Golden chalice with filigree, and paten inlaid with red
glass.
6th century, found at Gourdon (Cote d'Or). Paris, Cabinet des
medailles.
The models & technique are still those of the late
Roman craftsmanship,
but the ornamentation, proportions, & execution
are typically Merovingian.
The church in which these sacred vessels
were used belonged to the young Burgundian kingdom.
