| Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει | Job. Jb.12.1-14.22Job. Jb.12.1-14.22 | And Job answered and said, | |
| Εἶτα ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἄνθρωποι· ἦ μεθ' ὑμῶν τελευτήσει σοφία. | So then you [alone] are men, and wisdom shall die with you? | ||
| κἀμοὶ μὲν καρδία καθ' ὑμᾶς ἐστιν. | [But] I also have a heart as well as you. | ||
| δίκαιος γὰρ ἀνὴρ καὶ ἄμεμπτος ἐγενήθη εἰς χλεύασμα· | For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery. | ||
| εἰς χρόνον γὰρ τακτὸν ἡτοίμαστο πεσεῖν ὑπὸ ἄλλους, οἴκους τε αὐτοῦ ἐκπορθεῖσθαι ὑπὸ ἀνόμων. | For it had been ordained that he should fall under others at the appointed time, and that his houses should be spoiled by transgressors: | ||
| οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ μηδεὶς πεποιθέτω πονηρὸς ὢν ἀθῷος ἔσεσθαι, ὅσοι παροργίζουσιν τὸν κύριον, ὡς οὐχὶ καὶ ἔτασις αὐτῶν ἔσται. | let not however any one trust that, being evil, he shall be [held] guiltless, even as many as provoke the Lord, as if there were indeed to be no inquisition [made] of them. | ||
| ἀλλὰ δὴ ἐπερώτησον τετράποδα ἐάν σοι εἴπωσιν, πετεινὰ δὲ οὐρανοῦ ἐάν σοι ἀπαγγείλωσιν· | But ask now the beasts, if they may speak to you; and the birds of the air, if they may declare to you. | ||
| ἐκδιήγησαι δὲ γῇ ἐάν σοι φράσῃ, καὶ ἐξηγήσονταί σοι οἱ ἰχθύες τῆς θαλάσσης. | Tell the earth, if it may speak to you: and the fishes of the sea shall explain to you. | ||
| 13τίς οὐκ ἔγνω ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις ὅτι χεὶρ κυρίου ἐποίησεν ταῦτα; | Who then has not known in all these things, that the hand of the Lord has made them? | ||
| εἰ μὴ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ψυχὴ πάντων τῶν ζώντων καὶ πνεῦμα παντὸς ἀνθρώπου; | Whereas the life of all living things is in his hand, and the breath of every man. | ||
| οὖς μὲν γὰρ ῥήματα διακρίνει, λάρυγξ δὲ σῖτα γεύεται. | For the ear tries words, and the palate tastes meats. | ||
| ἐν πολλῷ χρόνῳ σοφία, ἐν δὲ πολλῷ βίῳ ἐπιστήμη. | In length of time is wisdom, and in long life knowledge. | ||
| παρ' αὐτῷ σοφία καὶ δύναμις, αὐτῷ βουλὴ καὶ σύνεσις. | With him are wisdom and power, with him counsel and understanding. | ||
| ἐὰν καταβάλῃ, τίς οἰκοδομήσει; ἐὰν κλείσῃ κατὰ ἀνθρώπων, τίς ἀνοίξει; | If he should cast down, who will build up? if he should shut up against man, who shall open? | ||
| ἐὰν κωλύσῃ τὸ ὥδωρ, ξηρανεῖ τὴν γῆν· ἐὰν δὲ ἐπαφῇ, ἀπώλεσεν αὐτὴν καταστρέψας. | If he should withhold the water, he will dry the earth: and if he should let it loose, he overthrows and destroys it. | ||
| παρ' αὐτῷ κράτος καὶ ἰσχύς, αὐτῷ ἐπιστήμη καὶ σύνεσις. | With him are strength and power: he has knowledge and understanding. | ||
| διάγων βουλευτὰς αἰχμαλώτους, κριτὰς δὲ γῆς ἐξέστησεν. | He leads counsellors away captive, and maddens the judges of the earth. | ||
| καθιζάνων βασιλεῖς ἐπὶ θρόνους καὶ περιέδησεν ζώνῃ ὀσφύας αὐτῶν. | He seats kings upon thrones, and girds their loins with a girdle. | ||
| ἐξαποστέλλων ἱερεῖς αἰχμαλώτους, δυνάστας δὲ γῆς κατέστρεψεν. | He sends away priests into captivity, and overthrows the mighty ones of the earth. | ||
| διαλλάσσων χείλη πιστῶν, σύνεσιν δὲ πρεσβυτέρων ἔγνω. | He changes the lips of the trusty, and he knows the understanding of the elders. | ||
| ἐκχέων ἀτιμίαν ἐπ' ἄρχοντας, ταπεινοὺς δὲ ἰάσατο. | He pours dishonour upon princes, and heals the lowly. | ||
