1 vae tibi, Babylon et Asia, vae tibi, Aegypte et Syria. Woe to you, Babylon and Asia! Woe to you, Egypt and Syria!           
2 praecingite vos saccos, plangite filios vestros et dolete de his, quia adpropinquavit contritio vestra.
16:3 inmissus est gladius vobis, et quis est qui avertat eum.
Gird yourselves with sackcloth and haircloth, and wail for your children, and lament for them; for your destruction is at hand.           
4 inmissus est vobis ignis, et quis est qui extinguat eum. A fire has been sent upon you, and who is there to quench it?           
5 inmissa sunt vobis mala, et quis est qui recutiet ea? Calamities have been sent upon you, and who is there to drive them away?           
6 numquid recutiet aliquis leonem esurientem in silva aut numquid extinguet ignem, cum stramen incensum fuerit? Can one drive off a hungry lion in the forest, or quench a fire in the stubble, when once it has begun to burn?           
7 aut numquid recutiet sagittam inmissam a sagittario forte? Can one turn back an arrow shot by a strong archer?           
8 Dominus Deus mittit mala, et quis recutiet ea? The Lord God sends calamities, and who will drive them away?           
9 et exiet ignis ex iracundia eius, et quis est qui extinguat eum? Fire will go forth from his wrath, and who is there to quench it?           
10 coruscabit, et quis non timebit? tonabit, et quis non horrebit? He will flash lightning, and who will not be afraid? He will thunder, and who will not be terrified?           
11 Dominus comminatur, quis non conterretur a facie eius? The Lord will threaten, and who will not be utterly shattered at his presence?           
12 tremet terra a fundamento eius, mare fluctuatur de profundo, et fluctus eius turbabuntur et pisces eius a facie Domini et a gloria virtutis eius, The earth and its foundations quake, the sea is churned up from the depths, and its waves and the fish also shall be troubled at the presence of the Lord and before the glory of his power.           
13 quoniam fortis gloriae qui tendit sagittam, et acumen eius acutum, quae dimissa est ab eo, non deficiet missa super fines terrae. For his right hand that bends the bow is strong, and his arrows that he shoots are sharp and will not miss when they begin to be shot to the ends of the world.           
14 ecce mittuntur mala et non revertentur, donec venient super terram. Behold, calamities are sent forth and shall not return until they come over the earth.           
15 et ignis incendetur et non extinguetur, donec excomedat frumenta terrae. The fire is kindled, and shall not be put out until it consumes the foundations of the earth.           
16 quomodo non revertitur sagitta missa a sagittario valido, sic non revertentur mala quae fuerint emissa in terram. Just as an arrow shot by a mighty archer does not return, so the calamities that are sent upon the earth shall not return.           
17 vae mihi, vae mihi, quis me liberabit in diebus illis? Alas for me! Alas for me! Who will deliver me in those days?           
18 initium gemitus et copiosi suspirantium, initium famis et multi disperient, initium belli et timebunt potestates, initium malor The beginning of sorrows, when there shall be much lamentation; the beginning of famine, when many shall perish; the beginning of wars, when the powers shall be terrified; the beginning of calamities, when all shall tremble. What shall they do in these circumstances, when the calamities come?           
19 ab eis; quid facient, cum venerint mala? Behold, famine and plague, tribulation and anguish are sent as scourges for the correction of men.           
20 ecce famis plaga dimissa est, et tribulatio eius tamquam mastix, castigatio in disciplina. Yet for all this they will not turn from their iniquities, nor be always mindful of the scourges.           
21 et super his omnibus non se avertent ab iniquitatibus suis nec super has plagas memorantur sempiterna. Behold, provision will be so cheap upon earth that men will imagine that peace is assured for them, and then the calamities shall spring up on the earth - the sword, famine, and great confusion.           
22 ecce erit annonae vilitas in brevi super terram, ut putent sibi esse directam pacem. tunc superflorescent mala super terram, gladius et famis. For many of those who live on the earth shall perish by famine; and those who survive the famine shall die by the sword.           
23 et aporiant vitam super terram, et gladius dispersit quae superaverint a fame. And the dead shall be cast out like dung, and there shall be no one to console them; for the earth shall be left desolate, and its cities shall be demolished.           
24 et mortui quasi stercora proicientur, et non habent qui consolentur eos. et derelinquetur deserta terra, et civitates eius demolientur. No one shall be left to cultivate the earth or to sow it.           
25 non derelinquetur agricola, qui colit terram et qui seminat eam. The trees shall bear fruit, and who will gather it?           
26 ligna fructiferabunt, et quis vindemiet illa? The grapes shall ripen, and who will tread them? For in all places there shall be great solitude;           
27 et uva tradet se ad vindemiam, et quis adligabit eam? erit enim et locis desertio multa. one man will long to see another, or even to hear his voice.           
28 concupiscet enim homo hominem videre vel certe vocem eius audire. For out of a city, ten shall be left; and out of the field, two who have hidden themselves in thick groves and clefts in the rocks.           
