1Εὐόδωσεν τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ἐν χειρὶ προφήτου ἁγίου.
Wisdom prospered their works by the hand of a holy prophet.
Wisdom led the Israelites through the desert. Wis.11.1-5
2διώδευσαν ἔρημον ἀοίκητον,
καὶ ἐν ἀβάτοις ἔπηξαν σκηνάς·
They journeyed through an uninhabited wilderness,
and pitched their tents in untrodden places.
 
3ἀντέστησαν πολεμίοις καὶ ἐχθροὺς ἠμύναντο.
They withstood their enemies and fought off their foes.
 
4ἐδίψησαν καὶ ἐπεκαλέσαντό σε,
καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτοῖς ἐκ πέτρας ἀκροτόμου ὕδωρ,
καὶ ἴαμα δίψης ἐκ λίθου σκληροῦ.
When they thirsted they called upon thee,
and water was given them out of flinty rock,
and slaking of thirst from hard stone.
 
5δι' ὧν γὰρ ἐκολάσθησαν οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν,
For through the very things by which their enemies were punished,
they themselves received benefit in their need.
 
5aδιὰ τούτων αὐτοὶ ἀποροῦντες εὐεργετήθησαν.
 
6ἀντὶ μὲν πηγῆς ἀενάου ποταμοῦ
αἵματι λυθρώδει ταραχθέντος
Instead of the fountain of an ever-flowing river,
stirred up and defiled with blood
Punishment of the Egyptians. Wis.11.6-20
7εἰς ἔλεγχον νηπιοκτόνου διατάγματος,
ἔδωκας αὐτοῖς δαψιλὲς ὕδωρ ἀνελπίστως
in rebuke for the decree to slay the infants,
thou gavest them abundant water unexpectedly,
 
8δείξας διὰ τοῦ τότε δίψους πῶς τοὺς ὑπεναντίους ἐκόλασας.
showing by their thirst at that time how thou didst punish their enemies.
 
9ὅτε γὰρ ἐπειράσθησαν, καίπερ ἐν ἐλέει παιδευόμενοι, ἔγνωσαν πῶς μετ' ὀργῆς κρινόμενοι ἀσεβεῖς ἐβασανίζοντο·
For when they were tried,
though they were weing disciplined in mercy,
they learned how the ungodly were tormented when judged in wrath.
 
10τούτους μὲν γὰρ ὡς πατὴρ νουθετῶν ἐδοκίμασας,
ἐκείνους δὲ ὡς ἀπότομος βασιλεὺς καταδικάζων ἐξήτασας.
For thou didst test them as a father does in warning,
but thou didst examine the ungodly as a stern king does in condemnation.
 
11καὶ ἀπόντες δὲ καὶ παρόντες ὁμοίως ἐτρύχοντο·
Whether absent or present, they were equally distressed,
 
12διπλῆ γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἔλαβεν λύπη
καὶ στεναγμὸς μνημῶν τῶν παρελθόντων·
for a twofold grief possessed them,
and a groaning at the memory of what had occurred.
 
13ὅτε γὰρ ἤκουσαν διὰ τῶν ἰδίων κολάσεων
εὐεργετημένους αὐτούς, ᾔσθοντο τοῦ κυρίου.
For when they heard that through their own punishments
the righteous had received benefit, they perceived it was the Lord's doing.
 
14ὃν γὰρ ἐν ἐκθέσει πάλαι ῥιφέντα ἀπεῖπον χλευάζοντες·
ἐπὶ τέλει τῶν ἐκβάσεων ἐθαύμασαν,
οὐχ ὅμοια δικαίοις διψήσαντες.
For though they had mockingly rejected him who long before had been cast out and exposed,
at the end of the events they marveled at him,
for their thirst was not like that of the righteous.
 
