19ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧECCLESIASTICUS (Revised Standard Version)Reference

1ἐργάτης μέθυσος οὐ πλουτισθήσεται·
ὁ ἐξουθενῶν τὰ ὀλίγα κατὰ μικρὸν πεσεῖται.
A workman who is a drunkard will not become rich;
he who despises small things will fail little by little.
 
2οἶνος καὶ γυναῖκες ἀποστήσουσιν συνετούς,
καὶ ὁ κολλώμενος πόρναις τολμηρότερος ἔσται·
Wine and women lead intelligent men astray,
and the man who consorts with harlots is very reckless.
 
3σήπη καὶ σκώληκες κληρονομήσουσιν αὐτόν,
καὶ ψυχὴ τολμηρὰ ἐξαρθήσεται.
Decay and worms will inherit him,
and the reckless soul will be snatched away.
 
4Ὁ ταχὺ ἐμπιστεύων κοῦφος καρδίᾳ,
καὶ ὁ ἁμαρτάνων εἰς ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ πλημμελήσει.
One who trusts others too quickly is lightminded,
and one who sins does wrong to himself.
 
5ὁ εὐφραινόμενος καρδίᾳ καταγνωσθήσεται,
One who rejoices in wickedness will be condemned, 
6καὶ ὁ μισῶν λαλιὰν ἐλαττονοῦται κακίᾳ.
and for one who hates gossip evil is lessened.
Loose-talk. Sir.19.6-19
7μηδέποτε δευτερώσῃς λόγον,
καὶ οὐθέν σοι οὐ μὴ ἐλαττονωθῇ.
Never repeat a conversation,
and you will lose nothing at all.
 
8ἐν φίλῳ καὶ ἐχθρῷ μὴ διηγοῦ,
καὶ εἰ μή ἐστίν σοι ἁμαρτία, μὴ ἀποκάλυπτε·
With friend or foe do not report it,
and unless it would be a sin for you, do not disclose it;
 
9ἀκήκοεν γάρ σου καὶ ἐφυλάξατό σε,
καὶ ἐν καιρῷ μισήσει σε.
for some one has heard you and watched you,
and when the time comes he will hate you.
 
10ἀκήκοας λόγον; συναποθανέτω σοι·
θάρσει, οὐ μή σε ῥήξει.
Have you heard a word? Let it die with you.
Be brave! It will not make you burst!
 
11ἀπὸ προσώπου λόγου ὠδινήσει μωρὸς,
ὡς ἀπὸ προσώπου βρέφους ἡ τίκτουσα.
With such a word a fool will suffer pangs
like a woman in labor with a child.
 
12βέλος πεπηγὸς ἐν μηρῷ σαρκός,
οὕτως λόγος ἐν κοιλίᾳ μωροῦ.
Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh,
so is a word inside a fool.
 
13Ἔλεγξον φίλον, μήποτε οὐκ ἐποίησεν,
καὶ εἴ τι ἐποίησεν, μήποτε προσθῇ.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it;
but if he did anything, so that he may do it no more.
 
14ἔλεγξον τὸν πλησίον, μήποτε οὐκ εἶπεν,
καὶ εἰ εἴρηκεν, ἵνα μὴ δευτερώσῃ.
Question a neighbor, perhaps he did not say it;
but if he said it, so that he may not say it again.
 
15ἔλεγξον φίλον, πολλάκις γὰρ γίνεται διαβολή,
καὶ μὴ παντὶ λόγῳ πίστευε.
Question a friend, for often it is slander;
so do not believe everything you hear.
 
16ἔστιν ὀλισθάνων καὶ οὐκ ἀπὸ ψυχῆς,
καὶ τίς οὐχ ἥμαρτεν ἐν τῇ γλώσσῃ αὐτοῦ;
A person may make a slip without intending it.
Who has never sinned with his tongue?
 
17ἔλεγξον τὸν πλησίον σου πρὶν ἢ ἀπειλῆσαι,
καὶ δὸς τόπον νόμῳ ὑψίστου.
Question your neighbor before you threaten him;
and let the law of the Most High take its course.
 
20Πᾶσα σοφία φόβος Κυρίου,
καὶ ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ ποίησις νόμου·
All wisdom is the fear of the Lord,
and in all wisdom there is the fulfilment of the law.
Real Wisdom. Sir.19.20-30
22καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν σοφία πονηρίας ἐπιστήμη,
καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὅπου βουλὴ ἁμαρτωλῶν φρόνησις.
But the knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom,
nor is there prudence where sinners take counsel.
 
23ἔστιν πανουργία καὶ αὕτη βδέλυγμα,
καὶ ἔστιν ἄφρων ἐλαττούμενος σοφίᾳ·
There is a cleverness which is abominable,
but there is a fool who merely lacks wisdom.
 
24κρείττων ἡττώμενος ἐν συνέσει ἔμφοβος
ἢ περισσεύων ἐν φρονήσει καὶ παραβαίνων νόμον.
Better is the God-fearing man who lacks intelligence,
than the highly prudent man who transgresses the law.
 
25ἔστιν πανουργία ἀκριβὴς καὶ αὕτη ἄδικος,
καὶ ἔστιν διαστρέφων χάριν τοῦ ἐκφᾶναι κρίμα.
There is a cleverness which is scrupulous but unjust,
and there are people who distort kindness to gain a verdict.
 
26ἔστιν πονηρευόμενος συγκεκυφὼς μελανίᾳ,
καὶ τὰ ἐντὸς αὐτοῦ πλήρη δόλου·
There is a rascal bowed down in mourning,
but inwardly he is full of deceit.
 
27συγκρύφων πρόσωπον καὶ ἐθελοκωφῶν,
ὅπου οὐκ ἐπεγνώσθη, προφθάσει σε·
He hides his face and pretends not to hear;
but where no one notices, he will forestall you.
 
28καὶ ἐὰν ὑπὸ ἐλαττώματος ἰσχύος κωλυθῇ ἁμαρτεῖν,
ἐὰν εὕρῃ καιρόν, κακοποιήσει.
And if by lack of strength he is prevented from sinning,
he will do evil when he finds an opportunity.
 
29ἀπὸ ὁράσεως ἐπιγνωσθήσεται ἀνήρ,
καὶ ἀπὸ ἀπαντήσεως προσώπου ἐπιγνωσθήσεται νοήμων·
A man is known by his appearance,
and a sensible man is known by his face,
when you meet him.
 
30στολισμὸς ἀνδρὸς καὶ γέλως ὀδόντων καὶ βήματα ἀνθρώπου ἀναγγελεῖ τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ.
A man's attire and open-mouthed laughter,
and a man's manner of walking,
show what he is.

Notes:The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text.)
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica 1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