29 relinquentur enim decem de civitate et duo ex agro, qui absconderint se in silva et in fissuras petrarum. As in an olive orchard three or four olives may be left on every tree,           
30 quemadmodum relinquentur in oliveto tres vel quattuor olivae, or as when a vineyard is gathered some clusters may be left by those who search carefully through the vineyard,           
31 aut sicut in vinea vindemiata et subremanet racemus patens ab scrutantibus vindemiam diligenter, so in those days three or four shall be left by those who search their houses with the sword.           
32 sic remanebunt in diebus illis tres vel quattuor ab scrutantibus domos eorum in romphea. And the earth shall be left desolate, and its fields shall be for briers, and its roads and all its paths shall bring forth thorns, because no sheep will go along them.           
33 et relinquetur deserta terra, et agri eius inveteraverunt, et viae eius et omnes semitae germinabunt spinas, eo quod non transient oves per eam. Virgins shall mourn because they have no bridegrooms; women shall mourn because they have no husbands; their daughters shall mourn, because they have no helpers.           
34 lugebunt virgines non habentes sponsos, lugebunt mulieres non habentes viros, lugebunt filiae earum non habentes adiutorium. Their bridegrooms shall be killed in war, and their husbands shall perish of famine.           
35 sponsi earum in bello consumentur, et viri earum in fame exterentur. Listen now to these things, and understand them, O servants of the Lord. Prepare for the end! 2(4)Ezr.16.35-78         
36 audite vero ista et cognoscite, ea servi Domini. Behold the word of the Lord, receive it; do not disbelieve what the Lord says.           
37 ecce verbum Domini, excipite eum, ne discredatis de quibus dicit Dominus: Behold, the calamities draw near, and are not delayed.           
38 ecce adpropinquant mala et non tardantur. Just as a woman with child, in the ninth month, when the time of her delivery draws near, has great pains about her womb for two or three hours beforehand, and when the child comes forth from the womb, there will not be a moment's delay,           
39 quemadmodum praegnans in nono mense filium suum in adpropinquante hora partus eius, ante horas duas vel tres gementes dolores circum ventrem eius, et prodiente infan so the calamities will not delay in coming forth upon the earth, and the world will groan, and pains will seize it on every side.           
40 sic non morabuntur mala ad prodiendum super terram, et saeculum gemet et dolores circumtenent illum. "Hear my words, O my people; prepare for battle, and in the midst of the calamities be like strangers on the earth.           
41 audite verbum, plebs mea, parate vos ad pugnam in malis. sic estote quasi advenae terrae: Let him that sells be like one who will flee; let him that buys be like one who will lose;           
42 qui vendit, quasi qui fugiet; et qui emit, quasi qui perditurus; let him that does business be like one who will not make a profit; and let him that builds a house be like one who will not live in it;           
43 qui mercatur, quasi qui fructum non capiat; et qui aedificat, quasi non habitaturus; let him that sows be like one who will not reap; so also him that prunes the vines, like one who will not gather the grapes;           
44 qui seminat, quasi non messem facturus; et qui putat, quasi non vindemiaturus; them that marry, like those who will have no children; and them that do not marry, like those who are widowed.           
45 qui nubunt, sic quasi filios non facturi; et qui non nubunt, sic quasi vidui. Because those who labour, labour in vain;           
46 propter quod qui laborant sine causa laborant, for strangers shall gather their fruits, and plunder their goods, and overthrow their houses, and take their children captive; for in captivity and famine they will beget their children.           
47 fructus enim illorum alienigenae metent et substantiam illorum rapient et domos evertent et filios eorum captivabunt, quia in captivitate et fame generant natos suos Those who conduct business, do it only to be plundered; the more they adorn their cities, their houses and possessions, and their persons,           
48 et qui negotiantur negotiantur in rapina. quamdiu exornant civitates et domos suas et possessiones et personas suas, the more angry I will be with them for their sins," says the Lord.           
49 tanto magis adzelabor eos super peccata dicit Dominus. Just as a respectable and virtuous woman abhors a harlot,           
50 quomodo zelatur fornicaria mulierem idoneam et bonam valde, so righteousness shall abhor iniquity, when she decks herself out, and shall accuse her to her face, when he comes who will defend him who searches out every sin on earth.           
51 sic zelabitur iustitia iniquitatem cum exornat se, et accusat eam in faciem, cum venerit qui defendat exquirentem omnem peccatum super terram. Therefore do not be like her or her works.           
52 propterea nolite similari eam nec operibus eius, For behold, just a little while, and iniquity will be removed from the earth, and righteousness will reign over us.           
53 quoniam ecce adhuc pusillum, et tolletur iniquitas a terra et iustitia regnabit in nos. Let no sinner say that he has not sinned; for God will burn coals of fire on the head of him who says, "I have not sinned before God and his glory."           
