| Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει | Job. Jb.16.1-17.16Job. Jb.16.1-17.16 | But Job answered and said, | |
| Ἀκήκοα τοιαῦτα πολλά· παρακλήτορες κακῶν πάντες. | I have heard many such things: poor comforters are you all. | ||
| τί γάρ; μὴ τάξις ἐστὶν ῥήμασιν πνεύματος; ἢ τί παρενοχλήσει σοι, ὅτι ἀποκρίνῃ; | What! is there any reason in vain words? or what will hinder you from answering? | ||
| κἀγὼ καθ' ὑμᾶς λαλήσω, εἰ ὑπέκειτό γε ἡ ψυχὴ ὑμῶν ἀντὶ τῆς ἐμῆς· | I also will speak as you [do]: if indeed your soul were in my [soul's] stead, | ||
| εἶτ ἐναλοῦμαι ὑμῖν ῥήμασιν, κινήσω δὲ καθ' ὑμῶν κεφαλήν· | then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you. | ||
| ἐὰν γὰρ λαλήσω, οὐκ ἀλγήσω τὸ τραῦμα· ἐὰν δὲ καὶ σιωπήσω, τί ἔλαττον τρωθήσομαι; | For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound: and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less? | ||
| νῦν δὲ κατάκοπόν με πεποίηκεν, μωρόν, σεσηπότα, | But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and you have laid hold of me. | ||
| καὶ ἐπελάβου μου, εἰς μαρτύριον ἐγενήθη· καὶ ἀνέστη ἐν ἐμοὶ τὸ ψεῦδός μου, κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου ἀνταπεκρίθη. | My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face. | ||
| ὀργῇ χρησάμενος κατέβαλέν με, ἔβρυξεν ἐπ' ἐμὲ τοὺς ὀδόντας, βέλη πειρατῶν αὐτοῦ ἐπ' ἐμοὶ ἔπεσεν. | In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth upon me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen upon me. | ||
| ἀκίσιν ὀφθαλμῶν ἐνήλατο, ὀξεῖ ἔπαισέν με εἰς σιαγόνα, ὁμοθυμαδὸν δὲ κατέδραμον ἐπ' ἐμοί. | He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp [spear] he has smitten me [down] upon my knees; and they have run upon me with one accord. | ||
| παρέδωκεν γάρ με ὁ κύριος εἰς χεῖρας ἀδίκου, ἐπὶ δὲ ἀσεβέσιν ἔρριψέν με· | For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me upon the ungodly. | ||
| εἰρηνεύοντα διεσκέδασέν με, λαβών με τῆς κόμης διέτιλεν, κατέστησέν με ὥσπερ σκοπόν. | When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark. | ||
| ἐκύκλωσάν με λόγχαις βάλλοντες εἰς νεφρούς μου οὐ φειδόμενοι, ἐξέχεαν εἰς τὴν γῆν τὴν χολήν μου· | They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my reins: without sparing [me] they poured out my gall upon the ground. | ||
| κατέβαλόν με πτῶμα ἐπὶ πτώματι, ἔδραμον πρός με δυνάμενοι. | They overthrew me with fall upon fall: they ran upon me in [their] might. | ||
| σάκκον ἔρραψα ἐπὶ βύρσης μου, τὸ δὲ σθένος μου ἐν γῇ ἐσβέσθη. | They sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground. | ||
| ἡ γαστήρ μου συγκέκαυται ἀπὸ κλαυθμοῦ, ἐπὶ δὲ βλεφάροις μου σκιά. | My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids. | ||
| ἄδικον δὲ οὐδὲν ἦν ἐν χερσίν μου, εὐχὴ δέ μου καθαρά. | Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure. | ||
| γῆ, μὴ ἐπικαλύψῃς ἐφ' αἵματι τῆς σαρκός μου, μηδὲ εἴη τόπος τῇ κραυγῇ μου. | Earth, cover not over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place. | ||
| καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὁ μάρτυς μου, ὁ δὲ συνίστωρ μου ἐν ὑψίστοις. | And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. | ||
