29 ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧECCLESIASTICUS - Brenton|RSVReference
1Ὁ ποιῶν ἔλεος δανιεῖ τῷ πλησίον,
καὶ ὁ ἐπισχύων τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τηρεῖ ἐντολάς.
He that shows mercy will lend to his neighbour,
and he that strengthens him with his hand keeps the commandments.
Loans. Sir.29.1-7
2δάνεισον τῷ πλησίον ἐν καιρῷ χρείας αὐτοῦ,
καὶ πάλιν ἀπόδος τῷ πλησίον εἰς τὸν καιρόν·
Lend to your neighbour in the time of his need;
and in turn, repay your neighbour promptly.
 
3στερέωσον λόγον καὶ πιστώθητι μετ' αὐτοῦ,
καὶ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ εὑρήσεις τὴν χρείαν σου.
Confirm your word and keep faith with him,
and on every occasion you will find what you need.
 
4πολλοὶ ὡς εὕρεμα ἐνόμισαν δάνος,
καὶ παρέσχον κόπον τοῖς βοηθήσασιν αὐτοῖς.
Many persons regard a loan as a windfall,
and cause trouble to those who help them.
 
5ἕως οὗ λάβῃ, καταφιλήσει χεῖρας αὐτοῦ,
καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν χρημάτων τοῦ πλησίον ταπεινώσει φωνήν·
καὶ ἐν καιρῷ ἀποδόσεως παρελκύσει χρόνον,
καὶ ἀποδώσει λόγους ἀκηδίας
καὶ τὸν καιρὸν αἰτιάσεται.
A man will kiss another's hands until he gets a loan,
and will lower his voice in speaking of his neighbour's money;
but at the time for repayment he will delay,
and will pay in words of unconcern,
and will find fault with the time.
 
6ἐὰν ἰσχύσῃ, μόλις κομίσεται τὸ ἥμισυ
καὶ λογιεῖται αὐτὸ ὡς εὕρεμα·
εἰ δὲ μή, ἀπεστέρησεν αὐτὸν τῶν χρημάτων αὐτοῦ,
καὶ ἐκτήσατο αὐτὸν ἐχθρὸν δωρεάν·
κατάρας καὶ λοιδορίας ἀποδώσει αὐτῷ,
καὶ ἀντὶ δόξης ἀποδώσει αὐτῷ ἀτιμίαν.
If the lender exert pressure, he will hardly get back half,
and will regard that as a windfall.
If he does not, the borrower has robbed him of his money,
and he has needlessly made him his enemy;
he will repay him with curses and reproaches,
and instead of glory will repay him with dishonour.
 
7πολλοὶ οὐ χάριν πονηρίας ἀπέστρεψαν,
ἀποστερηθῆναι δωρεὰν εὐλαβήθησαν.
Because of such wickedness, therefore, many have refused to lend;
they have been afraid of being defrauded needlessly.
 
8Πλὴν ἐπὶ ταπεινῷ μακροθύμησον,
καὶ ἐπ' ἐλεημοσύνῃ μὴ παρελκύσῃς αὐτόν.
Nevertheless, be patient with a man in humble circumstances,
and do not make him wait for your alms.
Generosity. Sir.29.8-13
9χάριν ἐντολῆς ἀντιλαβοῦ πένητος,
καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἔνδειαν αὐτοῦ μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς αὐτὸν κενόν.
Help a poor man for the commandment's sake,
and because of his need do not send him away empty.
 
10ἀπόλεσον ἀργύριον δι' ἀδελφὸν καὶ φίλον,
καὶ μὴ ἰωθήτω ὑπὸ τὸν λίθον εἰς ἀπώλειαν.
Lose your silver for the sake of a brother or a friend,
and do not let it rust under a stone and be lost.
 
11θὲς τὸν θησαυρόν σου κατ' ἐντολὰς ὑψίστου,
καὶ λυσιτελήσει σοι μᾶλλον ἢ τὸ χρυσίον.
Lay up your treasure according to the commandments of the Most High,
and it will profit you more than gold.
 
