3 filii Aaron ex tribu Levi, qui fuit captivus in regione Medorum, in regno Artaxersis regis Persarum. son of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi, who was a captive in the country of the Medes in the reign of Artaxerxes, king of the Persians.
4 et factum est verbum Domini ad me dicens: The word of the Lord came to me, saying, Rejection of Israel. 2(4)Ezr.1.4-27
5 vade adnuntia populo meo facinora ipsorum et filiis eorum iniquitates quas in me admiserunt, ut nuntient filiis filiorum suorum, "Go and declare to my people their evil deeds, and to their children the iniquities which they have committed against me, so that they may tell their children's children
6 quia peccata parentum illorum in illis creverunt; obliti enim me sacrificaverunt diis alienis. that the sins of their parents have increased in them, for they have forgotten me and have offered sacrifices to strange gods.
Was it not I who brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage? But they have angered me and despised my counsels.
Pull out the hair of your head and hurl all evils upon them, for they have not obeyed my law - they are a rebellious people.
9 usquequo eos sustinebo, quibus tanta beneficia contuli? How long shall I endure them, on whom I have bestowed such great benefits?
For their sake I have overthrown many kings: I struck down Pharaoh with his servants, and all his army.
11 omnes gentes a facie eorum perdidi et in oriente provinciarum duarum populos Tyri et Sidonis dissipavi et omnes adversarios eorum interfeci. I have destroyed all nations before them, and scattered in the east the people of two provinces, Tyre and Sidon; I have slain all their enemies.
12 tu vero loquere ad eos dicens: haec dicit Dominus: "But speak to them and say,

Thus says the Lord:

