Dor

DOR - One of the cities which joined Jabin against Joshua, and whose king was killed, Jos.11:2, 12:23 (RSV Naphoth-dor and Naphath-dor). It lay apparently on or near the border between Manasseh and Asher, so that its possession was ambiguous, 17:11. The aborigines were not driven out, Jdg.1:27. It was administered by Ben-abinadab for Solomon, 1 Kg.4:11 (RSV Naphath-dor). It is mentioned in 1 Mac.15:11,13,25 (RV, RSV; AV Dora). Though Josephus refers to it as on the sea-coast, and it is generally identified with el-Burj, N of et-Tanturah, N of Caesarea, the reference to the 'heights of Dor' (i.e.naphoth dor) rather suggests that it was in some hilly district such as the slope of the range of Carmel.
