LIBYA

LIBYA, LIBYANS - The name of a people mentioned in Nah.3.9, 2 Ch.12.3, 16.8 (in all of which AV, RV have Lubim), Dn.11.43. The place, Libya, is mentioned in RSV in Ezk.30.5 (following LXX, where RV, following MT, has Cub [AV Chub]), Ac.2.10. AV 'Libya' in Ezk.30.5 is an error for Put (RV, RSV). The Libyans were a very ancient people living W. of Egypt, who were subdued by the Egyptians at an early date and long furnished mercenary soldiers to their armies. At length they invaded Egypt, subdued it in the 10th cent. BC, and established a powerful dynasty, of which the Biblical Shishak was the founder. Perhaps Lubim should be read for Ludim (q.v.) in certain passages. Cf LEHABIM. [Article: Dictionary of the Bible, J.Hastings, 2nd Ed., T&T.Clark, 1963 - J.F.McC. - H.H.R.]
