33 ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧECCLESIASTICUS - Brenton|RSVReference
1Τῷ φοβουμένῳ κύριον οὐκ ἀπαντήσει κακόν,
ἀλλ' ἐν πειρασμῷ καὶ πάλιν ἐξελεῖται.
No evil will befall the man who fears the Lord,
but in trial he will deliver him again and again.
 
2ἀνὴρ σοφὸς οὐ μισήσει νόμον,
ὁ δὲ ὑποκρινόμενος ἐν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐν καταιγίδι πλοῖον.
A wise man will not hate the law,
but he who is hypocritical about it is like a boat in a storm.
 
3ἄνθρωπος συνετὸς ἐμπιστεύσει νόμῳ,
καὶ ὁ νόμος αὐτῷ πιστὸς ὡς ἐρώτημα δήλων.
A man of understanding will trust in the law;
for him the law is as dependable as an inquiry by means of Urim.
 
4ἑτοίμασον λόγον καὶ οὕτως ἀκουσθήσῃ,
σύνδησον παιδείαν καὶ ἀποκρίθητι.
Prepare what to say, and thus you will be heard;
bind together your instruction, and make your answer.
 
5τροχὸς ἁμάξης σπλάγχνα μωροῦ,
καὶ ὡς ἄξων στρεφόμενος ὁ διαλογισμὸς αὐτοῦ.
The heart of a fool is like a cart wheel,
and his thoughts like a turning axle.
 
6ἵππος εἰς ὀχείαν ὡς φίλος μωκός,
ὑποκάτω παντὸς ἐπικαθημένου χρεμετίζει.
A stallion is like a mocking friend;
he neighs under every one who sits on him.
 
7Διὰ τί ἡμέρα ἡμέρας ὑπερέχει,
καὶ πᾶν φῶς ἡμέρας ἐνιαυτοῦ ἀφ' ἡλίου;
Why is any day better than another,
when all the daylight in the year is from the sun?
Everyone is different. Sir.33.7-18
8ἐν γνώσει κυρίου διεχωρίσθησαν,
καὶ ἠλλοίωσεν καιροὺς καὶ ἑορτάς·
By the Lord's decision they were distinguished,
and he appointed the different seasons and feasts;
 
9ἀπ' αὐτῶν ἀνύψωσεν καὶ ἡγίασεν,
καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἔθηκεν εἰς ἀριθμὸν ἡμερῶν.
some of them he exalted and hallowed,
and some of them he made ordinary days.
 
10καὶ ἄνθρωποι πάντες ἀπὸ ἐδάφους,
καὶ ἐκ γῆς ἐκτίσθη Αδαμ·
All men are from the ground,
and Adam was created of the dust.
 
11ἐν πλήθει ἐπιστήμης κύριος διεχώρισεν αὐτοὺς,
καὶ ἠλλοίωσεν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν·
In the fulness of his knowledge the Lord distinguished them
and appointed their different ways;
 
12ἐξ αὐτῶν εὐλόγησεν καὶ ἀνύψωσεν,
καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἡγίασεν καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἤγγισεν·
ἀπ' αὐτῶν κατηράσατο καὶ ἐταπείνωσεν,
καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ στάσεως αὐτῶν.
some of them he blessed and exalted,
and some of them he made holy and brought near to himself;
but some of them he cursed and brought low,
and he turned them out of their place.
 
13ὡς πηλὸς κεραμέως ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ,
πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν εὐδοκίαν αὐτοῦ·
οὕτως ἄνθρωποι ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιήσαντος αὐτοὺς,
ἀποδοῦναι αὐτοῖς κατὰ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτοῦ.
As clay in the hand of the potter -
for all his ways are as he pleases -
so men are in the hand of him who made them,
to give them as he decides.
 
14ἀπέναντι τοῦ κακοῦ τὸ ἀγαθόν,
καὶ ἀπέναντι τοῦ θανάτου ἡ ζωή,
οὕτως ἀπέναντι εὐσεβοῦς ἁμαρτωλός·
Good is the opposite of evil,
and life the opposite of death;
so the sinner is the opposite of the godly.
 
15καὶ οὕτως ἔμβλεψον εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ ὑψίστου,
δύο δύο, ἓν κατέναντι τοῦ ἑνός.
Look upon all the works of the Most High;
they likewise are in pairs, one the opposite of the other.
 
16Κἀγὼ ἔσχατος ἠγρύπνησα,
ὡς καλαμώμενος ὀπίσω τρυγητῶν·
ἐν εὐλογίᾳ Κυρίου ἔφθασα,
καὶ ὡς τρυγῶν ἐπλήρωσα ληνόν.
I was the last on watch;
I was like one who gleans after the grape-gatherers;
by the blessing of the Lord I excelled,
and like a grape-gatherer I filled my wine press.
 