13 nempe ego vos mare traieci et plateas vobis in invio munitas exhibui; ducem vobis dedi Moysen et Aaron sacerdotem. Surely it was I who brought you through the sea, and made safe highways for you where there was no road; I gave you Moses as leader and Aaron as priest;
I provided light for you from a pillar of fire, and did great wonders among you. Yet you have forgotten me, says the Lord.
15 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: coturnix vobis in signo fuit, castra vobis ad tutelam dedi, et illic murmurastis. "Thus says the Lord Almighty: The quails were a sign to you; I gave you camps for your protection, and in them you complained.
You have not exulted in my name at the destruction of your enemies, but to this day you still complain.
Where are the benefits which I bestowed on you? When you were hungry and thirsty in the wilderness, did you not cry out to me,
18 dicentes: ut quid nos in desertum istud adduxisti interficere nos? melius nobis fuerat servire Agyptiis quam mori in deserto hoc. saying, `Why hast thou led us into this wilderness to kill us? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this wilderness.'
19 ego dolui gemitos vestros et dedi mannam vobis in escam, panem angelorum manducastis. I pitied your groanings and gave you manna for food; you ate the bread of angels.
20 nonne cum sitiretis petram excidi, et fluxerunt aquae in satietatem? propter aestus folia arborum vos texi. When you were thirsty, did I not cleave the rock so that waters flowed in abundance? Because of the heat I covered you with the leaves of trees.
21 divisi vobis terras pingues, Chananeos et Ferezeos et Philistheos a facie vestra proieci. quid faciam vobis adhuc? dicit Dominus. I divided fertile lands among you; I drove out the Canaanites, the Perizzites, and the Philistines before you. What more can I do for you? says the Lord.
22 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: in deserto cum essetis in flumine amaro sitientes et blasphemantes nomen meum, Thus says the Lord Almighty: When you were in the wilderness, at the bitter stream, thirsty and blaspheming my name,
I did not send fire upon you for your blasphemies, but threw a tree into the water and made the stream sweet.
24 quid tibi faciam, Iacob? noluisti me obaudire, Iuda. transferam me ad alias gentes et dabo eis nomen meum, ut custodiant legitima mea. "What shall I do to you, O Jacob? You would not obey me, O Judah. I will turn to other nations and will give them my name, that they may keep my statutes.
25 quoniam me dereliquistis, et ego vos derelinquam; petentibus vobis a me misericordiam, non miserebor vestri. Because you have forsaken me, I also will forsake you. When you beg mercy of me, I will show you no mercy.
When you call upon me, I will not listen to you; for you have defiled your hands with blood, and your feet are swift to commit murder.
27 non quasi me dereliquistis, sed vos ipsos, dicit Dominus. It is not as though you had forsaken me; you have forsaken yourselves, says the Lord.
"Thus says the Lord Almighty: Have I not entreated you as a father entreats his sons or a mother her daughters or a nurse her children, Israel to be replaced. 2(4)Ezr.1.28-2.32
29 ut essetis mihi in populo et ego vobis in Deum, et vos mihi in filios et ego vobis in patrem? that you should be my people and I should be your God, and that you should be my sons and I should be your father?
I gathered you as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. But now, what shall I do to you? I will cast you out from my presence.
When you offer oblations to me, I will turn my face from you; for I have rejected your feast days, and new moons, and circumcisions of the flesh.
32 ego misi pueros meos prophetas ad vos, quos acceptos interfecistis et laniastis corpora illorum, quorum sanguinem exquiram, dicit Dominus. I sent to you my servants the prophets, but you have taken and slain them and torn their bodies in pieces; their blood I will require of you, says the Lord.
33 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: domus vestra deserta est, proiciam vos sicut ventus stipulam. "Thus says the Lord Almighty: Your house is desolate; I will drive you out as the wind drives straw;
34 et filii procreationem non facient, quoniam mandatum meum vobiscum neglexerunt et quod malum est coram me fecerunt. and your sons will have no children, because with you they have neglected my commandment and have done what is evil in my sight.
I will give your houses to a people that will come, who without having heard me will believe. Those to whom I have shown no signs will do what I have commanded.
36 prophetas non viderunt et memorabuntur antiquitatum eorum. They have seen no prophets, yet will recall their former state.
I call to witness the gratitude of the people that is to come, whose children rejoice with gladness; though they do not see me with bodily eyes, yet with the spirit they will believe the things I have said.
38 et nunc, pater, aspice cum gloria et vide populum venientem ab oriente. "And now, father, look with pride and see the people coming from the east;
39 quibus dabo ducatum Abraham, Isaac et Iacob et Osee et Amos et Michae et Iohelis et Abdiae et Ionae to them I will give as leaders Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and Hosea and Amos and Micah and Joel and Obadiah and Jonah
40 et Naum et Abacuc, Sofoniae. Aggei, Zacchariae et Malachiae, qui et angelus Domini vocatus est. and Nahum and Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, who is also called the messenger of the Lord.

Notes:

The Old Testament in Greek is Rahlf's LXX available in Word format at the Tyndale website, adapted to database format.
The alternative readings of the LXX - Judges (Alexandrinus), Daniel, Susanna & Bel (LXX received text), and Tobit (Sinaiticus [not printed in Swete]) as separate book references so that they can be viewed as an alternative text in parallel with the primary text.
(I have reversed the Swete presentation for Daniel, Susanna, Bel by listing in the later Theodotion LXX text as the main text. )
The LXX cross references to the Hebrew Bible have been extensively revised using those set out in Swete's 'Old Testament in Greek' publications between 1894 and 1909, amended in part to agree with verses as printed in the Biblia Hebraica (1937 publication).
Some verse cross references in Swete's had to be amended to agree with the BHS verse numbering, and there may well be some mismatches that I haven't yet picked up on. (If you find any errors please e-mail me.)
Hebrew Bible has been adapted from the BHS in Word format at Tyndale.
The Septuagint in English ( translated by Sir Lancelot CL Brenton) - is used here only for the books of the Hebrew Bible.
The Revised Standard Version: This generally follows the Hebrew Bible for the canonical OT,
but use this as the English Text for the remainder of the LXX (Apocrypha - Deuterocanonical books).
Ecclesiasticus - Sirach Chs.30-36: The text of these chapters from 30.24 to 36.16, is disordered.
I have followed Swete's verse numbering for the greek text.
Also, the RSV verse numbering differs from the NRSV.
The NRSV appears to have followed Swete's numbering here, so I have re-ordered the RSV to agree with both the NRSV & Swete for these chapters.