| ἀφίκοιτό μου ἡ δέησις πρὸς Κύριον, ἔναντι δὲ αὐτοῦ στάζοι μου ὁ ὀφθαλμός. | Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let mine eye weep before him. | ||
| εἴη δὲ ἔλεγχος ἀνδρὶ ἔναντι Κυρίου, καὶ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου τῷ πλησίον αὐτοῦ. | Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even [as] the son of man with his neighbor! | ||
| ἔτη δὲ ἀριθμητὰ ἥκασιν, ὁδῷ δέ, ᾗ οὐκ ἐπαναστραφήσομαι, πορεύσομαι. | But my years are numbered and [their end] come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return. | ||
| ὀλέκομαι πνεύματι φερόμενος, δέομαι δὲ ταφῆς καὶ οὐ τυγχάνω. | I perish, carried away by the wind, and I seek for burial, and obtain [it] not. | ||
| λίσσομαι κάμνων, καὶ τί ποιήσας; | Weary I intreat; and what have I done? and strangers have stolen my goods. | ||
| ἔκλεψαν δέ μου τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ἀλλότριοι. τίς ἐστιν οὗτος; τῇ χειρί μου συνδεθήτω. | Who is this? let him join hands with me. | ||
| ὅτι καρδίαν αὐτῶν ἔκρυψας ἀπὸ φρονήσεως, διὰ τοῦτο οὐ μὴ ὑψώσῃς αὐτούς. | For you have hid their heart from wisdom; therefore you shall not exalt them. | ||
| τῇ μερίδι ἀναγγελεῖ κακίας, ὀφθαλμοὶ δέ μου ἐφ' υἱοῖς ἐτάκησαν. | He shall promise mischief to [his] companions: but [their] eyes have failed for [their] children. | ||
| ἔθου δέ με θρύλημα ἐν ἔθνεσιν, γέλως δὲ αὐτοῖς ἀπέβην· | But you has made me a byword amount the nations, and I am become a scorn to them. | ||
| πεπώρωνται γὰρ ἀπὸ ὀργῆς οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου, πεπολιόρκημαι μεγάλως ὑπὸ πάντων. | For my eyes are dimmed through pain; I have been grievously beset by all. | ||
| θαῦμα ἔσχεν ἀληθινοὺς ἐπὶ τούτῳ· δίκαιος δὲ ἐπὶ παρανόμῳ ἐπανασταίη· | Wonder has seized true men upon this; and let the just rise up against the transgressor. | ||
| σχοίη δὲ πιστὸς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδόν, καθαρὸς δὲ χεῖρας ἀναλάβοι θάρσος. | But let the faithful hold on his own way, and let him that is pure of hands take courage. | ||
| οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ πάντες ἐρείδετε, καὶ δεῦτε δή· οὐ γὰρ εὑρίσκω ἐν ὑμῖν ἀληθές. | Howbeit, do you all strengthen [yourselves] and come now, for I do not find truth in you. | ||
| αἱ ἡμέραι μου παρῆλθον ἐν βρόμῳ, ἐρράγη δὲ τὰ ἄρθρα τῆς καρδίας μου. | My days have passed in groaning, and my heart-strings are broken. | ||
| νύκτα εἰς ἡμέραν ἔθηκαν, φῶς ἐγγὺς ἀπὸ προσώπου σκότους. | I have turned the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. | ||
| ἐὰν γὰρ ὑπομείνω, ᾅδης μου ὁ οἶκος, ἐν δὲ γνόφῳ ἔστρωταί μου ἡ στρωμνή. | For if I remain, Hades is my habitation: and my bed has been made in darkness | ||
| θάνατον ἐπεκαλεσάμην πατέρα μου εἶναι, μητέρα δέ μου καὶ ἀδελφὴν σαπρίαν. | I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption [to be] my mother and sister. | ||
| ποῦ οὖν μου ἔτι ἐστὶν ἡ ἐλπίς; ἦ τὰ ἀγαθά μου ὄψομαι; | Where then is yet my hope? or [where] shall I see my good? | ||
| ἦ μετ' ἐμοῦ εἰς ᾅδην καταβήσονται, ἢ ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἐπὶ χώματος καταβησόμεθα; | Will they go down with me to Hades, or shall we go down together to the tomb? | ||
