1Θεὲ πατέρων καὶ Κύριε τοῦ ἐλέους
ὁ ποιήσας τὰ πάντα ἐν λόγῳ σου
 "O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy,
who hast made all things by thy word,
Solomon prays for Wisdom. Wis.9.1-18
2καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ σου κατασκευάσας ἄνθρωπον,
ἵνα δεσπόζῃ τῶν ὑπὸ σοῦ γενομένων κτισμάτων
 and by thy wisdom hast formed man,
to have dominion over the creatures thou hast made,
 
3καὶ διέπῃ τὸν κόσμον ἐν ὁσιότητι καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ,
καὶ ἐν εὐθύτητι ψυχῆς κρίσιν κρίνῃ,
 and rule the world in holiness and righteousness,
and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul,
 
4δός μοι τὴν τῶν σῶν θρόνων πάρεδρον σοφίαν,
καὶ μή με ἀποδοκιμάσῃς ἐκ παίδων σου.
 give me the wisdom that sits by thy throne,
and do not reject me from among thy servants.
 
5ὅτι ἐγὼ δοῦλος σὸς καὶ υἱὸς τῆς παιδίσκης σου,
ἄνθρωπος ἀσθενὴς καὶ ὀλιγοχρόνιος
καὶ ἐλάσσων ἐν συνέσει κρίσεως καὶ νόμων·
 For I am thy slave and the son of thy maidservant,
a man who is weak and short-lived,
with little understanding of judgment and laws;
 
6κἂν γάρ τις ᾖ τέλειος ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων,
τῆς ἀπὸ σοῦ σοφίας ἀπούσης εἰς οὐδὲν λογισθήσεται.
 for even if one is perfect among the sons of men,
yet without the wisdom that comes from thee he will be regarded as nothing.
 
7σύ με προείλω βασιλέα λαοῦ σου
καὶ δικαστὴν υἱῶν σου καὶ θυγατέρων·
 Thou hast chosen me to be king of thy people
and to be judge over thy sons and daughters.
 
8εἶπας οἰκοδομῆσαι ναὸν ἐν ὄρει ἁγίῳ σου,
καὶ ἐν πόλει κατασκηνώσεώς σου θυσιαστήριον,
μίμημα σκηνῆς ἁγίας, ἣν προητοίμασας ἀπ' ἀρχῆς.
 Thou hast given command to build a temple on thy holy mountain,
and an altar in the city of thy habitation,
a copy of the holy tent which thou didst prepare from the beginning.
 
9καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἡ σοφία ἡ εἰδυῖα τὰ ἔργα σου,
καὶ παροῦσα, ὅτε ἐποίεις τὸν κόσμον,
καὶ ἐπισταμένη τί ἀρεστὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου
καὶ τί εὐθὲς ἐν ἐντολαῖς σου.
 With thee is wisdom, who knows thy works
and was present when thou didst make the world,
and who understand what is pleasing in thy sight
and what is right according to thy commandments.
 
10ἐξαπόστειλον αὐτὴν ἐξ ἁγίων οὐρανῶν,
καὶ ἀπὸ θρόνου δόξης σου πέμψον αὐτήν,
ἵνα συμπαροῦσά μοι κοπιάσῃ,
καὶ γνῶ τί εὐάρεστόν ἐστιν παρὰ σοί.
 Send her forth from the holy heavens,
and from the throne of thy glory send her,
that she may be with me and toil,
and that I may learn what is pleasing to thee.
 
11οἶδε γὰρ ἐκείνη πάντα καὶ συνίει,
καὶ ὁδηγήσει με ἐν ταῖς πράξεσί μου σωφρόνως,
καὶ φυλάξει με ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτῆς·
 For she knows and understands all things,
and she will guide me wisely in my actions
and guard me with her glory.
 
12καὶ ἔσται προσδεκτὰ τὰ ἔργα μου,
καὶ διακρινῶ τὸν λαόν σου δικαίως,
καὶ ἔσομαι ἄξιος θρόνων πατρός μου.
 Then my works will be acceptable,
and I shall judge thy people justly,
and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.
 
13τίς γὰρ ἄνθρωπος γνώσεται βουλὴν θεοῦ;
ἢ τίς ἐνθυμηθήσεται τί θέλει ὁ κύριος;
 For what man can learn the counsel of God?
Or who can discern what the Lord wills?
 
14λογισμοὶ γὰρ θνητῶν δειλοί,
καὶ ἐπισφαλεῖς αἱ ἐπίνοιαι ἡμῶν·
 For the reasoning of mortals is worthless,
and our designs are likely to fail,
 
15φθαρτὸν γὰρ σῶμα βαρύνει ψυχήν,
καὶ βρίθει τὸ γεῶδες σκῆνος νοῦν πολυφρόντιδα.
 for a perishable body weighs down the soul,
and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind.
 
16καὶ μόλις εἰκάζομεν τὰ ἐπὶ γῆς,
καὶ τὰ ἐν χερσὶν εὑρίσκομεν μετὰ πόνου·
τὰ δὲ ἐν οὐρανοῖς τίς ἐξιχνίασεν;
 We can hardly guess at what is on earth,
and what is at hand we find with labour;
but who has traced out what is in the heavens?
 
17βουλὴν δέ σου τίς ἔγνω, εἰ μὴ σὺ ἔδωκας σοφίαν
καὶ ἔπεμψας τὸ ἅγιόν σου πνεῦμα ἀπὸ ὑψίστων;
 Who has learned thy counsel, unless thou hast given wisdom
and sent thy holy Spirit from on high?
 
18καὶ οὕτως διωρθώθησαν αἱ τρίβοι τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς,
καὶ τὰ ἀρεστά σου ἐδιδάχθησαν ἄνθρωποι,
καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐσώθησαν.
 And thus the paths of those on earth were set right,
and men were taught what pleases thee,
and were saved by wisdom."

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.

Passage headings are generally as printed in the Bible Society's "Good News Bible", 1976.
