16 ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΑΛΩΜΩΝΟΣWISDOM OF SOLOMON - Brenton|RSVReference
1Διὰ τοῦτο δι' ὁμοίων ἐκολάσθησαν ἀξίως,
καὶ διὰ πλήθους κνωδάλων ἐβασανίσθησαν.
Therefore those men were deservedly punished through such creatures,
and were tormented by a multitude of animals.
 
2ἀνθ' ἧς κολάσεως εὐεργετήσας τὸν λαόν σου,
εἰς ἐπιθυμίαν ὀρέξεως ξένην γεῦσιν,
τροφὴν ἡτοίμασας ὀρτυγομήτραν,
Instead of this punishment thou didst show kindness to thy people,
and thou didst prepare quails to eat,
a delicacy to satisfy the desire of appetite;
 
3ἵνα ἐκεῖνοι μὲν ἐπιθυμοῦντες τροφὴν
διὰ τὴν εἰδέχθειαν τῶν ἐπαπεσταλμένων
καὶ τὴν ἀναγκαίαν ὄρεξιν ἀποστρέφωνται,
αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐπ' ὀλίγον ἐνδεεῖς γενόμενοι
καὶ ξένης μετάσχωσι γεύσεως.
in order that those men,
when they desired food,
lose the least remnant of appetite because of the odious creatures sent to them,
while thy people, after suffering want a short time,
might partake of delicacies.
 
4ἔδει γὰρ ἐκείνοις μὲν ἀπαραίτητον ἔνδειαν ἐπελθεῖν τυραννοῦσιν,
τούτοις δὲ μόνον δειχθῆναι πῶς οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν ἐβασανίζοντο.
For it was necessary that upon those oppressors inexorable want should come,
while to these it was merely shown how their enemies were being tormented.
 
5Καὶ γὰρ ὅτε αὐτοῖς δεινὸς ἐπῆλθεν θηρίων θυμὸς,
δήγμασίν τε σκολιῶν διεφθείροντο ὄφεων,
οὐ μέχρι τέλους ἔμεινεν ἡ ὀργή σου·
For when the terrible rage of wild beasts came upon thy people
and they were being destroyed by the bites of writhing serpents,
thy wrath did not continue to the end;
 
6εἰς νουθεσίαν δὲ πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐταράχθησαν,
σύμβολον ἔχοντες σωτηρίας εἰς ἀνάμνησιν ἐντολῆς νόμου σου·
they were troubled for a little while as a warning,
and received a token of deliverance to remind them of thy law's command.
 
7ὁ γὰρ ἐπιστραφεὶς οὐ διὰ τὸ θεωρούμενον ἐσῴζετο,
ἀλλὰ διὰ σὲ τὸν πάντων σωτῆρα.
For he who turned toward it was saved, not by what he saw,
but by thee, the Saviour of all.
 
8καὶ ἐν τούτῳ δὲ ἔπεισας τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ἡμῶν,
ὅτι σὺ εἶ ὁ ῥυόμενος ἐκ παντὸς κακοῦ·
And by this also thou didst convince our enemies
that it is thou who deliverest from every evil.
 
9οὓς μὲν γὰρ ἀκρίδων καὶ μυιῶν ἀπέκτεινεν δήγματα,
καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη ἴαμα τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτῶν,
ὅτι ἄξιοι ἦσαν ὑπὸ τοιούτων κολασθῆναι·
For they were killed by the bites of locusts and flies,
and no healing was found for them,
because they deserved to be punished by such things;
 
10τοὺς δὲ υἱούς σου οὐδὲ ἰοβόλων δρακόντων ἐνίκησαν ὀδόντες,
τὸ ἔλεος γάρ σου ἀντιπαρῆλθεν καὶ ἰάσατο αὐτούς.
but thy sons were not conquered even by the teeth of venomous serpents,
for thy mercy came to their help and healed them.
 
11εἰς γὰρ ὑπόμνησιν τῶν λογίων σου ἐνεκεντρίζοντο,
καὶ ὀξέως διεσῴζοντο,
ἵνα μὴ εἰς βαθεῖαν ἐμπεσόντες λήθην
ἀπερίσπαστοι γένωνται τῆς σῆς εὐεργεσίας.
To remind them of thy oracles they were bitten,
and then were quickly delivered,
lest they should fall into deep forgetfulness and become unresponsive to thy kindness.
 
12καὶ γὰρ οὔτε βοτάνη οὔτε μάλαγμα ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς,
ἀλλὰ ὁ σός, κύριε, λόγος ὁ πάντας ἰώμενος.
For neither herb nor poultice cured them,
but it was thy word, O Lord, which heals all men.
 
13σὺ γὰρ ζωῆς καὶ θανάτου ἐξουσίαν ἔχεις,
καὶ κατάγεις εἰς πύλας ᾅδου καὶ ἀνάγεις·
For thou hast power over life and death;
thou dost lead men down to the gates of Hades and back again.
 
14ἄνθρωπος δὲ ἀποκτέννει μὲν τῇ κακίᾳ αὐτοῦ,
ἐξελθὸν δὲ πνεῦμα οὐκ ἀναστρέφει,
οὐδὲ ἀναλύει ψυχὴν παραλημφθεῖσαν.
A man in his wickedness kills another,
but he cannot bring back the departed spirit,
nor set free the imprisoned soul.
 