15ἀντὶ δὲ λογισμῶν ἀσυνέτων ἀδικίας αὐτῶν,
ἐν οἷς πλανηθέντες ἐθρήσκευον ἄλογα ἑρπετὰ καὶ κνώδαλα εὐτελῆ,
ἐπαπέστειλας αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἀλόγων ζῴων εἰς ἐκδίκησιν,
In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts,
which led them astray to worship irrational serpents and worthless animals,
thou didst send upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them,
 
16ἵνα γνῶσιν ὅτι, δι' ὧν τις ἁμαρτάνει, διὰ τούτων κολάζεται.
that they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which he sins.
 
17οὐ γὰρ ἠπόρει ἡ παντοδύναμός σου χεὶρ
καὶ κτίσασα τὸν κόσμον ἐξ ἀμόρφου ὕλης
ἐπιπέμψαι αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἄρκων ἢ θρασεῖς λέοντας
For thy all-powerful hand,
which created the world out of formless matter,
did not lack the means to send upon them a multitude of bears, or bold lions,
 
18ἢ νεοκτίστους θυμοῦ πλήρεις θῆρας ἀγνώστους,
ἤτοι πυρπνόον φυσῶντας ἄσθμα,
ἢ βρόμον λικμωμένους καπνοῦ,
ἢ δεινοὺς ἀπ' ὀμμάτων σπινθῆρας ἀστράπτοντας,
or newly created unknown beasts full of rage,
or such as breathe out fiery breath,
or belch forth a thick pall of smoke,
or flash terrible sparks from their eyes;
 
19ὧν οὐ μόνον ἡ βλάβη ἠδύνατο συνεκτρῖψαι αὐτούς,
ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ ὄψις ἐκφοβήσασα διολέσαι.
not only could their damage exterminate men,
but the mere sight of them could kill by fright.
 
20καὶ χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἑνὶ πνεύματι πεσεῖν ἐδύναντο ὑπὸ τῆς δίκης διωχθέντες,
καὶ λικμηθέντες ὑπὸ πνεύματος δυνάμεώς σου·
ἀλλὰ πάντα μέτρῳ καὶ ἀριθμῷ καὶ σταθμῷ διέταξας.
Even apart from these, men could fall at a single breath when pursued by justice
and scattered by the breath of thy power.
But thou hast arranged all things by measure and number and weight.
 
21τὸ γὰρ μεγάλως ἰσχύειν σοι πάρεστιν πάντοτε,
καὶ κράτει βραχίονός σου τίς ἀντιστήσεται;
For it is always in thy power to show great strength,
and who can withstand the might of thy arm?
God is powerful & merciful. Wis.11.21-12.2
22ὅτι ὡς ῥοπὴ ἐκ πλαστίγγων ὅλος ὁ κόσμος ἐναντίον σου,
καὶ ὡς ῥανὶς δρόσου ὀρθρινὴ κατελθοῦσα ἐπὶ γῆν.
Because the whole world before thee is like a speck that tips the scales,
and like a drop of morning dew that falls upon the ground.
 
23ἐλεεῖς δὲ πάντας, ὅτι πάντα δύνασαι,
καὶ παρορᾷς ἁμαρτήματα ἀνθρώπων εἰς μετάνοιαν.
But thou art merciful to all, for thou canst do all things,
and thou dost overlook men's sins, that they may repent.
 
24ἀγαπᾷς γὰρ τὰ ὄντα πάντα καὶ οὐδὲν βδελύσσῃ ὧν ἐποίησας,
οὐδὲ γὰρ ἂν μισῶν τι κατεσκεύασας.
For thou lovest all things that exist,
and hast loathing for none of the things which thou hast made,
for thou wouldst not have made anything if thou hadst hated it.
 
25πῶς δὲ διέμεινεν ἄν τι, εἰ μὴ σὺ ἠθέλησας,
ἢ τὸ μὴ κληθὲν ὑπὸ σοῦ διετηρήθη;
How would anything have endured if thou hadst not willed it?
Or how would anything not called forth by thee have been preserved?
 
26φείδῃ δὲ πάντων, ὅτι σά ἐστιν, Δέσποτα φιλόψυχε·
Thou sparest all things, for they are thine, O Lord who lovest the living.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT so I have included the RSV Aprocrypha for the Greek books not covered by Brenton.
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
