Tanis

Raamses, Rameses. (See also wiki article Pi-Ramesses.)

RAAMSES, RAMESES - One of the store-cities built by the Israelites in Egypt, and the starting-point of the Exodus (Ex.1.11, 12.37, Nu.33.3, 5). The site is not quite certain, but it was probably the city called in Egyptian, Pi-Ra'messe, 'House of Ramesses,' the Delta capital of Ramesses II. and his successors. In Gn.47.11 Joseph, by Pharaoh's command, gives to Jacob's family 'a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses.' It thus lay in the Land of Goshen (q.v.), and is probably to be identified either with Qantir, or more probably Tanis. See Sir A. H. Gardiner, Ancient Egyptian Onomastica (1947), II. 171*-175*, 278*-279*. [Article: Dictionary of the Bible, J.Hastings, 2nd Ed., T&T.Clark, 1963 - F.LI.G. - R.J.W.]
