Antipatris

Antipatris - Roman road

ANTIPATRIS - The place to which St. Paul was conducted in the night and from which he then was escorted to Caesarea (Ac.23.31). The town was founded by Herod the Great and named in honour of his father, Antipater. Josephus speaks of it as on the road from Lydda to Caesarea. It thus was at an important road intersection. It is held to be identical with Ras el-'Ain at the head of the stream called el-'Aujeh. [Article: Dictionary of the Bible, J.Hastings, 2nd Ed., T&T.Clark, 1963. - E.G.K.]