15Τὴν δὲ σὴν χεῖρα φυγεῖν ἀδύνατόν ἐστιν·
To escape from thy hand is impossible;
Distastrous storms hit Egypt. Wis.16.15-19
16ἀρνούμενοι γάρ σε εἰδέναι ἀσεβεῖς
ἐν ἰσχύι βραχίονός σου ἐμαστιγώθησαν,
ξένοις ὑετοῖς καὶ χαλάζαις καὶ ὄμβροις διωκόμενοι ἀπαραιτήτοις
καὶ πυρὶ καταναλισκόμενοι.
for the ungodly, refusing to know thee,
were scourged by the strength of thy arm,
pursued by unusual rains and hail and relentless storms,
and utterly consumed by fire.
 
17τὸ γὰρ παραδοξότατον, ἐν τῷ πάντα σβεννύντι ὕδατι
πλεῖον ἐνήργει τὸ πῦρ,
ὑπέρμαχος γὰρ ὁ κόσμος ἐστὶν δικαίων·
For - most incredible of all - in the water,
which quenches all things,
the fire had still greater effect,
for the universe defends the righteous.
 
18ποτὲ μὲν γὰρ ἡμεροῦτο φλόξ,
ἵνα μὴ καταφλέξῃ τὰ ἐπ' ἀσεβεῖς ἀπεσταλμένα ζῷα,
ἀλλ' αὐτοὶ βλέποντες εἰδῶσιν ὅτι θεοῦ κρίσει ἐλαύνονται·
At one time the flame was restrained,
so that it might not consume the creatures sent against the ungodly,
but that seeing this they might know that they were being pursued by the judgment of God;
 
19ποτὲ δὲ καὶ μεταξὺ ὕδατος ὑπὲρ τὴν πυρὸς δύναμιν φλέγει,
ἵνα ἀδίκου γῆς γενήματα διαφθείρῃ.
and at another time even in the midst of water it burned more intensely than fire,
to destroy the crops of the unrighteous land.
 
20ἀνθ' ὧν ἀγγέλων τροφὴν ἐψώμισας τὸν λαόν σου,
καὶ ἕτοιμον ἄρτον ἀπ' οὐρανοῦ παρέσχες αὐτοῖς ἀκοπιάτως,
πᾶσαν ἡδονὴν ἰσχύοντα καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν ἁρμόνιον γεῦσιν·
Instead of these things thou didst give thy people food of angels,
and without their toil thou didst supply them from heaven with bread ready to eat,
providing every pleasure and suited to every taste.
Manna. Wis.16.20-29
21ἡ μὲν γὰρ ὑπόστασίς σου τὴν σὴν πρὸς τέκνα ἐνεφάνιζεν γλυκύτητα,
τῇ δὲ τοῦ προσφερομένου ἐπιθυμίᾳ ὑπηρετῶν
πρὸς ὅ τις ἐβούλετο μετεκιρνᾶτο.
For thy sustenance manifested thy sweetness toward thy children;
and the bread, ministering to the desire of the one who took it,
was changed to suit every one's liking.
 
22χιὼν δὲ καὶ κρύσταλλος ὑπέμεινε πῦρ καὶ οὐκ ἐτήκετο,
ἵνα γνῶσιν ὅτι τοὺς τῶν ἐχθρῶν καρποὺς
κατέφθειρε πῦρ φλεγόμενον ἐν τῇ χαλάζῃ
καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὑετοῖς διαστράπτον·
Snow and ice withstood fire without melting,
so that they might know that the crops of their enemies were being destroyed by the fire that blazed in the hail and flashed in the showers of rain;
 
23τοῦτο πάλιν δ, ἵνα τραφῶσιν δίκαιοι,
καὶ τῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλέλησται δυνάμεως.
whereas the fire, in order that the righteous might be fed,
even forgot its native power.
 
24Ἡ γὰρ κτίσις σοὶ τῷ ποιήσαντι ὑπηρετοῦσα
ἐπιτείνεται εἰς κόλασιν κατὰ τῶν ἀδίκων
καὶ ἀνίεται εἰς εὐεργεσίαν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἐπὶ σοὶ πεποιθότων.
For creation, serving thee who hast made it,
exerts itself to punish the unrighteous,
and in kindness relaxes on behalf of those who trust in thee.
 
25διὰ τοῦτο καὶ τότε εἰς πάντα μεταλλευομένη
τῇ παντοτρόφῳ σου δωρεᾷ ὑπηρέτει,
πρὸς τὴν τῶν δεομένων θέλησιν,
Therefore at that time also, changed into all forms,
it served thy all-nourishing bounty,
according to the desire of those who had need,
 
26ἵνα μάθωσιν οἱ υἱοί σου, οὓς ἠγάπησας, Κύριε,
ὅτι οὐχ αἱ γενέσεις τῶν καρπῶν τρέφουσιν ἄνθρωπον,
ἀλλὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου τοὺς σοὶ πιστεύοντας διατηρεῖ.
so that thy sons, whom thou didst love, O Lord,
might learn that it is not the production of crops that feeds man,
but that thy word preserves those who trust in thee.
 
27τὸ γὰρ ὑπὸ πυρὸς μὴ φθειρόμενον
ἁπλῶς ὑπὸ βραχείας ἀκτῖνος ἡλίου θερμαινόμενον ἐτήκετο,
For what was not destroyed by fire was melted when simply warmed by a fleeting ray of the sun,
 
28ὅπως γνωστὸν ᾖ ὅτι δεῖ φθάνειν τὸν ἥλιον ἐπ' εὐχαριστίαν σου
καὶ πρὸς ἀνατολὴν φωτὸς ἐντυγχάνειν σοι·
to make it known that one must rise before the sun to give thee thanks,
and must pray to thee at the dawning of the light;
 
29ἀχαρίστου γὰρ ἐλπὶς ὡς χειμέριος πάχνη τακήσεται,
καὶ ῥυήσεται ὡς ὕδωρ ἄχρηστον.
for the hope of an ungrateful man will melt like wintry frost,
and flow away like waste water.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