| ἀνακαλύπτων βαθέα ἐκ σκότους, ἐξήγαγεν δὲ εἰς φῶς σκιὰν θανάτου. | Revealing deep things out of darkness: and he has brought into light the shadow of death. | ||
| πλανῶν ἔθνη καὶ ἀπολλύων αὐτά, καταστρωννύων ἔθνη καὶ καθοδηγῶν αὐτά. | Causing the nations to wander, and destroying them: overthrowing the nations, and leading them [away]. | ||
| διαλλάσσων καρδίας ἀρχόντων γῆς, ἐπλάνησεν δὲ αὐτοὺς ὁδῷ, ᾗ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν· | Perplexing the minds of the princes of the earth: and he causes them to wander in a way, they have not known, [saying], | ||
| ψηλαφήσαισαν σκότος καὶ μὴ φῶς, πλανηθείησαν δὲ ὥσπερ ὁ μεθύων. | Let them grope [in] darkness, and [let there be] no light, and let them wander as a drunken man. | ||
| ἰδοὺ ταῦτα ἑώρακέν μου ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς καὶ ἀκήκοέν μου τὸ οὖς· | Behold, mine eye has seen these things, and mine ear has heard [them]. | ||
| καὶ οἶδα ὅσα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε, καὶ οὐκ ἀσυνετώτερός εἰμι ὑμῶν. | And I know all that you too know; and I have not less understanding than you. | ||
| οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλ' ἐγὼ πρὸς κύριον λαλήσω, ἐλέγξω δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ἐὰν βούληται. | Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. | ||
| ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε ἰατροὶ ἄδικοι καὶ ἰαταὶ κακῶν πάντες. | But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. | ||
| εἴη δὲ ὑμῖν κωφεῦσαι, καὶ ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς σοφίαν. | But would that you were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. | ||
| ἀκούσατε ἔλεγχον στόματός μου, κρίσιν δὲ χειλέων μου προσέχετε. | But hear you the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. | ||
| πότερον οὐκ ἔναντι κυρίου λαλεῖτε, ἔναντι δὲ αὐτοῦ φθέγγεσθε δόλον; | Do you not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him? | ||
| ἦ ὑποστελεῖσθε; ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτοὶ κριταὶ γένεσθε. | Or will you draw back? nay do, you yourselves be judges. | ||
| καλόν γε, ἐὰν ἐξιχνιάσῃ ὑμᾶς· εἰ γὰρ τὰ πάντα ποιοῦντες προστεθήσεσθε αὐτῷ, | For [it were] well if he would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things [in your power] you should attach yourselves to him, | ||
| οὐθὲν ἧττον ἐλέγξει ὑμᾶς· εἰ δὲ καὶ κρυφῇ πρόσωπα θαυμάσετε, | he will not reprove you at all the less: but if moreover you should secretly respect persons, | ||
| πότερον οὐχὶ δεινὰ αὐτοῦ στροβήσει ὑμᾶς, φόβος δὲ παρ' αὐτοῦ ἐπιπεσεῖται ὑμῖν; | shall not his whirlpool sweep you round, and terror from him fall upon you? | ||
| ἀποβήσεται δὲ ὑμῶν τὸ ἀγαυρίαμα ἴσα σποδῷ, τὸ δὲ σῶμα πήλινον. | And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body [like a body] of clay. | ||
| κωφεύσατε, ἵνα λαλήσω καὶ ἀναπαύσωμαι θυμοῦ | Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from [mine] anger, | ||
| ἀναλαβὼν τὰς σάρκας μου τοῖς ὀδοῦσιν, ψυχὴν δέ μου θήσω ἐν χειρί. | while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. | ||
| ἐάν με χειρώσηται ὁ δυνάστης, ἐπεὶ καὶ ἦρκται, ἦ μὴν λαλήσω καὶ ἐλέγξω ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ· | Though the Mighty One should lay hand upon me, forasmuch as he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him. | ||
| καὶ τοῦτό μοι ἀποβήσεται εἰς σωτηρίαν, οὐ γὰρ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ δόλος εἰσελεύσεται. | And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. | ||
