1Πολλῶν καὶ μεγάλων ἡμῖν διὰ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν Whereas many great teachings have been given to us through the law and the prophetsECCLESIASTICUS. THE WISDOM OF JOSHUA, SON OF SIRACH. Forward. Sir.Intro.1-36
2καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν κατ' αὐτοὺς ἠκολουθηκότων δεδο μένων, and the others that followed them, 
3ὑπὲρ ὧν δέον ἐστὶν ἐπαινεῖν τὸν Ισραηλ παιδείας καὶ σοφίας, on account of which we should praise Israel for instruction and wisdom; 
4καὶ ὡς οὐ μόνον αὐτοὺς τοὺς ἀναγινώσκοντας δέον ἐστὶν ἐπιστήμονας γίνεσθαι, and since it is necessary not only that the readers themselves should acquire understanding 
5ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς ἐκτὸς δύνασθαι τοὺς φιλομαθοῦντας χρη σίμους εἶναι but also that those who love learning should be able to help the outsiders 
6καὶ λέγοντας καὶ γράφοντας, by both speaking and writing, 
7ὁ πάππος μου Ἰησοῦς ἐπὶ πλεῖον ἑαυτὸν δοὺς my grandfather Jesus, after devoting himself 
8εἴς τε τὴν τοῦ νόμου especially to the reading of the law 
9καὶ τῶν προφητῶν and the prophets 
10καὶ τῶν ἄλλων πατρίων βιβλίων ἀνάγνωσιν and the other books of our fathers, 
11καὶ ἐν τούτοις ἱκανὴν ἕξιν περιποιησάμενος and after acquiring considerable proficiency in them, 
12προήχθη καὶ αὐτὸς συγγράψαι τι τῶν εἰς παιδείαν καὶ σοφίαν ἀνηκόντων, was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, 
13ὅπως οἱ φιλομαθεῖς καὶ τούτων ἔνοχοι γενόμενοι in order that, by becoming conversant with this also, 
14πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐπιπροσθῶσιν διὰ τῆς ἐννόμου βιώσεως. those who love learning should make even greater progress in living according to the law. 
15Παρακέκλησθε οὖν You are urged therefore 
16μετ' εὐνοίας καὶ προσοχῆς to read with good will and attention, 
17τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν ποιεῖσθαι and to be indulgent in cases where, 
18καὶ συγγνώμην ἔχειν despite our diligent labour 
19ἐφ' οἷς ἂν δοκῶμεν in translating, 
20τῶν κατὰ τὴν ἑρμηνείαν πεφιλοπονημένων τισὶν τῶν λέξεων ἀδυναμεῖν· we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly. 
21οὐ γὰρ ἰσοδυναμεῖ For what was originally 
22αὐτὰ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς Εβραιστὶ λεγόμενα καὶ ὅταν μεταχθῇ εἰς ἑτέραν γλῶσσαν· expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language. 
23οὐ μόνον δὲ ταῦτα, Not only this work, 
24ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτὸς ὁ νόμος καὶ αἱ προφητεῖαι but even the law itself, the prophecies, 
25καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν βιβλίων and the rest of the books 
26οὐ μικρὰν ἔχει τὴν διαφορὰν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λεγόμενα. differ not a little as originally expressed. 
27Ἑν γὰρ τῷ ὀγδόῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει ἐπὶ τοῦ Εὐεργέτου βασιλέως When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes 
28παραγενηθεὶς εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ συγχρονίσας and stayed for some time, 
29εὑρὼν οὐ μικρᾶς παιδείας ἀφόμοιον I found opportunity for no little instruction. 
30ἀναγκαιότατον ἐθέμην καὶ αὐτός τινα προσενέγκασθαι σπου δὴν καὶ φιλοπονίαν τοῦ μεθερμηνεῦσαι τήνδε τὴν βίβλον It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some pains and labour to the translation of the following book, 
31πολλὴν ἀγρυπνίαν καὶ ἐπιστήμην προσενεγκάμενος using in that period of time 
32ἐν τῷ διαστήματι τοῦ χρόνου great watchfulness and skill 
33πρὸς τὸ ἐπὶ πέρας ἀγαγόντα τὸ βιβλίον ἐκδόσθαι in order to complete and publish the book 
34καὶ τοῖς ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ βουλομένοις φιλομαθεῖν for those living abroad who wished to gain learning, 
35προκατασκευαζομένους τὰ ἤθη being prepared in character 
36ἐννόμως βιοτεύειν. to live according to the law.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
