St Albans Cathedral. Norman columns. Transept: Ceiling beneath the tower. The Apse.

Cathedral Church of the St Alban, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. Diocese of St Albans.
A Benedictine monastery was founded here in 793 by King Offa of Mercia.
In 1077 Lanfranc sent the monk Paul from Caen to the monastery at St Albans.
Using bricks from the Roman ruins of Verulamium, gathered by his predecessors, Paul built the stongest Anglo-Norman building still extant, over 125 metres long.
The Abbey Church was consecrated in 1115, dedicated to St Alban, the first British Martyr who was beheaded in 304.
This view faces east down the nave.