| ἀκούσατε ἀκούσατε τὰ ῥήματά μου· ἀναγγελῶ γὰρ ὑμῶν ἀκουόντων. | Hear, hear you my words, for I will declare in your hearing. | ||
| ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐγγύς εἰμι τοῦ κρίματός μου, οἶδα ἐγὼ ὅτι δίκαιος ἀναφανοῦμαι. | Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just. | ||
| τίς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ κριθησόμενός μοι; ὅτι νῦν κωφεύσω καὶ ἐκλείψω. | For who is he that shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire? | ||
| δυεῖν δέ μοι χρήσῃ· τότε ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου οὐ κρυβήσομαι·507 | But grant me two things: then I will not hide myself from your face. | ||
| τὴν χεῖρα ἀπ' ἐμοῦ ἀπέχου, καὶ ὁ φόβος σου μή με καταπλησσέτω. | Withhold [thine] hand from me: and let not your fear terrify me. | ||
| εἶτα καλέσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι· ἢ λαλήσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι δώσω ἀνταπόκρισιν. | Then shall you call, and I will listen to you: or you shall speak, and I will give you an answer. | ||
| πόσαι εἰσὶν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι μου καὶ αἱ ἀνομίαι μου; δίδαξόν με τίνες εἰσίν. | How many are my sins and my transgressions? teach me what they are. | ||
| διὰ τί ἀπ' ἐμοῦ κρύπτῃ, ἥγησαι δέ με ὑπεναντίον σοι; | Why do you hide yourself from me. Am I your enemy? | ||
| ἦ ὡς φύλλον κινούμενον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου εὐλαβηθήσῃ, ἢ ὡς χόρτῳ φερομένῳ ὑπὸ πνεύματος ἀντίκεισαί μοι; | Will you be startled [at me], as [at] a leaf shaken by the wind? or will you set yourself against me as against grass borne upon the breeze? | ||
| ὅτι κατέγραψας κατ' ἐμοῦ κακά, περιέθηκας δέ μοι νεότητος ἁμαρτίας, | for you have written evil things against me, and you have compassed me with the sins of my youth. | ||
| ἔθου δέ μου τὸν πόδα ἐν κωλύματι, ἐφύλαξας δέ μου πάντα τὰ ἔργα, εἰς δὲ ῥίζας τῶν ποδῶν μου ἀφίκου· | And you have placed my foot in the stocks; and you have watched all my works, and have penetrated my heels. | ||
| ὃ παλαιοῦται ἴσα ἀσκῷ, ἢ ὥσπερ ἱμάτιον σητόβρωτον. | [I am as] that which waxes old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment. | ||
| βροτὸς γὰρ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος καὶ πλήρης ὀργῆς | For a mortal born of a woman [is] short lived, and full of wrath. | ||
| ἢ ὥσπερ ἄνθος ἀνθῆσαν ἐξέπεσεν, ἀπέδρα δὲ ὥσπερ σκιὰ καὶ οὐ μὴ στῇ. | Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed; and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue. | ||
| οὐχὶ καὶ τούτου λόγον ἐποιήσω, καὶ τοῦτον ἐποίησας εἰσελθεῖν ἐν κρίματι ἐνώπιόν σου; | Have you not taken account even of him, and caused him to enter into judgment before you? | ||
| τίς γὰρ καθαρὸς ἔσται ἀπὸ ῥύπου; ἀλλ' οὐθείς. | For who shall be pure from uncleanness? not even one; | ||
| ἐὰν καὶ μία ἡμέρα ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἀριθμητοὶ δὲ μῆνες αὐτοῦ παρὰ σοί, εἰς χρόνον ἔθου, καὶ οὐ μὴ ὑπερβῇ. | if even his life should be [but] one day upon the earth: and his months are numbered by him: you have appointed [him] for a time, and he shall by no means exceed [it]. | ||
| ἀπόστα ἀπ' αὐτοῦ, ἵνα ἡσυχάσῃ καὶ εὐδοκήσῃ τὸν βίον ὥσπερ ὁ μισθωτός. | Depart from him, that he may be quiet, and take pleasure in his life, [though] as a hireling. | ||