54 non dicat peccator non se peccasse quoniam carbones ignis conburet super caput eius qui dicit: non peccavi coram Deo et gloria ipsius. Behold, the Lord knows all the works of men, their imaginations and their thoughts and their hearts.           
55 ecce Dominus cognoscit omnia opera hominis et adinventiones illorum et cogitatum illorum et corda illorum. He said, "Let the earth be made," and it was made; "Let the heaven be made," and it was made.           
56 qui dixit: fiat terra, et facta est, fiat caelum, et factum est, At his word the stars were fixed, and he knows the number of the stars.           
57 et in verbo illius stellae fundatae sunt, et novit numerum stellarum, It is he who searches the deep and its treasures, who has measured the sea and its contents;           
58 qui scrutat abyssum et thesauros illorum, qui metitus est mare et conceptum eius, who has enclosed the sea in the midst of the waters, and by his word has suspended the earth over the water;           
59 qui conclusit mare in medio aquarum et suspendit terram super aquam verbo suo, who has spread out the heaven like an arch, and founded it upon the waters;           
60 qui extendit caelum quasi cameram et super aquas fundavit eum, who has put springs of water in the desert, and pools on the tops of the mountains, to send rivers from the heights to water the earth;           
61 qui posuit in deserto fontes aquarum et super vertices montium lacus ad emittendum flumina ab eminenti ut potaret terra, who formed man, and put a heart in the midst of his body, and gave him breath and life and understanding           
62 qui finxit hominem et posuit cor in medio corporis et misit ei spiritum et vitam et intellectum and the spirit of Almighty God; who made all things and searches out hidden things in hidden places.           
63 et spiramentum Dei omnipotentis, qui fecit omnia et scrutinat absconsa in absconsis; certe Surely he knows your imaginations and what you think in your hearts! Woe to those who sin and want to hide their sins!           
64 hic novit adinventionem vestram et quae cogitatis in cordibus vestris. vae peccantibus et volentibus occultare peccata sua. Because the Lord will strictly examine all their works, and will make a public spectacle of all of you.           
65 propter quod Dominus scrutinando scrutinabit omnia opera eorum et traducet vos omnes. And when your sins come out before men, you shall be put to shame; and your own iniquities shall stand as your accusers in that day.           
66 et vos confusi eritis, cum processerint peccata vestra coram hominibus, et iniquitates erint quae accusatores stabunt in die illo. What will you do? Or how will you hide your sins before God and his angels?           
67 quid facietis aut quomodo abscondetis peccata vestra coram Domino et gloria eius? Behold, God is the judge, fear him! Cease from your sins, and forget your iniquities, never to commit them again; so God will lead you forth and deliver you from all tribulation.           
68 ecce iudex Deus, timete eum, et desinite a peccatis vestris et obliviscimini iniquitates vestras iam agere eas sempiterno, et Deus educabit vos et liberabit de omni For behold, the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you, and they shall carry off some of you and shall feed you what was sacrificed to idols.           
69 ecce enim incenditur ardor super vos turbae copiosae, et rapient quosdam ex vobis et cibabunt idolis occisam. And those who consent to eat shall be held in derision and contempt, and be trodden under foot.           
70 et qui consenserint eis, erunt illis in derisum et in inproperium et in conculcationem. For in many places and in neighbouring cities there shall be a great insurrection against those who fear the Lord.           
71 erit enim Lociis et in vicinas civitates exsurrectio multa super timentes Dominum. They shall be like mad men, sparing no one, but plundering and destroying those who continue to fear the Lord.           
72 erunt quasi insani neminem parcentes ad diripiendum et devastandum adhuc timentes Dominum, For they shall destroy and plunder their goods, and drive them out of their houses.           
73 quia devastabunt et diripient substantias eorum et de domo sua eos eicient, Then the tested quality of my elect shall be manifest, as gold that is tested by fire.           
74 tunc parebit probatio electorum meorum, ut aurum quod probatur ab igne. "Hear, my elect," says the Lord. "Behold, the days of tribulation are at hand, and I will deliver you from them.           
75 audite, electi mei, dicit Dominus, ecce adsunt dies tribulationis, et de his liberabo vos. Do not fear or doubt, for God is your guide.           
76 ne timeatis nec haesitemini, quoniam Deus dux vester est. You who keep my commandments and precepts," says the Lord God, "do not let your sins pull you down, or your iniquities prevail over you."           
77 et qui servatis mandata et praecepta mea, dicit Dominus Deus, ne praeponderent vos peccata vestra nec superelevent se iniquitates vestrae. Woe to those who are choked by their sins and overwhelmed by their iniquities, as a field is choked with underbrush and its path overwhelmed with thorns, so that no one can pass through!           
78 vae qui constringuntur a peccatis suis et obteguntur ab iniquitatibus suis, quemadmodum ager constringitur a silva et spinis tegitur semita eius, per quam non transi It is shut off and given up to be consumed by fire.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)

The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT,
but use this as the English Text for the remainder of the LXX (Apocrypha - Deuterocanonical books).
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
