׁם וְהִשְׁכִּים בַּבֹּקֶר וְהֶעֱלָה עֹלֹות מִסְפַּר כֻּלָּם כִּי אָמַר אִיֹּוב אוּלַי חָטְאוּ בָנַי וּבֵרֲכוּ אֱלֹהִים בִּלְבָבָם כָּכָה יַעֲשֶׂה אִיֹּוב כָּל־הַיָּמִים׃ ף 5
6Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθον οἱ ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ παραστῆναι ἐνώπιον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ ὁ διάβολος ἦλθεν μετ' αὐτῶν. And it came to pass on a day, that behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord,
and the devil came with them.
 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.וַיְהִי הַיֹּום וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל־יְהוָה וַיָּבֹוא גַם־הַשָּׂטָן בְּתֹוכָם׃ 6
7καὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ διαβόλῳ Πόθεν παραγέγονας; καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ διάβολος τῷ κυρίῳ εἶπεν Περιελθὼν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσας τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανὸν πάρειμι. And the Lord said to the devil,
Whence are you come?
And the devil answered the Lord,
and said, I am come from compassing the earth,
and walking up and down in the world.
 The LORD said to Satan, "Whence have you come?" Satan answered the LORD, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it."וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן מֵאַיִן תָּבֹא וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־יְהוָה וַיֹּאמַר מִשּׁוּט בָּאָרֶץ וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּהּ׃ 7
8καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος Προσέσχες τῇ διανοίᾳ σου κατὰ τοῦ παιδός μου Ιωβ, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατ' αὐτὸν τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἄνθρωπος ἄμεμπτος, ἀληθινός, θεοσεβής, ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηροῦ πράγματος; And the Lord said to him,
Have you diligently considered my servant Job,
that there is none like him on the earth,
a man blameless, true, godly,
abstaining from everything evil?
 And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?"וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן הֲשַׂמְתָּ לִבְּךָ עַל־עַבְדִּי אִיֹּוב כִּי אֵין כָּמֹהוּ בָּאָרֶץ אִישׁ תָּם וְיָשָׁר יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים וְסָר מֵרָע׃ 8
9ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ὁ διάβολος καὶ εἶπεν ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου Μὴ δωρεὰν σέβεται Ιωβ τὸν θεόν; Then the devil answered,
and said before the Lord,
Does Job worship the Lord for nothing?
 Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nought?וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־יְהוָה וַיֹּאמַר הַחִנָּם יָרֵא אִיֹּוב אֱלֹהִים׃ 9
10οὐ σὺ περιέφραξας τὰ ἔξω αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔσω τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔξω πάντων τῶν ὄντων αὐτῷ κύκλῳ; τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ εὐλόγησας καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ἐποίησας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. Have you not made a hedge about him,
and about his household,
and all his possessions round about?
and have you not blessed the works of his hands,
and multiplied his cattle upon the land?
 Hast thou not put a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.הֲלֹא־[כ= אַתְּ] [ק= אַתָּה] שַׂכְתָּ בַעֲדֹו וּבְעַד־בֵּיתֹו וּבְעַד כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לֹו מִסָּבִיב מַעֲשֵׂה יָדָיו בֵּרַכְתָּ וּמִקְנֵהוּ פָּרַץ בָּאָרֶץ׃ 10
11ἀλλὰ ἀπόστειλον τὴν χεῖρά σου καὶ ἅψαι πάντων, ὧν ἔχει· εἰ μὴν εἰς πρόσωπόν σε εὐλογήσει. But put forth your hand,
and touch all that he has:
verily he will bless you to [your] face.
 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse thee to thy face."וְאוּלָם שְׁלַח־נָא יָדְךָ וְגַע בְּכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לֹו אִם־לֹא עַל־פָּנֶיךָ יְבָרֲךֶךָּ׃ 11
12τότε εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ διαβόλῳ Ἰδοὺ πάντα, ὅσα ἔστιν αὐτῷ, δίδωμι ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ἀλλὰ αὐτοῦ μὴ ἅψῃ. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ διάβολος παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου. Then the Lord said to the devil,
Behold, I give into your hand all that he has,
but touch not himself.
So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.
 And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן הִנֵּה כָל־אֲשֶׁר־לֹו בְּיָדֶךָ רַק אֵלָיו אַל־תִּשְׁלַח יָדֶךָ וַיֵּצֵא הַשָּׂטָן מֵעִם פְּנֵי יְהוָה׃ 12
13Καὶ ἦν ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, οἱ υἱοὶ Ιωβ καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτοῦ ἔπινον οἶνον ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου. And it came to pass on a certain day, that Job's sons and his daughters were drinking wine in the house of their elder brother.
Job's children & wealth are destroyed. Jb.1.13-22Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;וַיְהִי הַיֹּום וּבָנָיו וּבְנֹתָיו אֹכְלִים וְשֹׁתִים יַיִן בְּבֵית אֲחִיהֶם הַבְּכֹור׃ 13
14καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος ἦλθεν πρὸς Ιωβ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τὰ ζεύγη τῶν βοῶν ἠροτρία, καὶ αἱ θήλειαι ὄνοι ἐβόσκοντο ἐχόμεναι αὐτῶν· And, behold, there came a messenger to job,
and said to him, The yokes of oxen were ploughing,
and the she-asses were feeding near them;
 and there came a messenger to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them;וּמַלְאָךְ בָּא אֶל־אִיֹּוב וַיֹּאמַר הַבָּקָר הָיוּ חֹרְשֹׁות וְהָאֲתֹנֹות רֹעֹות עַל־יְדֵיהֶם׃ 14
15καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ αἰχμαλωτεύοντες ᾐχμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις· σωθεὶς δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι. and the spoilers came and took them for a prey,
and slew the servants with the sword;
and I having escaped alone am come to tell you.
 and the Sabe'ans fell upon them and took them, and slew the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."וַתִּפֹּל שְׁבָא וַתִּקָּחֵם וְאֶת־הַנְּעָרִים הִכּוּ לְפִי־חָרֶב וָאִמָּלְטָה רַק־אֲנִי לְבַדִּי לְהַגִּיד לָךְ׃ 15
16Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ιωβ Πῦρ ἔπεσεν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέκαυσεν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ τοὺς ποιμένας κατέφαγεν ὁμοίως· καὶ σωθεὶς ἐγὼ μόνος ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι. While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger,
and said to Job, Fire has fallen from heaven, and burnt up the sheep, and devoured the shepherds like wise;
and I having escaped alone am come to tell you.