| ἔστιν γὰρ δένδρῳ ἐλπίς· ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκκοπῇ, ἔτι ἐπανθήσει, καὶ ὁ ῥάδαμνος αὐτοῦ οὐ μὴ ἐκλίπῃ· | For there is hope for a tree, even if it should be cut down, [that] it shall blossom again, and its branch shall not fail. | ||
| ἐὰν γὰρ γηράσῃ ἐν γῇ ἡ ῥίζα αὐτοῦ, ἐν δὲ πέτρᾳ τελευτήσῃ τὸ στέλεχος αὐτοῦ, | For though its root should grow old in the earth, and its stem die in the rock; | ||
| ἀπὸ ὀσμῆς ὕδατος ἀνθήσει, ποιήσει δὲ θερισμὸν ὥσπερ νεόφυτον. | it will blossom from the scent of water, and will produce a crop, as one newly planted. | ||
| ἀνὴρ δὲ τελευτήσας ᾤχετο, πεσὼν δὲ βροτὸς οὐκέτι ἔστιν. | But a man that has died is utterly gone; and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more. | ||
| χρόνῳ γὰρ σπανίζεται θάλασσα, ποταμὸς δὲ ἐρημωθεὶς ἐξηράνθη· | For the sea wastes in [length of] time, and a river fails and is dried up. | ||
| ἄνθρωπος δὲ κοιμηθεὶς οὐ μὴ ἀναστῇ, ἕως ἂν ὁ οὐρανὸς οὐ μὴ συρραφῇ· | And man that has lain down [in death] shall certainly not rise again till the heaven be dissolved, and they shall not awake from their sleep. | ||
| εἰ γὰρ ὄφελον ἐν ᾅδῃ με ἐφύλαξας, ἔκρυψας δέ με, ἕως ἂν παύσηταί σου ἡ ὀργὴ, καὶ τάξῃ μοι χρόνον, ἐν ᾧ μνείαν μου ποιήσῃ. | For oh that you had kept me in the grave, and had hidden me until your wrath should cease, and you should set me a time in which you would remember me! | ||
| ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος, ζήσεται συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ· ὑπομενῶ, ἕως ἂν πάλιν γένωμαι. | For if a man should die, shall he live [again], having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again? | ||
| εἶτα καλέσεις, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ὑπακούσομαι, τὰ δὲ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σου μὴ ἀποποιοῦ. | Then shall you call, and I will listen to you: but do not you reject the work of your hands. | ||
| ἠρίθμησας δέ μου τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα, καὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ σε οὐδὲν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου· | But you have numbered my devices: and not one of my sins shall escape you? | ||
| ἐσφράγισας δέ μου τὰς ἀνομίας ἐν βαλλαντίῳ, ἐπεσημήνω δέ, εἴ τι ἄκων παρέβην. | An you have sealed up my transgressions in a bag, and marked if I have been guilty of any transgression unawares. | ||
| καὶ πλὴν ὄρος πῖπτον διαπεσεῖται, καὶ πέτρα παλαιωθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῆς· | And verily a mountain falling will utterly be destroyed, and a rock shall be worn out of its place. | ||
| λίθους ἐλέαναν ὕδατα, καὶ κατέκλυσεν ὕδατα ὕπτια τοῦ χώματος τῆς γῆς· καὶ ὑπομονὴν ἀνθρώπου ἀπώλεσας. | The waters wear the stones, and waters falling headlong [overflow] a heap of the earth: and you destroy the hope of man. | ||
| ὦσας αὐτὸν εἰς τέλος, καὶ ᾤχετο· ἐπέστησας αὐτῷ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας· | You drive him to an end, and he is gone: you set your face against him, and send him away; | ||
| πολλῶν δὲ γενομένων τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ οὐκ οἶδεν, ἐὰν δὲ ὀλίγοι γένωνται, οὐκ ἐπίσταται· | and though his children be multiplied, he knows [it] not; and if they be few, he is not aware. | ||
| ἀλλ' ἢ αἱ σάρκες αὐτοῦ ἤλγησαν, ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπένθησεν. | But his flesh is in pain, and his soul mourns. | ||