12σύγκλεισον ἐλεημοσύνην ἐν τοῖς ταμιείοις σου,
καὶ αὕτη ἐξελεῖταί σε ἐκ πάσης κακώσεως·
Store up almsgiving in your treasury,
and it will rescue you from all affliction;
 
13ὑπὲρ ἀσπίδα κράτους καὶ ὑπὲρ δόρυ ὁλκῆς
κατέναντι ἐχθροῦ πολεμήσει ὑπὲρ σοῦ.
more than a mighty shield and more than a heavy spear,
it will fight on your behalf against your enemy.
 
14Ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς ἐγγυήσεται τὸν πλησίον,
καὶ ὁ ἀπολωλεκὼς αἰσχύνην ἐγκαταλείψει αὐτόν.
A good man will be surety for his neighbour,
but a man who has lost his sense of shame will fail him.
Guarantees. Sir.29.14-20
15χάριτας ἐγγύου μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ·
ἔδωκεν γὰρ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ὑπὲρ σοῦ.
Do not forget all the kindness of your surety,
for he has given his life for you.
 
16ἀγαθὰ ἐγγύου ἀνατρέψει ἁμαρτωλός,
καὶ ἀχάριστος ἐν διανοίᾳ ἐγκαταλείψει ῥυσάμενον.
A sinner will overthrow the prosperity of his surety,
 
17ἐγγύη πολλοὺς ἀπώλεσεν κατευθύνοντας,
καὶ ἐσάλευσεν αὐτοὺς ὡς κῦμα θαλάσσης·
and one who does not feel grateful will abandon his rescuer.
 
18ἄνδρας δυνατοὺς ἀπῴκισεν,
καὶ ἐπλανήθησαν ἐν ἔθνεσιν ἀλλοτρίοις.
Being surety has ruined many men who were prosperous,
and has shaken them like a wave of the sea;
it has driven men of power into exile,
and they have wandered among foreign nations.
 
19ἁμαρτωλὸς ἐμπεσὼν εἰς ἐγγύην
καὶ διώκων ἐργολαβίας ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κρίσεις.
The sinner who has fallen into suretyship
and pursues gain will fall into lawsuits.
 
20ἀντιλαβοῦ τοῦ πλησίον κατὰ δύναμίν σου,
καὶ πρόσεχε σεαυτῷ μὴ ἐμπέσῃς.
Assist your neighbour according to your ability,
but take heed to yourself lest you fall.
 
21Ἀρχὴ ζωῆς ὕδωρ καὶ ἄρτος καὶ ἱμάτιον,
καὶ οἶκος καλύπτων ἀσχημοσύνην.
The essentials for life are water and bread
and clothing and a house to cover one's nakedness.
Home & hospitality. Sir.29.21-28
22κρείσσων βίος πτωχοῦ ὑπὸ σκέπην δοκῶν
ἢ ἐδέσματα λαμπρὰ ἐν ἀλλοτρίοις.
Better is the life of a poor man under the shelter of his roof
than sumptuous food in another man's house.
 
23ἐπὶ μικρῷ καὶ μεγάλῳ εὐδοκίαν ἔχε,
καὶ ὀνειδισμὸν παροικίας οὐ μὴ ἀκούσῃς.
Be content with little or much.
 
24ζωὴ πονηρὰ ἐξ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν,
καὶ οὗ παροικήσεις, οὐκ ἀνοίξεις στόμα·
It is a miserable life to go from house to house,
and where you are a stranger you may not open your mouth;
 
25ξενιεῖς καὶ ποτιεῖς εἰς ἀχάριστα,
καὶ πρὸς ἐπὶ τούτοις πικρὰ ἀκούσῃ
you will play the host and provide drink without being thanked,
and besides this you will hear bitter words:
 
26Πάρελθε, πάροικε, κόσμησον τράπεζαν,
καὶ εἴ τι ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ψώμισόν με·
"Come here, stranger, prepare the table,
and if you have anything at hand, let me have it to eat."
 
27ἔξελθε, πάροικε, ἀπὸ προσώπου δόξης,
ἐπεξένωταί μοι ὁ ἀδελφός, χρεία τῆς οἰκίας.
"Give place, stranger, to an honoured person;
my brother has come to stay with me;
I need my house."
 
28βαρέα ταῦτα ἀνθρώπῳ ἔχοντι φρόνησιν,
ἐπιτίμησις οἰκίας καὶ ὀνειδισμὸς δανειστοῦ.
These things are hard to bear for a man who has feeling:
scolding about lodging and the reproach of the moneylender.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