 While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you."עֹוד זֶה מְדַבֵּר וְזֶה בָּא וַיֹּאמַר
    אֵשׁ אֱלֹהִים נָפְלָה מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם וַתִּבְעַר בַּצֹּאן וּבַנְּעָרִים וַתֹּאכְלֵם
    וָאִמָּלְטָה רַק־אֲנִי לְבַדִּי לְהַגִּיד לָךְ׃
16
17Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἦλθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ιωβ Οἱ ἱππεῖς ἐποίησαν ἡμῖν κεφαλὰς τρεῖς καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν τὰς καμήλους καὶ ᾐχμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς, καὶ τοὺς παῖδας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι. While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger,
and said to Job, The horsemen formed three companies against us,
and surrounded the camels, and took them for a prey,
and slew the servants with the sword;
and I only escaped,
and am come to tell you.
 While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "The Chalde'ans formed three companies, and made a raid upon the camels and took them, and slew the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."עֹוד זֶה מְדַבֵּר וְזֶה בָּא וַיֹּאמַר
כַּשְׂדִּים שָׂמוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה רָאשִׁים וַיִּפְשְׁטוּ עַל־הַגְּמַלִּים וַיִּקָּחוּם
וְאֶת־הַנְּעָרִים הִכּוּ לְפִי־חָרֶב
וָאִמָּלְטָה רַק־אֲנִי לְבַדִּי לְהַגִּיד לָךְ׃ 		17
18Ἔτι τούτου λαλοῦντος ἄλλος ἄγγελος ἔρχεται λέγων τῷ Ιωβ Τῶν υἱῶν σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου ἐσθιόντων καὶ πινόν των παρὰ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτῶν τῶν πρεσβυτέρῳ, While he is yet speaking, another messenger comes,
saying to Job, While your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking with their elder brother,
 While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;עַד זֶה מְדַבֵּר וְזֶה בָּא וַיֹּאמַר
בָּנֶיךָ וּבְנֹותֶיךָ אֹכְלִים וְשֹׁתִים יַיִן בְּבֵית אֲחִיהֶם הַבְּכֹור׃ 		18
19ἐξαίφνης πνεῦμα μέγα ἐπῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς ἐρήμου καὶ ἥψατο τῶν τεσσάρων γωνιῶν τῆς οἰκίας· καὶ ἔπεσεν ἡ οἰκία ἐπὶ τὰ παιδία σου, καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν· ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἦλθον τοῦ ἀπαγγεῖλαί σοι. suddenly a great wind came on from the desert, and caught the four corners of the house,
and the house fell upon your children, and they are dead;
and I have escaped alone, and am come to tell you.
 and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."וְהִנֵּה רוּחַ גְּדֹולָה בָּאָה מֵעֵבֶר הַמִּדְבָּר
וַיִּגַּע בְּאַרְבַּע פִּנֹּות הַבַּיִת וַיִּפֹּל עַל־הַנְּעָרִים וַיָּמוּתוּ
וָאִמָּלְטָה רַק־אֲנִי לְבַדִּי לְהַגִּיד לָךְ׃ 		19
20Οὕτως ἀναστὰς Ιωβ διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκείρατο τὴν κόμην τῆς κεφαλῆς, αὐτοῦ καὶ πεσὼν χαμαὶ προσεκύνησεν καὶ εἶπεν So Job arose, and rent his garments,
and shaved the hair of his head,
and fell on the earth, and worshipped, and said,
 Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell upon the ground, and worshipped.וַיָּקָם אִיֹּוב וַיִּקְרַע אֶת־מְעִלֹו וַיָּגָז אֶת־רֹאשֹׁו וַיִּפֹּל אַרְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּחוּ׃ 20
21Αὐτὸς γυμνὸς ἐξῆλθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου· γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἐκεῖ. ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν, ὁ κύριος ἀφείλατο· ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ ἔδοξεν, οὕτως καὶ ἐγένετο· εἴη τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου εὐλογημένον. I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb,
and naked shall I return thither;
the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away:
as it seemed good to the Lord,
so has it come to pass;
blessed be the name of the Lord.
 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return; the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."וַיֹּאמֶר
    עָרֹם [כ= יָצָתִי] [ק= יָצָאתִי] מִבֶּטֶן אִמִּי וְעָרֹם אָשׁוּב שָׁמָה
    יְהוָה נָתַן וַיהוָה לָקָח יְהִי שֵׁם יְהוָה מְבֹרָךְ׃
21
22Ἑν τούτοις πᾶσιν τοῖς συμβεβηκόσιν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν ἥμαρτεν Ιωβ ἐναντίον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν ἀφροσύνην τῷ θεῷ. In all these events that befell him Job sinned not at all before the Lord,
and did not impute folly to God.
 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.בְּכָל־זֹאת לֹא־חָטָא אִיֹּוב וְלֹא־נָתַן תִּפְלָה לֵאלֹהִים׃ ף 22