17κατανοήσατε ὅτι οὐκ ἐμοὶ μόνῳ ἐκοπίασα,
ἀλλὰ πᾶσιν τοῖς ζητοῦσιν παιδείαν.
Consider that I have not laboured for myself alone,
but for all who seek instruction.
 
18ἀκούσατέ μου, μεγιστᾶνες λαοῦ,
καὶ οἱ ἡγούμενοι ἐκκλησίας, ἐνωτίσασθε.
Hear me, you who are great among the people,
and you leaders of the congregation, hearken.
 
19υἱῷ καὶ γυναικί, ἀδελφῷ καὶ φίλῳ
μὴ δῷς ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ σὲ ἐν ζωῇ σου·
καὶ μὴ δῷς ἑτέρῳ τὰ χρήματά σου,
ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθεὶς δέῃ περὶ αὐτῶν.
To son or wife, to brother or friend,
do not give power over yourself,
as long as you live;
and do not give your property to another,
lest you change your mind and must ask for it.
Be independent. Sir.33.19-23
20ἕως ἔτι ζῇς καὶ πνοὴ ἐν σοί,
μὴ ἀλλάξῃς σεαυτὸν ἐν πάσῃ σαρκί·
While you are still alive and have breath in you,
do not let any one take your place.
 
21κρεῖσσον γάρ ἐστιν τὰ τέκνα δεηθῆναί σου
ἢ σὲ ἐμβλέπειν εἰς χεῖρας υἱῶν σου.
For it is better that your children should ask from you
than that you should look to the hand of you sons.
 
22ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου γίνου ὑπεράγων,
μὴ δῷς μῶμον ἐν τῇ δόξῃ σου.
Excel in all that you do;
bring no stain upon your honour.
 
23ἐν ἡμέρᾳ συντελείας ἡμερῶν ζωῆς σου
καὶ ἐν καιρῷ τελευτῆς διάδος κληρονομίαν.
At the time when you end the days of your life,
in the hour of death, distribute your inheritance.
 
24Χορτάσματα καὶ ῥάβδος καὶ φορτία ὄνῳ,
ἄρτος καὶ παιδεία καὶ ἔργον οἰκέτῃ.
Fodder and a stick and burdens for an ass;
bread and discipline and work for a servant.
Slaves. Sir.33.24-31
25ἔργασαι ἐν παιδί, καὶ εὑρήσεις ἀνάπαυσιν·
ἄνες χεῖρας αὐτῷ, καὶ ζητήσει ἐλευθερίαν.
Set your slave to work, and you will find rest;
leave his hands idle, and he will seek liberty.
 
26ζυγὸς καὶ ἱμὰς τράχηλον κάμψουσιν,
καὶ οἰκέτῃ κακούργῳ στρέβλαι καὶ βάσανοι·
Yoke and thong will bow the neck,
and for a wicked servant there are racks and tortures.
 
27ἔμβαλε αὐτὸν εἰς ἐργασίαν, ἵνα μὴ ἀργῇ,
πολλὴν γὰρ κακίαν ἐδίδαξεν ἡ ἀργία·
Put him to work, that he may not be idle,
for idleness teaches much evil.
 
28εἰς ἔργα κατάστησον, καθὼς πρέπει αὐτῷ,
κἂν μὴ πειθαρχῇ, βάρυνον τὰς πέδας αὐτοῦ.
Set him to work, as is fitting for him,
and if he does not obey, make his fetters heavy.
 
29καὶ μὴ περισσεύσῃς ἐπὶ πάσῃ σαρκὶ,
καὶ ἄνευ κρίσεως μὴ ποιήσῃς μηδέν.
Do not act immoderately toward anybody,
and do nothing without discretion.
 
30Εἰ ἔστιν σοι οἰκέτης, ἔστω ὡς σύ,
ὅτι ἐν αἵματι ἐκτήσω αὐτόν·
If you have a servant, let him be as yourself,
because you have bought him with blood.
 
31εἰ ἔστιν σοι οἰκέτης, αὐτὸν ὡς σεαυτόν,
ὅτι ὡς ἡ ψυχή σου ἐπιδεησις αὐτῶ·
If you have a servant,
treat him as a brother,
for as your own soul you will need him.
 
32ἐὰν κακώσης αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπάρας ἀποδρᾶ,
If you ill-treat him, and he leaves and runs away,
 
33ἐν ποίᾳ ὁδῶ ζητήσεις αὐτόν;
which way will you go to seek him?

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
